Rumsfeld said: ``People need to trust each other and their government. The idea that people in government are lying is fundamentally destructive of that trust.''

The act of the government lying is destructive of that trust.

When a dog pisses on a hydrant, it is not committing an act of vandalism. It is simply being a dog.

And if the fire hydrant has any sense it will trust the dog to do so.

And take evasive action.

To paraphrase an old joke:

Q: How do you tell if someone in the government is lying?

A: His lips are moving.

Once upon a time, we did trust our government. Then came Vietnam and Watergate, and Kenneth Starr. It has been suggested that the powers that be prefer to be mistrusted, in that it discourages us from participating in the democratic process, and lowers our expectations of government.

But I kinda like the "la-la-la-la-la's" and the high falsetto just before the SPLUTCH!! Get a load of the Martin he's playing:   six tuning pegs but only three strings. Maybe that's all he can handle. . . .
