BS: Pat Robertson- Apoplectic Voice of God

Subject: BS: Pat Robertson- Apoplectic Voice of God
From: Ebbie

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, "The 700 Club."

"And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there," he said.

"The 700 Club claims a daily audience of around one million. It is also broadcast around the world translated into more than 70 languages."

Huh?

Don, if you knew how many times I have looked at your artwork you'd know the esteem I hold for you. I don't know how to say in words what your art does--I just know it does. I am so taken by the art in "Cliff Diving" and the poem that goes with it that it has inspired a piece of writing (with music) from me. It's a song. I carry that picture in my head, as I do so much of your work. There are very few people on Earth I want to meet, but you are on the short list of four or five.

Cliff Diving by Don Hakman.

I think maybe you don't know just how brilliant you are. But, by God, I do. I could go on here with many pieces you've done, lauding so, so many of them. Tell you how much they have meant to my view of life and whatever I can figure out of this universe. History has given the world some folks who actually change the way reality seems. I think you are one of those people. I know it's unlikely we will ever meet, but maybe that isn't even necessary. What you put in visionable work is what someday I hope to capture with words.

And, how can we get Don's work a wider audience?

People will believe in just about anything and many are more than willing to try and get you to believe in their way. Some do it for money while others hold a firm belief. When I married my Protesant wife I was bound for hell. And others said it wouldn't last. That was 34 years ago.
But the point I want to make is this. A thread ( Catholic Bishop and Priest Scandal)in April of 2002 had a reply by a mudcatter by the name of Rick M. In his response he stated the following. " Don't Give Any Other Human The Right to Dictate Your Spirit Path". I'm sure Rick M if you read this you won't mind me quoting you. In all my years of confusion, RickM made it so clear to me.

'sanctimonious' doesn't even quite describe it. I think the man has a serious case of grandiosity. I think he is deluded. I think he is meanspirited and vengeful. I think he is dishonest and consiously, deliberately deceptive. My guess is that at night he sleeps with the light on.

I will never forget what I saw on the '700 Club' one day. I was taking care of an elderly woman and she had the television on.

On it Robertson had a guest who was making the preposterous claim that the color pink is deleterious and disabling to men. He demonstrated the fact to Robertson.

First he had PR show that he could easily hold his arm rigid when the guest tugged on it. Then Guest laid a pink cloth on PR's arm and said, OK now don't let me bend it.

Pat Robertson strained mightily and guess what- he couldn't.

The next time I saw my very conservative, faith-filled, Pat Robertson-following Christian brother in law, I asked him to hold his arm rigid and demonstrate that I couldn't bend it. Then I laid a pink pillowcase on his arm and said, OK NOW bend it, and I held on.

He looked at me quizzically but he bent it. No problem.

These t.v. evangelists have been around since the inception of t.v. Trouble is, the population has increased and so has the audience. These people pray, alright. They prey upon shut ins, invalids and couch potatoes. I actually think they should be outlawed but they realized a long time ago that you could get away with anything as long as you cloaked it in religion.

What irks me is the tv stations which carry his show accept it for pay, i.e. it is essentially a paid commercial announcement. It'd be better if it was kept to the religious channels, but then anyone without cable wouldn't be able to get it. I hate that it is shown every day on the station for which my husband works; it's a corporate decision to accept the money and run it. In this conservative, church-ridden area it gets big ratings.

He is also the same self-righteous-direct-pipeline-to-God-his-Goon who called for the assasination of Chavez of VZ, and blamed a hurricane in FL on the "godlessness" of the people. I think I remember him blaming 9-11 on that, too, making it partially the sinful city of New York's fault, too.

The best thing I can get out of this is karmic payback is going to be a real bitch for him and it couldn't come a moment too soon, imo.

I'm all for the idea of "intelligent design", since I think that everything that comes into being does so through intelligence. I think atomic structures are intelligent. I think energy is intelligent. I think the whole Universe is an aftereffect of intelligence expressing itself, not a result of some kind of accident or unthinking process. I never thought of it as a justification for espousing the fundamentalist Christian religious view, though. ;-)

Study Taoism or Buddhism instead. They are far more enlightening in terms of articulating intelligent design. They do not even propose a "God" who is somehow seen as separate from his creation (which he cannot be, by definition!)..they propose a unified reality that is itself the very function and working OF intelligence. It's innately intelligent, and that intelligence can be seen reflected in both the microcosm (subatomic particles) and the macrocosm (the whole ball of wax). This does not require a human-like God figure to run it like some big Kahuna.

Accordingly, I think Pat Robertson is talking horse puckey! (to use DougR's old phrase)

The problem is that that isn't so. There are tons of people out there who follow him and the others (oral roberts, jerry falwell, etc) who have tremendous power. Who do you think votes for dubya? And whose anger makes many politicians shake in their boots?

Didn't the voters of Dover, PA voted out the school board on the grounds of "Intelligent Design?" It now seems to me that "Intelligent Design" is more equivalent to (gasp) "Creationism." I thought "Intelligent Design" had more to do with omnipotent beings placing humans here on the planet known as Earth (I digress to a science fiction definition which seems to be IMHO what extreme environmentalists say indirectly).

I have always thought that Pat Robertson was 2 enchiladas short of a combination plate (or any other metaphor you can think of). Assasinating world leaders is one thing, but bombing a government agency? That is new to me. And now this condemnation of the town of Dover, what will it take for the people (and Mr. Robertson's parishioners) to see "the emporer has no clothes?" Any thoughts on this?

If you are waiting for "The Rapture", you live with lotsa hope that the world will end. Religion a la Pat Robertson appeals to people who do not think for themselves. Read some of his comments when he gives advice to people over their personal problems. He quotes from "The Book". Does so very convincingly, if ya believe a literal interpretation. The followers of Robertson are basically fairly stupid. Hell, his personal worth is estimated at over $200,000,000. Only thing I can think is that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. But, hey, I only read "The Book" 3 1/2 times, so what do I know? He presents his followers with a velcro presentation of biblical things--that 'velour on a background' stuff that Sunday schools use to begin the indoctrination. Robertson and that TV evangelist crew control millions of votes. Hell, wasn't Billy Graham a friend to many Presidents? Ain't far from that to having influence. And having billions of dollars at your disposal gives ya lots of influence in this world. IMO.

Nah, Paul Burke. God--who invented grandchildren, pecan trees, Berneice Reagon/Sweet Honey In The Rock, ripe avocados and tastebuds--is obviously putting all Its energy into spreading joy, health, peace.
Robertson is seriously mistaken. There's a prayer in the (Episcopal) 1928 prayer book that addresses Almighty God, "...who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live..."
I see so many wonderful people who struggle with the human tendency to anger/bitterness/fear, and its concommittent(sp?) energy toward revenge/vindictiveness. They know, first, that ACTING out those feelings is wrong. They attempt to use the energy to work toward being more reasonable and just themselves, to teach others how to live in greater health and peace with their neighbors, to find ways to protect the most vulnerable from harm--and they pray to God(see 1st parag. this post) to help them understand the evil and avoid it. They want to contribute to the flow of love and well-being where they are. Pat Robertson seems not to be following that path. He seems more interested in the politics of power and viciousness. "...Rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live..."               Tw

Pat Robertson is not the worst problem...he DOES have his lunatic followers, but it is folks like Tim LaHaye & Jerry Jenkins who wrote the "Left Behind" series that worry me. Have you seen them? They are nice, friendly, well-spoken regular fellows...who just happen to espouse a pretty scary viewpoint. They are getting to the ones who wouldn't listen to Pat R. alone.

Since it is considered so 'unseemly' (and often downright dangerous)to directly criticize anyone's religious views, even in a political campaign where your opponent is using religion to herd voters into his corral, I have a hard time seeing how to even have the debate on a level playing field!

Hmmm. Well, there's no doubt that American politicians all feel they must pay lip service to organized religion...or face the wrath of numerous voters...so they all do it to some extent.

You'd like politics in Canada better, Bill. Canadian politicians virtually never bring religion into their public debating. It would be considered kind of tacky to do so, I think.

Pat Robertson is just exercising his First Amendment rights in this country. It's up to the listeners to engage their cerebral matter and suss out for themselves what Pat is trying to say. It isn't Pat's fault if listeners blindly accept whatever drivel pops into his disillusioned brain.

Robertson's agenda is political, not religious. He is symbolic of the moneychangers that Jesus threw out of the synagogue. His politics and his religion are all about money.

I welcome the opportunity for him and those of his ilk to get the chance to broadcast their message across the airwaves - otherwise people like us would probably neither know what people like him are thinking, nor would we get the chance to examine the rationality of his thought processes. It is an educational experience, and keeps me from becoming too insular. Besides, his show 700 Club show is always good for a laugh. Pat Robertson is a joke, a well heeled joke. God does have a sense of humor.

Ah yes, the fickle finger of fate:

Jackie Mason's Finger Gesture - On the October 18, 1964 installment of THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW, as comedian Jackie Mason concluded his comedy routine he noticed some off-stage finger gestures from Ed Sullivan's indicating that his time was winding down. According to Mason, he jokingly took the moment to comment on the signs by saying "and here's a finger for you, and one for you..." Ed Sullivan thought that the glib finger joke reference was actually a case of Jackie Mason giving him the "finger" on-the-air. Outraged, Ed Sullivan barred Jackie Mason from any further appearances on his program. The controversy over the "finger" damaged Mason's career. He retaliated with a libel suit in the New York Supreme Court and won. They had viewed his performance and found "nothing offensive." However, the influence that Sullivan possessed relegated Jackie Mason to "show-business-limbo" forcing him to work in outlying Catskill mountain resorts and related second-hand entertainment establishment. Years later, Jackie Mason resurfaced in a successful Broadway Tony Award winning one-man show and in the short-lived sitcom CHICKEN SOUP/ABC/1989.

The thing nobody seems to notice is that Pat Robertson is the man behind the y2k bug scare that made fools out of so many people, and had a lot of computer programmers working overtime 6 years ago. He started flogging the idea that all the computers would shut down at midnight on New Year's eve of the year 2000 in spring of 1999. By November the mainstream media was picking it up, and pressing it as a possibility, which it never was. He created a panic and never had to answer for it.
I'm waiting for him to start the next one. He's got his own TV show to spread all the deadly rumors he wants to.
OH! After Katrina, FEMA listed Robertson's Operation Blessing as a charity to support if you wanted to support hurricane survivors. Half of all donations to Operation Blessing go to Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network.

Is The Huffington Post a reliable source, or is someone having me on?

"The Israeli government is planning to give up a large slice of land to American Christian evangelicals to build a biblical theme park by the Sea of Galilee where Jesus is said to have walked on water and fed 5,000 with five loaves and two fish.
A consortium of Christian groups, led by the television evangelist Pat Robertson, is in negotiation with the Israeli ministry of tourism and a deal is expected in the coming months."

Full story @ Guardian Unlimited. Is that a reliable source?

Jean:

The Y2K "scare" was based on plain technical facts concerning some COBOL, SNOBOL, BASIC and C programs of the sort that ran the Big Iron coordinating many companies, factories and manufacturing machines.

It came to little in the actual event, partly because millions of dollrs and hours had been spent looking for and correcting code lines which were vulnerable to the bug.

Although the impact was inflated by the panic mongers, they certainly did not invent the problem.

He is a blight, a self righteous moron who like ya said gives a bad name to Christians and Id imagine a fair amount of Jewish people who'd like to see an end to the neverending war over there. I'm still pickin' my jaw off the floor after listening to that IDIOT sphincter on all the cable news networks. I think HE'S demonic!!!!!!!!! Thing is no matter how low these slimies go they manage to crawl back outta their holes and back on TV--lookit Swaggert, Bakker etc. Swaggerts STILL on a batch of cable channels sweatin' and cryin' at his piano. Why IS that?? But the local church around the corner can't pay for its heat.

Spaw! Wonderful to see you back in form! LOL!!

Read last month's issue of Mother Jones, folks; devoted entirely to the Christian conservatives. People like Robertson have tons of money and behind-the-scenes orgs. which funnel it to further their dominionist agenda in taking over our country. There is one article from last month's MoJo which is still online. It's called "Nation Under God."

His program runs everday at 10a in our fair city and there are a LOT of viewers...that's the scarey part. Around here the evangelicals have industrial complex-looking churches which cater to one's every need. They ARE filling a gap of some sort in a lot of folks' lives. It would behoove us to figure out how to reach those folks and offer them an alternative...that is, if they aren't already too brainwashed.

... interesting point Anonny M. There is an Anglican church here in Saint JOhn's that has been running a hot lunch program for the inner city kids since 1898. The church had to close down in November along with this benevolent program because it couldn't afford the heat, upkeep, let alone the weekly food costs.

Did no one catch Pat's remark night before last that Ariel Sharon's stroke was God's punishment for giving away "God's land"?

Bin Laden undoubtedly thinks it was God's punishment for not giving it back fast enough. Both agree that Katrina was Divine punishment for America's sins, and that more earthquakes, hurricanes, and miseries lie in the future.

It's wonderful when people can agree.

Yeah and we have a quilters group that comes in on Monday mornings to make un-fancy quilts, filled with batting thanks to a Serta plant nearby, and they donate the blankets/quilts to a Salvation Army battered womens' shelter-to moms and kids-and they get to keep them. And we have such a humongous ol'heat-sucking building these ladies work with their coats on mostly all winter and we're worried about programming the thermostats to keep THEM going. Local soup kitchen is running outta food for homeless and poor neighborhood kids too. Meanwhile that buttwipe Robertson is out there on cable everyday spewing his hatred and judgemental CRAP in the name of Christians rakin' in dough from homebound widows and suckers who think his toothy smile is purely divine--makes me wanna puke!!! Any Christian who doesnt worry about the plight of the middle east, Israel, Arameans just is Biblically ignorant. Anyone who'd celebrate somebody having a stroke like Sharon is a fool.

I find in my many visits to the USA that the Country suffers from a very large overdose of bible-thumpers, turn your TV on any time of day and you are sure to tune in to one of these con-men.

I don`t see a lot of difference in Islam and Christianity when it comes to intolerance, those American pulpit-punchers are on a par with any Isamic cleric.

That's true. I forgot which Islamic cleric it was who said nearly the same about Sharon as Robertson did. If so many religious extremists agree that the stroke was god's work and only have a minor disagreement about for what reason god did it it must be true.

Not to forget the Jewish extremists who performed a solemn death curse regarding Sharon last summer and asked god to kill him. They now openly thank god for listening to them.
