You're Gonna Look Like a Monkey When You Get Old

I'm rearranging this song and I don't know where I learned it. Can you folks tell me the lyrics you know or have recorded? I don't think I have them all and there's probably lots of versions.
Help! Chance

Can't find the lyrics, but a Google search produces that it was written by Boozoo Chavis, also recorded by Hammie Nixon.

Micheal Hurley recorded it on his CD "Snockgrass". If no one else has them I'll post Hurley's version though he tends to do some serious rearranging himself.

Ok, Here is what Michael Hurley sings. Most verses are the same as the first with only the middle two lines changing.

YOU'RE GONNA LOOK LIKE A MONKEY WHEN YOU GET OLD

You're gonna look like a monkey when you get old
You're gonna look just like a monkey when you get old
I can tell 'bout your hair
You caught coconuts in the air
You're gonna look like a monkey when you get old

I can tell by eyes
You caught coconuts flying high

I can tell 'bout your knees
You been climbing up coconut trees

I can tell by your shape
Your first cousin must be a ape

Nobody stays a monkey but you when you get old
Nobody stays a monkey but you when you get old
I can tell by your shoes
You just love to dance the blues
You gonna look like a monkey when you get old

You're gonna look like a monkey when you get old
You're gonna look just like a monkey when you get old
I can tell by your breath
You been lovin' a monkey to death
That's right Sam

I'd forgotten the best verse, "lovin' a monkey to death"

I appreciate it, Earl.

I have a version of this song recorded by Roy Harvey ( of Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers) in 1930 or 1931 shortly after Poole died. I'll see if I can make out the lyrics and post them. This one is always a crowd pleaser. Scott

Seems like this is the kind of a song that you just make up verses as you go along. I've heard a few that I don't see in here.

This seems to be the original recording. You can hear it at RedHotJazz.com:

YOU'RE BOUND TO LOOK LIKE A MONKEY WHEN YOU GET OLD
(Clarence Williams, Alex Hill, 1930)
(As recorded by Clarence Williams' Novelty Band, Okeh 8798, May-22-1930.)

1. I can tell by your hair
You got monkey in you somewhere—

CHORUS: And you're bound to look like a monkey when you get old*.
When you get old*, when you get old*,
You're bound to look like a monkey when you get old*.

2. I can tell by your feet
You don't get enough to eat—

3. I can tell by your hand
Your pa was a monkey man—

4. I can tell by your jaw
Your pa was your pa—

[*Sometimes he sings "grow old" instead of "get old".]

The Online 78-rpm Discography Project also lists:

YOU'RE BOUND TO LOOK LIKE A MONKEY
Roy Harvey & Jesse Johnson, 1931
Birmingham Serenaders, 1935
Milton Brown & His Brownies, 1935

A few more couplets from Hank Penny's recording of YOU'RE BOUND TO LOOK LIKE A MONKEY:

I can tell by your face
You belong to the monkey race....

I can tell by your knees
You been a-climbin' these coconut trees....

I can tell by your jaw
That a monkey was your pa....

I can tell by your skin
That a monkey was your frien'....

I can tell by your hands
That you've got monkey glands....

I can tell by your nails
That your folks hung by their tails....

From: GUEST,HERE ARE THE LYRICS I KNOW....

I cannot remember where I learned this song, but I sang this tune to my children when they were very young and was one of their favorites (as well as mine), and here goes:

I can tell by your smell that you've been playing with a monkey's tail,
and I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.
When you get old, when you get old,
yes, I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.

I can tell by you knees that you've been playing in the coconut trees,
yes I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.
When you get old, when you get old.
Yes I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.

I can tell my your head that you've been sleeping in a monkey's bed,
Yes I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.
When you get old, when you get old
Yes I know that you'll be a monkey when you get old.
