BS: A solution to Fakebook

From: Mr Red

sorry not going to happen, but as James Clark Maxwell said "To Measure is to Know"
and another from a philosopher
"People don't Scrutinise, that which they are pleased to hear"

My observation is the benefit & the far more serious bugbear is the speed of communication.
If you slowed it down, the Putins of this world would not find such a handy propaganda conduit. But on the benefit side of connecting people it would barely register as a hindrance, and serve to assist in scrutinising just a soupçon.

However, referring to it as Fakebook could only serve to remind people how it dis-serves humanity.

In hindsight, it seems obvious that the final conquest of the United States and UK came about, not as a result of war and invasion, but simply because so many notable and ignorant people were purchaseable. History books, if any get written, will someday explain how those in and out of government, all had a price. Which when you think about it, makes a heartbreaking kind of sense. From its inception, our national culture has been predicated on the ruthless pursuit of profit. Sure we can all enjoy movies, books and TV shws that portray people putting principles ahead of personal gain. But it might be time to admit that in the real world, grandiose patriotism has always been a mask used to hide the banal self interest. Regardless, the sale is complete. Cash, not Kalashnikovs, sealed the deal.

You know, people will either be on Facebook or not. They will be aware of its limitations, or not.

This sort of a thread sounds like somebody got their feelings hurt, and they're trying to get even. It's the whine of a jilted lover. Facebook doesn't care. I find it stupid and annoying, but that's just me. I find people that talk shit about their exes stupid and annoying, too. Don't wanna share your feelings of hurt and betrayal.

If it wasn't for lazy journalists sat comfy on their arses obsessing with social media sites,
most of the time i'd be completely unaware twitter and facebook exist...

Didn't papers and TV used to have to send hacks out into the cold and rain scooping real news...???

I hate the smug posts of photos of other people’s brats and grand-brats particularly irritating, not to mention frustrating that they should be so stupid as to put photos of kids they are supposed to love and protect out into the wild, where anyone can use them for whatever perverse, or perverted, purpose they wish.

One thing FarceBook has taught me is that there are a very great many people who have little imagination or common sense.

They're called voters, Backwoodsman.

Jeri, I never heard you, in effect, minimize/ignore the Russain attack before. Maybe you are just talking about Facebook and twitter as a toilet for the human soul and I am talking about the dissolution of Democracy using free speech as a wedge.

PFR has a good point.

Calling other people's children or grandchildren brats is a very good way to rub people up the wrong way, John. Was that your intention? I will not get into a long winded argument on this so will just say that you do not know the vast number of children and grandchildren of those on Mudcat and I believe that labelling those you know nothing about brats is one of the most vacuous acts I have witnessed in a long time. I thought better of you. Call the parents by all means but not those innocent of whatever damage you feel they have inflicted on you.

I think not Mr Red.

I can obviouly only speak for myself, but whenever I see or hear such amusingly original perjoratives as:

Fakebook, Farcebook, Micro$oft/shaft, Crapple, (or in the UK) Remoaner, Brexshitter etc, etc...

they only serve to remind me that the communicator is probably a bit of a twat.

Ed - apart from that, I tend to agree with you...

You have a point, Dave. But the important point of my post was about people endangering their kids by posting their photos all over FaceBook for any paedophile or like-farmer to latch on to. In comparison to some of the horror-stories of mis-use of children’s pictures on social media, I believe my use of the word ‘brat’ really is of very little consequence. And, like you, I’ve no intention of getting into a protracted discussion, so that’s my only comment.

Anyway, here’s my post again, with the offending words replaced...

“I hate the smug posts of photos of other people’s kids and grand-kids particularly irritating, not to mention frustrating that they should be so stupid as to put photos of kids they are supposed to love and protect out into the wild, where anyone can use them for whatever perverse, or perverted, purpose they wish.

The only social network I've been 'pressured' into joining is NextDoor,
primarily because the mrs is nosey what's going on in our town centre,
and we're looking for word of mouth on roofers and builders...

So these are folks living within streets of us...
and I have noticed more than a few dodgy looking photos of mums/dads/grandparents and kids..

I'm sure the families think these photos are innocent and cute,
but to more cynical minds they definitely look 'open to interpretation'
by folks of a sinister pervy inclination...

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these families,
keen to show their intimate moments to all and sundry,
would be first out on a vigelante hunt for an accused neighbourhood paedo...?????

Thanks John. I did not think it would be your intention to cause offence but you know what some on here are like!

I fully accept the point you make about posted photos being used for nefarious purposes but that is not really the fault of Facebook is it. Social media is simply a tool like any other and can be used for good or ill. They do go out of their way to make sure that you are fully aware of how to keep your privacy settings to ensure your family photos are only shared with the people you want to see them. In the past, even with film cameras, you could get some perv in the developer’s labs keeping the photos he wanted to distribute to his (or her I suppose!) dodgy mates. If you are going to blame Facebook for the proliferation of paedophilia then I think you may as well extend that blame to Messrs Kodak and Eastman!

No problem Dave, sometimes I forget that things I’m smiling at as I type don’t necessarily come over as the ‘gentle joke’ I intend them to be.

On your last point, I’m not actually ‘blaming’ FB - I completely blame the bastards who mis-use those photos - but, knowing that they can be mis-used, I’m astonished that people continue to take that risk. I’ve never posted any photos of my own offspring as children, and never will. I’d strongly advise others to do the same - fore-warned is fore-armed.

And it’s not just paedophiles - just check out the photos of children that have been photoshopped to look as though they are deformed, or have missing limbs, which are then used by unscrupulous ‘Like-Farming’ pages. You know the kind of thing - “People are ashamed of my disease - I bet I won’t get any Likes”, yadda yadda.

But if people want to take the risk that their kid’s pic will be hi-jacked and used that way, it’s their choice. Definitely not for me though.

Don, I saw the focus of the OP was "Facebook is just evil, let's call it cutesy names" and ridicule it, and not so much on Russian election interference, which is despicable. It would be very good if Facebook or SOMEBODY could figure out how to block the bots from all social media, but I suspect that if that happened, complaining about Facebook and calling it cutesy names would still happen.

Far from it, they are putting a mirror up to people who call people a twat. Some people only see what they want to see. But pontificate none the less.

Dunning-Kruger got there first. But then how do you explain that to people who call people twats?

Seeing what you want to see is like wearing a MAGA hat with a bill so long you see less than half that is going on around you.
In many cases it is really only seeing what you are allowed to see.

Taking the hat off is like; enlightenment, expanding your consciousness, using your third eye, opening the universe, letting the light in or simply seeing clearly.

An egoless perspective beyond self interest is more valuable than $.

Be that as it may there is a marked increase of immature behavior and rhetoric that used to be behind closed doors, that is now openly expressed, which I call the Trump Effect. I first identified the Trump Effect by summarizing the recent complaints by my wife regarding the words and deeds of minions and senior government officials she works with. While I do not use FB, I speculate long time users have seen the same inane banal behavior.

Adverse maligning nick names and whining words of vengence are the symptoms of this kind of dumbing down.

I fear the Trump effect is spreading like the measles.

You know, Don, I saw the beginning of a phenomenon with the talk shows a la Jerry Springer. They were the American Colosseum, or the current preferred bloodsport. People generally got more stupid when they enjoyed entertainment by violence and ridicule. I think that's where it started, or rather, that's where the audience got started.

The ignorance and gullibility of people means they can be easily manipulated by politicians. To not be suspicious of them, but of the people who want to tell them an unpopular truth. I don't know if there's a similar phenomenon in the UK (or anywhere else), but we've got to dig ourselves our of it before we kill the whole planet.

As for Facebook, it's like any other publisher. You have to think for yourself, and be suspicious enough to check facts before you swallow them.

Yes 'fakebook'.. mildly funny at best the first time it appeared..

It wasn't devised to be funny, it was devised to make people think. At second, at third, ........ for ever.

There you go, some people do...................... Others see a different interpretation. Which is a problem with social media. I have seen storms on Fakebook that begin from innocent beginnings misinterpreted. It escalates because of the speed. People read at speed, people write at speed, and IQ is related to speed. If you don't understand that, slow down!

And some people don't have that comfort in their own skin, they improve their self-image by belittling others. Dunning-Kruger anaesthetises them.

It takes all sorts.

What about the owners who sold the private information of customers/victims and hired a duplicitous Russain to their board?

Hardly. Farcebook was devised, and is carried on with the sole intention TO MAKE MONEY

PFR, that's all that page SHOULD be used for. It isn't durable. I am the voice of "this belongs at mudcat.org, not on facebook" to not lose stuff people post there because they don't belong here or think it doesn't matter. "What harm can it do?" is not a harmless question - Facebook sucks in eyeballs and ad revenue, and the few revenue ads at Mudcat are the poorer for it.

Stilly - I've been a member of a British guitar forum for about 20 years.
It is an amazing archive of a long gone guitar brandname.
Facebook has all but killed it.
I'm just glad it still struggles on...

What reaally annoys me is that newcomers end up at facebook first,
seemingly without realising the parent forum exists...

Guitarist post a wealth of info which should be contibuted to the forum archive,
but they don't, and it gets lost forever.

Some of those facebookers must waste enormous time
reseaching and photographing for their facebook posts... and it's gone in days...

Whereas the forum archive has remained available and easily searchable for 2 decades..

..but for how much longer...???

You, too, can become a nag and ask people to post it where it belongs, on a more durable site. It isn't a popularity contest, it's trying to keep the information in play in a searchable site. I understand completely.

Well lookye here:

A team at IBM have devized an AI/Algorithm that changes offensive words and renders the text more polite. The success rate isn't quoted but cames to outperform other attempts. They only mention Twatter & Reddit as the test media.

OK it is censorship (make of that what you will) but if successful it would be a good cyber trap for what all** reasonable peeps would accept.

** OK the field is open for people to declare their reasonableness or otherwise. Not that they need an open invite, as they have already declared.

The only "solution" to Farcebook is to put it out of existence.

Does Schmuckerberg really need any more money?

Compared to the harm that his bullshit-mongering site does?

Not only does Farcecbook need to be broken up as as an antitrust/monopoly question, it needs to be prevented from distributing, promoting & enabling hate speech, conspiracy theories, and racist bullshit.

Has Schmuckerburg no shame?
