BS: What does 8 thousand pounds buy?

By law I have to spend 8,000 pounds. What else could it buy instead of a stupid fence?

Perhaps 4 tons of feathers?

8 thousand pounds? Might not be enough for a cheap new car. Maybe a motorcycle?

You could buy a house somewhere a bit weird where not a lot of people are keen on living.

Give half to charity, and buy a Democratic Presidential candidate with the remainder.

You're right- 4,000 pounds should get a lot more than one...

"What does 8 thousand pounds buy?"
Less and less and still heading down
As a fan of film noire, I still can't get over the idea that the proceeds of a sensational bank robbery wouldn't pay for a few months on curry and Guinness

well in the K we have Poundland, where everything sells cor one nicker.

that is 8,000 choices. Or if you are persistent and find a remaindered box - you might make it 8,002.

Of course you might have to find uses for some items you would never consider buying...............

If the regulations state a fence is required the 8000 could be used to pay the resultant fines for non compliance!

I am a law biding bloke and wouldn't want a toddler wander into a swimming pool. It's one of those hidden costs I didn't expect.

8K of toilet paper might come in handy for black market profits if Brexit ever hits hard? I heard the UK has to import the stuff.

If in a residential area with children a childproof fence would be required as a "duty of care" in many places. It may be a bit of a financial shock, but:

Unfortunately several years ago I knew a 2year old that managed to wander from the family and drowned in a pond. This was a nightmare for the entire neighbourhood. I cannot imagine how the parents felt.

Meanwhile a thick nylon tarp with bronze attachments protects all except giant Orachs from harm. I will be glad to get rid of the old stockade fence. It made the house look like F troop.

I made a mixture of Linseed oil and WD-40 to be lightly applied by spray to bring out the grain in richer colors.
Unsprayed areas will turn grey over time. Stencils of short pine trees and ferns would allow the fence bottoms to blend with terrain.
Or I could make sillouettes of famous DC monuments that would become grey but the next owners might hate that.

Any ideas?

8000 pounds of what? 8000 lbs of gold would buy a lot more than 8000 lbs of manure!

Forget fences. It might just buy a few feet of Trump's wall?

Euros will be accepted by many shops in London and other tourist areas, not so much outside. Sadly, my savings are mostly in sterling. To buy Euros you can go to a bank or the post office, and get ripped off, or to a travel agent and get totally ripped off, or buy them at an airport or international train station (we only have one of the latter), where you will be completely and utterly ripped off. Or you can buy from a variety of internet sites which will post them to you such as travelFX, these give the best rates.

We should have joined the Euro in 2002, when we could have got around 1.6 for each of our pounds, now thanks to our hopeless politicians its 1.14. For this I blame Gordon Brown, about the only thing he got wrong. My 6000 was an exaggeration, but we have been severely disadvantaged compared with our colleagues in mainstream Europe.

8000 pounds should buy about 2000 pints ...

Which law forces you to spend 8000 pounds?

If you have to spend 8000 on a fence perhaps you need some lateral thinking to see what else the fence could do.
What is on the other side?
How high?
Get a Banksy mural?

Heck, Don, the problem is obvious! You need a secure fence around your yard so you can have a pool. You're being charged 8,000 Pounds Sterling for it. But you live in Washington, DC, where things are paid for in US Dollars. That means you and your fencing contractor are in different countries! You're in the US and he's in the UK! No wonder the fence is so expensive! That 8,000 pound invoice probably includes air fare for his whole crew from Heathrow to Reagan National! Find an American contractor and he'll probably do it for half as much. In dollars.

Or thinking again, if you look on myhome.ie (and I'm sure on equivalent British sites) you can buy a site in a remote area for 10,000.

Is this a fictional 8,000 you're spending? You could have a hell of a party? You could pay the back rent of a family about to be made homeless by a cuckoo fund? You could buy ebikes for you and yours? You could buy a sailboat and sail the seas of your fair land?

Do you just need to get rid of the money, as in the plots of various heartwarming comedies where the spender will inherit a million upon getting rid of the dosh? Or is there a purpose to this spending?

What would you like to spend it on?

If that's hard...

What should I spend it on?
What would I really like to spend it on?
What would I really like to spend it on without judgement from anyone else?

And what would be the best use of the money?
etc

I'll send you a spreadsheet if you want :)

Funny thing, but in sleepy little seaside resort of Bundoran there were 3 unfinished houses (that I spotted) just sitting there waiting for the builders to finally fit the double glazing, one just needed rendering. Legacy of the 2008 crash clearly. Acres of mobile homes and plenty of surfing shops for the usual summer crowd.

Set dancing was frantic, despite the chronological demographic.
