Singing shanties in East Kent

Hi - just wondering whether there is anyone else who's interested in maritime songs in the Canterbury area or roundabout who'd be interested in performing together, or whether there are any shanty groups looking for members locally. I'm only a folk-club-stand-up-and-sing type of bloke but when I return to my native Kent in the summer it's something I'd be interested in getting into.

Hi Dave
When you are back in Kent it may be worth checking out the monthly Shanty Session in Central London. Third Sunday in the month from 12 noon to about 3:00pm, organised by The Hog Eye Men. You could make some good contacts there. I know we have had people from the Broadstairs area in the past.

Thanks, Garry - may be a bit far to toddle off for a jaunt but thanks for the info!

Check out dead horse morris. They have some fine sessions and are bases near Whitstable.

Hi Dave, yes I might be interested. If you join Mudcat and put another post on this thread then I could send you a pm with my contact details.

I live just outside Whitstable and, like you have been a stand up club performer and, in the dim and distant past, I was in a group.

Joining is dead easy, hopefully her from you soon.

All sounds good, thank you - I'll get proper membership so that we can get in contact off the forum, Kampervan.

Hi Dave, Whitstable Folk Club meets every last Friday at the Labour Club. Mark Lawson of Dead Horse and many other things folk related is our MC.

Sounds like I'll have to start attending Whitstable folk club when I'm back living in Kent! Not that many sessions or clubs in Canterbury or around, so it'll be good to find somewhere relatively local.

You will not be short of places to go in East Kent Dave.
Wednesdays at Faversham Folk Club, Thursday tune sessions at Faversham and Folk at The Drum North Stanford, Fridays at Deal FC, Tuesdays at Rochester Good Intent FC or Rainham FC, Mondays at Sheppey Acoustic.Various monthly session/singarounds too, good one at Broadstairs is Woodshed usually on second Sundays at the Wrotham Arms.Apologies to those I've missed

There's Chris Roche's/Dave Pleasants' shanty crew (the Shanty Crew) too. And keep an eye out for where Knights and Mageean are booked. They do a lot of shanties so places that book them may have other shanty stuff too.

Oh, and the Shipwright Shanty Crew if still going.

Hard Pressed are probably too far west for you.

And Swinging the Lead although I think their base is Dartford.

Thanks, Richard - I'll have a word with Dave as I occasionally get down to Stanford for FATD when I'm down.

Are there any sea shanty groups currently in the Whitstable/ Faversham area?
