BS: Hockey

I probably should research this "Like on You Tube" before writing about it , but it just came to me.

I was watching "My Red Wings" the other night(and it could be any other them at this point.)and realized that the style of hockey that is being played goes back to the time when the Russians came over in 72. I believe that was the year.

Here is what took place back then. The "R" would rush up the ice and the pass the puck back to their defencemen. They would circle around go up and back again and only go over the blue line in the opposition's area when they were certain they had control to make a play. This was not heard of in our system. We would get the puck and it was straight up the ice to make a play and score if possible. We (back then)would never think of passing it back in our own zone only to rush forward.
Anyone who lives hockey think I'm on the right track?

Yup. I was always pissed about the "dumping in" that seemed to become prevalent in the 80s and the go for it stuff that always was the big deal in Canuck hockey. Keep control of the puck. Ya flip a coin, ya got 50/50... ya keep the puck, ya got better odds.

Makes sense to me. Could be that the Russians played football a few times. >;-)

If ya got the puck, keep the puck. Yer on the right ice fer sure.

Keep yer stick on the ice eh.

I agree. There was just a special about that US/Russian series, and I also thought it DID look just like the style now. I guess it took this long for it to trickle down thru youth hockey, and back up again into the N.

Well, I'm waiting for the Cubs to take the Stanley Cup. Or the Ryder Cup or the Americas Cup or even the Sipee Cup.

Dang, they gotta win something sometime.

I agree Susan. It became so clear I thought I was on drugs. Which I don't do.

It's still not done enough IMO - it is the main cause of my talking to the TV during a hockey game. Dumping the puck in makes no sense to me unless the team is looking to make a line change which we can't usually see on TV. I do agree that the game has gradually become more free flowing since that famous series - I would like to see the larger, international size rinks in the NHL which would open things up even more for today's faster players.

Removing the center line from the off-side rule changed the style of play as well allowing the wingers to lurk by the opponents blue line while the rearguards moved or passed the puck forward.
Before Bobby Orr no defenseman would skate behind an opponents net. Orr was fast enough to do that and still get back in time to cover his position. It changed the game because others tried to copy him but never could and break-aways became more common. In the old days the centre was a stickhandler who carried the puck in to set up the wingers while the defense covered the points. The intent was to get a shot on net as soon as possible and then get back in a defensive position.
The Russians excelled in puck control and conditioning allowing them to capitalize on opponents mistakes.

I used to do an impression of The Gumper and I'll try to describe it.

"Worsley is cutting down the angle. Hull is over the blueline! He winds up!" At this point I would assume the stance with knees together and slightly bent, stick on the ice, open glove hand close in and elbow slightly bent, head turned slightly to the side and down with eyes tightly shut. "Hull lets it go!" I then faked getting hit in the head and fell... "ANOTHER GREAT SAVE BY THE GUMPERRRR!"

Hey, it made the other kids laugh.

Minds me... I gotta take my skates and sticks the Boys & Girls Club. I completely forgot. DARN!

I heard the Wings are dressing only nine players in the next game. Seems all the rest have learned to dress themselves.

Hahahaha!! Good one 999, doesn't fit as a Wings jokethough. More like the Montreal Canadians. Like last evening's stupid loss to Boston. But their doing real good. They are now only three points from last place. If they keep playing like they are thee will get there. Gnu, I did watch the game but will miss the next one as I am out of town till Sunday. Damn. Nice record to get and now to try and continue it as well as finishing overall in first place for the President's Trophy.

I still got hopes that my Sabres will make it into the playoffs.

You must be terribly disappointed Dan. The Sabers were picked at the beginning of the year as one of the most improved and Stanly cup favorites. I guess you just never know in hockey.

The NHL hockey team from Saint Louis upset Boston for the playoffs and the Stanley Cup.

I like the balance of it.
Boston is such a juggernaut in professional sports,
and everybody, even Boston, has got to lose sometimes.

The St. Louis Blues had to be persistent,
and campaign and train for a long time,
to win this season.
That town must be going utterly mad.

fyi beer. tihkainov and tarasov boith said their "system" came from watching the fifties and sixties montreal canaadiens. puck control hockey. worked better in europe and international play because there the goon hockey of the nhl was illegal. worked great for les glorieux when they had enforcers to best the crap out of the goons. john fergeson never lost a fight(including beating gordie howe) and ted harris was feared for his hits. then the next generation larry robinson could break the board with a hip check to an opposition player. (and lapointe was only a little less gentle) when the seventies canadiens broke the flyers that is exactly what happened. larry robinson broke the boards with garry dornhoffer and those broad street bullies lost their courage thereafter. but robinson did it clean while they were the dirtiest team in history. the old toronto maple leafs the second most dirty. then the bruins.

so it was great to see the boston thugs lose this year. brad marchand is the dirtiest player in modern hockey with chara as number two.

It ought to give you a bit of satisfaction, ollaimh,
that Zdenko Chara got his face smashed up
and now
his jaws are full of metal holding everything together.

This story appears to confirm Ollaimh's opinion.

No mention of Tuukka Rask, though.
