I should say Hi too.

I'm another one from South Wales, but strangely I also lived in Exeter for two years. I've been singing folk songs of various kinds since I was a very small child with my mother playing the piano for me and my brothers to sing. I've since tried my hand at playing a variety of instruments including fife, flute, recorder, violin and fiddle styles and I still sing when I get the chance, especially now to my little daughter. I have collected two books full of my favourite songs and I'm still keen to learn new ones.

Spot, I saw the PCO at Prague Castle a couple of years ago and loved them. Unfortunately they weren't on anymore during our stay so I never got a CD.

Pirandello and Zaba

Welcome from me. 2 interesting names!! I like songs in Czech, particularly by "The Prague Castle Orchestra" whom I saw busking last December at the   ...errrmmm... Prague Castle!! Had to buy their CD and have it on in the car all the time, much to the annoyance of my less cultured friends.. (Stuff 'em, I think PCO are great!!)    Anyone else like 'em??

                Regards to all..... Spot

Wow! I disappear for a couple of days and suddenly there are something like 80 messages of welcome-thank you all very much for your warm greetings; and I was nicely surprised to see so many people from this neck of the woods.

I'm a new returnee to the folk scene having been playing electric guitar on the Dark Side for the past few years. I've sort of lost track with what's been going on. Acoustic guitar was always my first love since I started playing way back when everything was in black and white. I never really listened to much traditional folk and my mentors were people like Roy Harper, Al Stewart, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Diz Disley, Ralph McTell, Noel Murphy-all the usual suspects!

Currently I'm working on an acoustic duo project with my best, and oldest, friend with some original material and songs from Planxty, Richard Thompson and others. The next thing I need to do is hunt out suitable venues for the Elderly Brothers...or it might be Airport Convention; we haven't decided yet.

Again, thanks for the warm welcome,
Toodle pip

Andrew

PS Pirandello is the cat.

Jim, I'm really glad you like it, "Fiannans" are very well friends of mine. And you can't imagine what the pity you didn't see us playing some of these songs as a stage play - who didn't see me starring as an Old Maid in the Garret, doesn't know what the real arts are :-).

Wee Little Drummer is really nice. I wouldn't pull his leg if he wasn't.
I'm listening to Finnegan's Wake now. This loses nothing in the translation.

Check it out! F i a n n a n

Hmmm... is there anything wrong using the word "kindergarten"? They've tought us to use it for the place children can go from they are 3 till they are able to go to school (which is when they are 6 or 7 here). May be "nursery school" would be better?
I can't say whether "Zshaba" would be the right pronunciation, becouse I can't say how to pronounce such as word in English... but it looks rather strange, doesn't it?
Weelittledrummer confuses me, I can't undestand his posts, so I ignore him...
If you are interested, you can try this and hear some Irish songs in Czech ("Poor Paddy Works on the Railway" and "Finnegan's Wake") - I think it could be funny for you to hear these well known songs in such as strange language Czech must be for you :-).

Interesting word that. "Kindergarten" I don't suppose anyone would send their children if it was called "Sortagarten" or "Cruelergarten". hmmm!

So it's "Zshaba" then? See Weelittledrummer, .... watch him!

Susan, that may this sound... it is something like this sound the name Jean (in French) begins... But I've made a mistake saying you know one Czech word with the correct spelling, becouse "žaba" is a dialect form of the proper literary form "žába". In Morava (the easter part of Czech Republic) we say it shorter as "žaba" in Čechy (the western part) they say it longer "žába".
End of the linguistic part ;-).
Jim, it seems I'm a folkaholic too... and my children've got this desease from me - my 4-year-old daughter likes to sing "Look at the coffin, with its golden handles" (in my friend's Czech translation, of course) and my 6-year-old son likes Cod Liver Oil and teachers in the kindergarten are really surprised with such as songs :-).

Hi all,
I'm from Brno, Czech Republic. I've started to post to Mudcat only a few days before, but I've been there many many times before. I don't play any instrument (trying to play recorder, but my 10-year-old son is much better) and I'm not very good singer, but I'm trying to traslate some Irish and Scottish songs and shanties to Czech and Mudcat is realy great place rich with information for me. Many many fine people ready to help, many many fascinating threads, almost all the lyrics I've ever wanted to have - all of this I've found here.

Zaba (correct spelling in Czech is Žaba, but I'm afraid, most of you wouldn't see it right - and it means the Frog ;-))

Hi Andrew from rainy Cornwall. I come up to Exeter quite alot as the Union S W Regional Office is there. It's got some Really good shops as well... You might like to come down to the Fox and Hounds at Bridestowe 11 - 13 May for our weekend of singing. Turn left at Sourton Down and head for Tavistock. The pub is on the left. There might even be a Mudgather on the top of the Tor on the Sunday morning. Welcome
