Comedy is not enough on its own for a Folk Club but Festivals have more time and need to keep up the action.Of course B&D have a very strong musical talent to draw on as well; I really am looking forward to seeing them at Banbury.

Wingin It ( Blackford Festival)Far too much talent for their own good.

Kevin Brown ( Bideford Festival) a brilliant blues guitarist.

Andi Neate (Dunkeld songwriters festival)

But the best is still Les Barker.

The 'best festival act' should be capable of wowing an audience with excellent folk music, both vocal and instrumental, leading brilliant sessions and holding informative (and fun) workshops. Obviously the only answer is:

Last Night's Fun

If the criteria is the one set by Les from Hull I'd second Last Night's Fun, Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, the New Rope String Band and Cloudstreet. I'd also suggest the rather good Kerfuffle.

Chris

PS - I'd suggest my own band, Forsh, but a) modesty forbids and b) we're already booked for that weekend in May next year! :-) Hope the festival goes well - it looks like the makings of a real cracker!

This thread raises the questions: what are the criteria that makes an act better at festivals that others? And are the criteria different from those of a "best club act"?

If an artist has a good act, do they necessarily go down well in both clubs and festivals, or are the criteria different?

Are there any acts who are good at festivals but lousy in clubs, or vice versa?

Scrump, if there's any difference, it has to do with size and cost!

In general you'll see more bands at festivals and more solo performers at clubs. Even if you're a soloist or a duo, festival organisers seem to want you to form up a 4 or 5 piece band to fill their bigger stages.

Or clubs can't afford to pay for bands, where festivals can.
