I was pleased to see "Needle of Death" posted several times.

Probably "Dead Flowers" is another classic for nomination.

And I take full credit for reviving the 1807 drinking song titled "The Mariner's Compass Is Grog."

Cheerily,

Da Second Week Of Deer Camp

Spoken:
Hey there goes one (BANG!)
Hey you shot my cow!

It's the second week of deer camp
I got a swollen head
I'm lying with the dustballs
Underneath the bed
An icy breeze is blowing
Into the tongue and groove
My pants are frozen to the floor
And I'm too sick to move
I didn't drink so many
Just thirty cans of beer
It musta been that last shot
That put me under here

CHORUS
It's the second week of deer camp
And all the guys are here
We drink, play cards and shoot the bull
But never shoot no deer
The only time we leave the camp
Is when we go for beer
The second week of deer camp
Is the greatest time of year

I remember playing poker
That weasel Musty won
He's wearing my new swampers
And sleeping with my gun
He's snoring like a chainsaw
The camp smells like a dump
Someone's dirty underwear
Is hanging on the pump

Mickey's in the woodbox
Weener's on the stove
His flannel shirt is smoking (sniff)
I wonder if he knows (YEOW!)

CHORUS

Beadle's crawling through the door
I think he got frostbite
He passed out in the outhouse
And he's been there since last night
Goofus stumbled through the door
He says he got a buck
He was coming from the wayside
And hit it with his truck
Musty cracked a beer and said
It's time to celebrate
Goofus got the first buck
Since 1968

CHORUS

I protest that one form is not acceptable to co exist with the other.
I have therefore found a place where the reference possibly could become split:

The desert
An infinite number of dust particles collected together by the revelation of barren seabed and the drying out of certain parts for an indefinite and prolonged period of time. And we're long past "Stalks and seeds again"

In other words, beer and drugs are mostly interdependent.

You could of course try Afganistan, in which case I disagree with the lyrics of the song and I think the guest must hail from such a place. Of course he could be Texan.

Disclaimer: Whatever you do don't drink beer with opiates, especially not heroin. In fact don't even go there.

Final deduction - The lyrics should be changed to "In Heaven there ain't no beer"

Thank you, Desert Dancer. It must have been the booze or the drugs that did it!

To repeat: "In heaven there is no beer" gives you two for one: references to both booze and other drugs in one song!

Fats Waller's "You'se A Viper" is about his dedication to pot. Dave Van Ronk did an outstanding version on his jug band record, but all good folkies already know that.

Don't Bogart That Joint

Lyrics: Lawrence Wagner
Music: Elliot Ingber

Played by Little Feat's Paul Barrere and Bill Payne with Phil & Friends. The original verson (on the soundtrack of "Easy Rider") was by Fraternity Of Man. It was subsequently covered by Little Feat.

    Chorus
Don't bogart that joint my friend
    Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint my friend
    Pass it over to me

    Roll another one
    Just like the other one
You've been holding on to it
And I sure will like a hit

    [chorus]

    Roll another one
    Just like the other one
That one's burned to the end
Come on and be a real friend

    [chorus]

Recordings

    1969?                 Easy Rider (Soundtrack)
1988                 The Last Record Album (Little Feat)

How about "The Pusher" by Hoyt Axton? I think the first verse goes:
I've smoked a lot of grass
And I've popped a lot of pills
But I've never done nothing
That my spirit couldn't kill
There's a lot of people walking around
With tombstones in their eyes
But the pusher he don't care
If you live or if you die.
God damn the pusher...

Say Goodbye To Annie.

1.

Say goodbye to Annie,
The pain is finally past,
She lives no more beyond the edge,
Her soul is free at last.
Free to rise above the streets
Where strangers go if they dare,
And people talk of days to come,
If God the time can spare;
You live your life on a highwire,
Play a deadly game,
When you're born to be,
A child of city streets,
Where all the junkies look the same.

2.

What chance had Annie,
When even before she was born,
She had a taste for alcohol,
Her innocence was gone.
And on and on she stumbled on,
Between the night and the day,
She never learned to live her life
In the usual kind of way.
See the lives around you,
Trickle down the drain,
When you're born to be,
A child of city streets,
Where all the junkies look the same.

3.
She kept her distance
She played with her charm
She hung around with a man who died
With a needle in his arm.
Down she spiraled
Down like a leaf from a tree
Calling out to the ones she loved
To keep her company.
You take your chances
And you take the strain
When you're born to be
A child of city streets
Where all the junkies look the same

4.

Say goodbye to Annie
The pain is finally past
She lives no more beyond the edge
Her soul is free at last.

Soldier's Joy (Guy Clark & Shawn Camp)

First I thought a snake had got me, it happened dreadful quick
T'was a bullet bit my leg, right off I got sick
I came to in a wagonload of ten more wounded men
Five was dead by the time we reached that bloody tent

Gimme some of that Soldier's Joy, you know what I mean
I don't want to hurt no more my leg is turnin' green

The doctor came and looked at me and this what he said
Your dancin' days are done, son, it's a wonder you ain't dead
Then he went to work with a carvin' knife sweat fell from his brow
'bout killed me tryin' to save my life when he cut that lead ball out

Give me some of that Soldier's Joy, ain't you got no more
Hand me down my walkin' cane I ain't cut out for war

Red blood run right through my veins, run all over the floor
Run right down his apron strings like a river out the door
He handed me a bottle said, son drink deep as you can
He turned away then he turned right back with a hacksaw in his hand

Gimme some of that Soldier's Joy you know what I like
Bear down on that fiddle boys just like Saturday night
Gimme some of that Soldier's Joy you know what I crave
I'll be hittin that Soldier's Joy til I'm in my grave

Thanks Emjay!

Mudcatter Pat Cooksey wrote one called Mary Anne; though the lyrics aren't on his website, I'm sure you could request them by email. It's a "prodigal son" type story about a girl who goes to the big city, goes astray, and dies - I'm pretty sure there was a reference to injectable drugs in there.

Marion's Catnip Blues is a gem -- definitely worth learning and including.
Then there is Wreck on the Highway, I don't know who wrote it, but I remember Roy Acuff singing it, only one line comes to mind right now,

There was whiskey and blood on the highway,
But I didn't hear nobody pray.

The Wild Rover is from late 17th century England, 150 years before there was a temperance movement.

There are some pretty good temperance songs though. "Johnny My Man" is one one of the best.

The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" might fit into your set somewhere...

In the liner notes for his "Great Days" anthology, John Prine claims that this song isn't about marijuana:

Illegal Smile

When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad
Seem like total silence was the only friend I had
Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized
That I was havin' .. no fun

Chorus:
But fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Last time I checked my bankroll,
It was gettin' thin
Sometimes it seems like the bottom
Is the only place I've been
I Chased a rainbow down a one-way street... dead end
And all my friends turned out to be insurance salesmen

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls
Tryin' to get away
From all the ears inside my walls
I dreamed the police heard
Everything I thought... what then?
Well I went to court
And the judge's name was Hoffman

Ah but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun
Well done, hot dog bun, my sister's a nun

More about morphine: "Miner's Lullaby" by Utah Philips. Click here for lyrics, dots/chords, and introduction. Apparently miners used to carry a dose of morphine with them in order to die peacefully in case of a cave-in.

If you want to include some humour, here's one I wrote about catnip addiction, with some reference to the Cocaine Blues. If you're interested, I could teach you the melody over the phone, or send a tape if you're in no rush.

Catnip Blues

Lyrics and music © 2003 Marion Parsons

Woke up this evening, mood for a trip,
All I want for supper is a roll in the nip
Oh catnip, take my last life away.

Oh catnip's a devil, and catnip's a cheat
Fall from that high, you don't land on your feet
Oh catnip, take my last life away.

Cocaine is for horses, and whiskey's for men
But 'nip is a poor old kitty's worst friend
Oh catnip, take my last life away.

My claws have gone dull, at night I can't see
The sofa tried to scratch me and the mice they play with me
Oh catnip, take my last life away.

Oh Fluffy and Mittens ain't got what I need
Don't want a tom, just wanna roll in the weed
Oh catnip, take my last life away.

I don't need no saucer, and no kitty treat
For just one more leaf you know I'd give up meat
Oh catnip, take my last life away

What about Soldier's Joy

Lyrics:

Grasshopper sitting on a sweet potate vine
Grasshopper sitting on a sweet potate vine
Grasshopper sitting on a sweet potate vine
Along comes a chicken and says you're mine

I'm a gonna get a drink don't you want to go ?
I'm a gonna get a drink don't you want to go ?
I'm a gonna get a drink don't you want to go ?
All for soldier's joy

Well it's twenty-five cents for the morphine
Fifteen cents for the beer
Twenty-five cnets for the morphine
Gonna take me away from here

I am my momma's darling boy
I am my momma's darling boy
I am my momma's darling boy
Singing 'bout soldier's joy

Here's one about morphine from Michelle Shocked (on the album Arkansas Traveller).

Shaking Hands

Shaking hands and fingers that do tremble
Soldier's Joy has been a bitter pill
Though in battle, a brave man I resemble
Alone I am a coward without will

Pierce McGee from the great State of Missouri
To the Show-Me-State militia I belong
And to judge from the pride on the Confederate side
I'd say five hundred thousand rebels can't be wrong

A rebel stand is no place for a traitor
A loveless Union cannot bend us to her will
Cannot command the soldiers who now hate her
Nor demand the fealty of her generals

I took a rifle ball in my shoulder
But my entire body filled with pain
I pleaded with them all at the field hospital
"Oh, God, another shot of morphine!"

Soldier's Joy, oh what's the point in pleasure
When it's only meant to kill the pain
Lay down my arms and take the coffin's measure
Or take up arms and send me out to fight again

Shaking hands...was I a coward, was I brave?
With shaking hands... I took the bitter pill
Tell the story on my grave, my soul they could not save
What the bullet would not kill, the needle will

Here are the lyrics to Codine, which Russ mentioned above:

Cod'ine
Buffy Sainte-Marie

My belly is a-cravin', I got a shakin' in my head,
I feel like I'm dying, and I wish I was dead.
If I live 'til tomorrow, that'll be a long time,
But I'll reel and I'll fall, and I'll rise on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

Well, when I was a young girl, I learned not to care
For whiskey, and from it I often did swear.
My mother and father said, "Whiskey's a curse."
But the fate of their baby was many times worse,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

Stay away from the cities; stay away from the town,
Stay away from the man pushin' codeine around,
Stay away from the stores where the remedy is fine,
For better your pain than be caught on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

You'll forget you're a woman, you'll forget about men,
Try it just once, and you'll try it again.
You'll forget about life, you'll forget about time,
And you'll live off your days as a slave to cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

But, if I die tomorrow, still one thing I've done,
I've heeded the warning that I got when I was young.
My one satisfaction, it comes when I think
That I'm livin' my life without bendin' to drink,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

And my belly is a-cravin'; I got a shakin' in my head,
I feel like I'm dying, and I wish I was dead.
If I live 'til tomorrow, that'll be a long time,
But I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll die on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

La Cucuracha (marijuana)

That rembetika song by Roza Eshkenazy about "preza" which seems to mean any intoxicant that takes the form of a white powder.

To make it a bit more difficult: what songs are there about psilocybe mushrooms, nitrous oxide, valium, glue or ketamine?

This is a powerful song about the downward spiral of alcohol
(among other issues). Simple tune but needs some punch in the singing of it. Encapsulates the humanity of the man, social issues/prejudice and the power of the grip of alcohol on him. Done by The Fureys I think.

                   Danny Farrell      Pete St. John

(D)I knew Danny Farrell when his football was a can
In his hand me downs and wellies and his sand (A7)wiches of bran
But (D)now that pavement peasant is a (G)full grown bitter (D)man
With all his (D)trials and troubles of his (A7)travelling people (D)clan

He's a (D)loser - a boozer - a me and you user
A (A7)raider - a trader - a people police hater
So (D)lonely and only - what you'd call a gurrier
(A7)Still now Danny Farrell - he's a (D)man

(D)I knew Danny Farrell when we joined the National School
He was lousy at the Gaelic - they called him (A7)Amadhan - a fool
But he was(D) brilliant in the toss school or trading (G)objects at the (D)pawn
By the (D)time he was an adult all his (A7)charming ways were (D)gone

And (D)I knew Danny Farrell when we cued up for the dole
And we tried to hide the loss of pride that eats (A7)away the soul
(D)Mending pots and kettles was a (G)trade lost to the (D)past
There's no (D)handout here for tinkers was the (A7)answer when he (D)asked

I (D)still know Danny Farrell - saw him just there yesterday
Drinking methylated spirits with some (A7)wino's down the quay
Sure he's (D)forty going on eighty with his (G)eyes of hope (D)bereft
And he (D)told me this for certain there's not (A7)many of us (D)left

From earlier Mudcat thread about the song, from Martin Ryan:
"gurrier" is Dublin slang for a worthless person or ruffian. Usually used of children.
"travelling people" is a term for for what, in Ireland, have been variouisly called gypsies, tinkers, itinerants and travellers.

"He was lousy at the Gaelic" - referring to the compulsory teaching of the Irish language in schools.

"He was brilliant in the toss school" refers to a gambling game involving tossing coins towards a wall!

"amadaun" is anglicised from an Irish word for "fool"

"Take a whiff on me" Loads of verses to choose from especially the telling "Cocaine's for horses not for men, they say it's gonna kill me but they don't say when"

Candyman is really about sex!!! Many sung versions have been bowdlerised to make them acceptable to mixed audiences to the point of making the version almost unintelligible,

judge for yourselves - here's a pretty close transcription of MJH's Candy Man. I don't see how you can miss what it's about.

Well all you ladies gather 'round
That good sweet candy man's in town
It's the candy man
It's the candy man

He likes a stick of candy just nine inch long1
He sells as fast a hog can chew his corn
It's the candy man...

All heard what sister Johnson said
She always takes a candy stick to bed

Don't stand close to the candy man
He'll leave a big candy stick in your hand

He sold some candy to sister Bad
The very next day she took all he had

If you try his candy, good friend of mine,
you sure will want it for a long long time

His stick candy don't melt away
It just gets better, so the ladies say

"Candy Man" isn't really about drugs

It's all about drugs, unless it's about sex.

It's definitely not about candy, I can tell you that.

Oh, man, where to begin . . .

Also by Gillian Welch:
"Tear My Stillhouse Down"

On Red Clay Ramblers & Fiddlin' Al McCandless:
"Wagon Yard" (novelty song, circa 1928)
"Tell It To Me" (variant of "Cocaine Blues", sort of)

Wayne Hancock
"Miller, Jack, & Mad Dog" (anti-drunk driving)

Other songs & tunes
"Down on the Old Plank Road" (Uncle Dave Macon, copied by the High Woods String Band)
"John Barleycorn" (morose Dm fiddle tune. Mine's on a Wayne Erbsen tape)
"Kneeling Drunkard's Plea" (Carter Sisters)
"The Fiddler's Drunk and the Fun's All Over" (aka "Billy in the Low Ground", C-major fiddle tune)
