There was a time when Ramblin' Jack was probably the best danged male performer in folk music, as can be ascertained from listening to some of his recordings. Great stuff. I wish I had seen him back then. Mind you, I wish I had seen Dylan play in the 60's too. Never did see him do a live show until '74.

Add my name to the list of congratulators.....yowie- 75 years old! One of my greatest folkie heroes. I saw and heard Jack at the Ash Grove and McCabes here in the city of LA many times- you were always in for a great treat, even if sometimes he spent more time telling stores than singing. He was just recently on "Prairie Home Companion", and Garrison asked why he hadn't written down all those stories in his life. Jack said he'd tried many times, but just couldn't seem to get started. Wish I could sit down with him and a tape recorder for a few months- I'd write it for him!

I heard him singing 'I belong to Glasgow' at a concert there a long time ago. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee were also on the show and we all ended up in Hamish Imlach's house for a great ceilidh. Morris Blythman, Dominic Behan, Josh MacRae, Nigel Denver and many more were all there. A memorable night.

RAMBLING JACK

IT WAS ON A THURSDAY NIGHT
AT THE "JUG O'PUNCH", THAT'S RIGHT,
A FOLK CLUB IN THE DAYS OF WAY BACK WHEN
I SAT ON THE SECOND ROW
LIKE I ALWAYS DID, YOU KNOW
READY TO SING CHORUSES AGAIN
THERE WERE SONGS ABOUT THE FARMER,
THE PLOUGHBOY AND THE SEA
SONGS I LOVED THAT DIDN'T REALLY MEAN A LOT TO ME
'CAUSE THERE WERE NO FARMS IN MY CITY
NO SAILS UPON MY LEA
AND NO PLOUGHBOYS IN THE FACTORIES BACK THEN

WHEN GUEST TIME CAME AT LAST
AND THE INTERVAL HAD PASSED
A VOICE SAID "WOULD YOU ALL PLEASE SETTLE DOWN.
'CAUSE ITS MY JOB TO SAY
LET'S WELCOME HERE TODAY
A LEGENDARY MAN OF GREAT RENOWN.
HE'S RAMBLED EVER HIGHWAY
HE'S RAMBLED EVERY ROAD
HE'S PLANTED AND HE'S GATHERED
HE'S REAPED AND HE HAS SOWED
HE'S A WANDERER, A TRAVELLER
A MAN OF NO ABODE."
AND THAT'S WHEN RAMBLING JACK RODE INTO TOWN

AND WHEN HE TOOK THAT FLATPICK OUT
AND HAMMERED ON THE STRINGS
SUDDENLY THE TUNES WERE TIGHT
ALL THE WORDS HAD WINGS
AND I WAS HEARING SONGS THAT TOLD ME
ALL MANKIND ARE KINGS
THE DAY THAT RAMBLING JACK RODE INTO TOWN

AND WHEN THAT NIGHT WAS THROUGH
I'D FOUND A LOVE SO TRUE
A FLAT PICK AND SIX STRINGS WERE ALL I'D NEED
THAT KEROUAC OF SONGS
THAT TOLD OF RIGHTS AND WRONGS
UNKNOWINGLY HAD PLANTED ONE MORE SEED
NOW I'VE RAMBLED DOWN THE ROAD OF TIME
AND THERE'S NO GOING BACK
BUT I HAVE PLANTED SEEDS OF SONG
SOMEWHERE ALONG MY TRACK
SO HERE'S TO ALL THE TROUBADOURS
AND HERE'S TO RAMBLING JACK
SAFE JOURNEYS AND SAFE HAVENS
AND GOD SPEED
YES, HERE'S TO ALL THE TROUBADOURS
HERE'S TO RAMBLING JACK
SAFE JOURNEYS AND SAFE HAVENS
AND GOD SPEED
JACK!

Long ago, an old friend had too much to drink. Problem was, when this fellow drank, he'd lay on the floor and ROLL from one side of the room to the other---back and forth, back and forth. Mr. Jack rolled the guy up in the rug and disappeared into the bedroom with the incapacitated guy's wife. It was one of the more amazing thing's I'd ever seen anybody do.

he was on prairie home companion when Garrison and crew broadcast from redding calif a few years ago...there was a rodeo happening at an adjoining facility.
He also appeared with Guy Clark recently.
I have heard the "ramblin'" is more a reference
to his spaeking than his travellin' though he
does a fair amount of both. CHECK OUT THE BIOGRAPYHY ON HIS PAGE
There has been a set of discs released recently (2004)
with recordings he made in the UK decades ago

Happy Birthday Ramblin' Jack. You may recall that Marie Damrom introduced us down at Kerrville this year - sorry we didn't get to do
a circle together. Heard your stint on Garrison's show and you must know that you are an inspiration to many. Stay well and give my best
to Marie(please tell her she has a CD coming).
Cheers,..........Michael William Harrison

Kris Kristofferson brought out Ramblin' Jack toward the end of his show last week, and they sang "If I Were A Carpenter" and "Muleskinner Blues" together. Yeee-heee-hooo!

Called Jack yesterday to wish him a Happy Birthday and talked to his road manager. He's in LA with his daughter celebrating. For anybody down in Southern Cal he's playing in the area this weekend.
Happy B'Day Jack, Long May You Wave.

Jeeze, 75 eh ?

I still have an old EP of his which includes "Good mornin' blues". I bought it at Cecil Sharpe House , Camden Town, back in the early 60s.
It is still GREAT!!!

Bought the Topic LP of Jack & Derroll Adams when it first came out, also 'Jack takes the Floor' which led me to Jesse Fuller, and made me realise I would never be able to play guitar like that!
I've got 6 years to go to catch you up, Jack, make sure you stay ahead of me!
Many more Happy Birthdays.
