And don't forget to sing 'Thirteen florins on the bar'Mick.
Looking forward to a great line up and Tims debut. Having witnessed his performances at the singaround at Brandy Wharf I am looking forward to his spot on Friday. The guy is good!
I guess the whole line up looks good eh? Best wishes, Mike.

The song is by Mike Sparks of Herga, based on The Crown pub at Hartest (which has rather more than 13 coins - of varied nature - nailed above the bar and on beams in the pub. There are, however, just 13 names on the WWI war memorial). The story was that they each nailed the coin on the bar for a drink when they returned. ("And every last man Jack, for a pint when he came back, Left a silver florin on the bar" in Mike's song).
Graeme Nights does a slighly different version.

THIRTEEN FLORINS (HARTEST 1915) Mike Sparks

Ch/    Thirteen florins on the bar,
       Their voices echo from afar.
No one ever said we'd change our golden fields for red
When we each left a florin on the bar.

The poppies have been laid,
The sermons have been made,
The bold November sun it sinks afar.
And we've bent our heads in prayer
For those we buried there,
Who left these thirteen florins on the bar.                Chorus

We'd sung the harvest hymn,
The nights were drawing in,
We could take a week or two, help win the war.
And every last man Jack,
For a drink when he got back,
Left a silver florin on the bar.

No one thought about the blood
Or the endless seas of mud
Or the sights and sounds that would minds and memories scar.
For when the fighting it was done,
And victory had been won,
It cost these thirteen florins on the bar.                Chorus

Now the decades have rolled past,
Of those who went, well I'm the last,
Their faces throught a haze of years are marred.
If we'd known then what I know now
We'd have stayed to speed the plough
Instead, here's thirteen florins on the bar.                Chorus

The poppies have been laid,
The sermons have been made,
The bold November sun it sinks afar.
And we've bent our heads in prayer
For those we buried there,
Who left these thirteen florins on the bar.                Chorus

Does that help Breezy?

Is there a link to listen to this song anywhere?

Villan and Sooz - Mr. Breeze is having a laugh with you! He knows Mike very well.

I'll see if I can sing this on Friday along with some other requests (but not half a Nelson for you, Mr. Breeze, you'll have to stay awake for all of it if I do it). Les did ask me if I could be entertaining(he's obviously seen me before) but I hold out little hope.

Mick

Shame others weren't at Brandy Wharf the other Saturday to hear that lady (sorry can't remember her name) do a lovely version of it, Sooz!
Looking forward to Friday...hope to see a good few of you there, I mean, what else could be better than chilling with a glass/bottle/can of something good, and live music?
Oh no...not another bbq? Pleeeeeeeeeeez! Bring your friends/acquaintances/bloke you don't know from the end of your road/hot dog/veggie burger along...Hey Villan, maybe you could set up a barbie area in the carpark for the break?!!!
What about having a reward points system for those who attend regularly...? It is easy to sit at home and watch tv but...come on down to THE HAPPENING PLACE in Lincolnshire!    :-)
PS Isn't it quiet on here without Twangy? lol!

I will be up front Breezy, becuase I will be MC'ing and I have this magical hook that yanks people offstage if they don't behave. Not had to use it yet, but there is always the first time.

You are right Rockhen, it is quite with the twanglers away.

Where have all the twanglers gone
Long time passing
Where have all the twanglers gone
Long time ago
Where have all the twanglers gone
Gone to Staithes to have some fun

No Mike.

Andrew T..thanks for doing the Clifford T Ward song...you were great. Gwenda and Terry performed brilliantly both in their spot and on the PA and Mick...Well what can we say about Mick Pearce....Top notch and thanks for doing 'Thirteen Florins' Mick.
Thoroughly enjoyed tonight.

great set by him

GS...no, sniff sniff...I never got any of the chocolate... I was gutted! :-(
We had some potato-head-low-fat-tiny-packet-wouldn't-feed-a-flea crisps and a bottle of diet coke... what a feast!

Villan, no, my accordion doesn't usually do that. I think it may have been a gremlin, elsewhere but it is always difficult to pinpoint that sort of thing. I wished I had unplugged earlier because I begin to play really cautiously and tried to stand really still in case moving about made it worse. Is the downside of having a PA, great when all is well but can be distracting when you are performing if there is a problem. I thought G & T did a good job with the sound in spite of my accordion hiccups. It is no mean feat sorting so many different acts out in one night, plus a lot of work.

It was a nice evening but perhaps the heating could be turned off, now, Villan, it was very cosy...!

Maybe there was a thunder head at a distance over the land?
MCp thanks for that kind comment re MC bit was bit weird to do for first time but with the classy performers and audience not as bad as could have been.
I must try not to be so easily distracted when trying to play though.
But what normal man could keep his mind on higher things when the lovely Gwenda is at his feet fiddling with his wttsit?

No, she is not a relation, lol! She bought her piano, which is the same as mine, after hearing and seeing mine at Market Rasen Club, I think.
She has a lovely voice. I always enjoyed hearing her but she doesn't seem to play much at MRFC now. Shame. Was nice when her and John B played together, too.
I love the piano and wish there were more 'proper' ones that were fit to be played at places. It galls me at local acoustic nights in Grimsby, that I am not allowed to take my piano as it is eeeek ...electric...even though it can sound very similar to an acoustic piano.
I'd love to wheel a baby grand into some of these nights and see the reaction of some of the people who tutted and said i shouldn't take it, :-)

Helen, thanks for the vote of confidence in Jane and me! :-)

GS is correct - we've both been going through a fairly horrible patch of ill-health. Jane's treatment is on-going and seems to be succeeding, and I'm in hospital this coming Thursday for surgery which will keep me house-bound for around six weeks.

You're right, Jane's a very talented musician and singer, it's an honour and a pleasure to work with her and I'm missing it very much. We keep in close touch and we WILL be back together as soon as our current problems are sorted.

And thanks to everyone who has wished both of us well, both on the 'Cat and otherwise - it's very much appreciated.

Twangy, I thought you knew...Dave was one of the people who said no to the ELECTRIC piano...his pub, his choice I guess.

Sorry to hear about Jane's ill health, Strollin' best wishes to you and her, for a good and speedy return to good health.

I tried the piano at Faldingworth and although it wasn't awful, it wasn't that perfectly in tune, unfortunately. I far prefer to play a 'real' piano but most in places like that, are not that brilliant because of the changes in temperature affecting them. Fine if I am playing for a singaround type of informal bit of fun but not quite right for piano ballads.
