Sorry folks but by that time the earth will be almost too hot to support life and the few people that are left will be living underground at the poles, getting limited water from desalination plants, which use what is left of the sea to make drinking water, and run the hydroponicums.

It may be assumed, probably safely, that appropriate calendar corrections will be applied by the appropriate time-keepers so that no corrections for said changes in day and year length should be required.

Dumbass Bee-Dub failed to check the arithmetic and point out that 27 posts accounts for only 26 intervals between posts, so the first division was incorrect, producing an error of 3.846% - an intentional trap to see if the arithmetically illiterate would fall for it.

(But the Bee wasn't really the one I expected to have to point it out to.)

Well, that's true as far as it goes, but we can only reckon on, say, 5 years lifetime for a drive. By which time the price should have fallen to something like one-eighth of its previous cost. We have to keep on doing this for the first 251000 years, so we have a total cost of something like

1000*(1 + 1/8 + 1/64 + 1/256 + ......) for the first 251000 years, and then we have two drives to worry about....

But of course, that's only the hardware cost. We also need to add in an allowance for Max's time to copy all the data about at some hourly rate to be decided. This of course is higher each time he copies it, and is something like 20% higher that then previous time.

The total estimate cost is left as an exercise to the reader.

19,646 characters for the first 41 posts = 479.17 characters per post average.

85*10⁹ posts at 479.17 characters per post = 40,729.45*10⁹ characters, or 40.7*10¹² bytes. (<41 TB)

While this implies 41 1 TB drives for storage, an article in 2002 that fairly accurately predicted the 1 TB drive should arrive "about now" also predicts that we will have 120 TB drives by around the year 2012. As it's doubtful that the first 1 TB can be filled prior to that time, advances in available hardware should allow the purchase of only one additional hard drive by the time it's needed, and we should have lots of room left over.

(Of course, we'll need a backup drive for this valuable information.)

From the same article, the 28 million volumes at the US Library of Congress are estimated, in plain text files, as sufficent to fill one fifth of a 120 TB drive, so the "one third of a drive" needed for this thread won't be all that large.

And of course, if we have to use the 2012 version of Windows to run the drive, the OS may use the rest of it.

I spent three weeks in Blind River one night, so, thou who was there at the beginning man, I am not he. I have no such pretensions. BDiBR is one of Canada's coolest citizens. Shane has the corner on the illegal booze market in Blind River, Ontario. Well, he did until he drank the profits with some ladies of the evening. He spends lotsa time in jail through no fault of his own, and I think he was an astronaut one time years ago, but that may have been after he smoked a few doobies and it could be a story he made up to impress the Earth-bound. Hadrian's Wall was good KB, though it rained a fair bit. Took 2 days of walking from Wall's End to find the first bit of wall however (excluding the museum at the start). It was quite funny to see how much of the wall could be found in the surrounding buildings. Just wish now I had focussed more on the wall and its history and less time thinking about how this thread was doing (e.g. "If only this thread could have been started in Roman times."..... " I wonder how many times around the earth 85 billion miles of wall would go?"... etc, etc). Still I doubt the wall will be around for as long as this thread and perhaps one day people will be taking a journey back to the origin of it and wondering how we lived? Exciting .

It is with great regret that I have to inform fellow posters on this thread ('specially the 100ers) it is my firm belief that this thread is now dead in the water. For a few heady days back in June it seemed as though we were at the start of something big. A radical young prophet by the name of Blind DRunk in Blind River gave a coded message that showed a few people (why so few?) a glimpse of eternity. Yes we were young. Yes we were foolish. But we wanted to make a difference (with Tee shirts and everything), but it wasn't to be. I for one can't continue with the hurt as each day passes with no more posts keeping us on track with our one billion goal. I'm not sure of the intentions of the other 'followers', but I for one am signing off a near (but not totally) broken man. You will never again see a post from 'good old' I was there at the beginning man, on this or any other thread.

Perhaps one day, however, in a few years time, you will read another post that will cause you to ask, "Could that person be...?. No surely not?... But is sounds a bit like him, though the name is different?..." ... It might be comrades, it might be.

Perhaps it would be of more benefit to examine the reasons why threads like this are deliberately scorned and ignored by those members of this forum who regard themselves as more important than other people who may not have been here as long, but who nevertheless should have a right to say their piece in an equal fashion, and not be discriminated against in subtle ways or subjected to what can only be termed a torrent of abuse. Personal insults are tolerated when they are issued by the aforementioned people, but excoriated when they are issued by the latter. Perhaps we should all take a good look at what is actually happening and ask ourselves if this sort of behaviour is conducive to maintaining a healthy community of if it is not?

I discovered this book at the library of the Catholic elementary school I went to around 1973. Yep, apparently the nun in charge of buying books was browsing the bestseller list and assumed from the title that it was a childrens' book. Ha haaaaw!! Rick D. and I checked it out in turns and loved it. Of course its content was soon discovered and it was removed from the library (no doubt incinerated), but Rick and I did a joint order (heh heh) to Pocket Books and got each of ourselves a copy. I haven't laid eyes on this title for nearly twenty years, but I can still quote it at length. Like the part that warns you not to get *too* good at rolling joints, because you'll end up sitting in the corner rolling your stupid joints while everyone is going down to the lake for skinny dipping. Or the intro, where the authors say they don't smoke grass and never have, everything in the book is based on what their friend "Ernie Lundquist" told them. Or that nothing is bad when you're stoned, except getting arrested, and even *that's* a learning experience. Or that the results of using a "steamboat" (their term for a big glass waterless bong) would make "even the mighty Zeus shake his head in disbelief." Or referring to the things you will do stoned and not get bored or feel silly, like picking lint off your dog or watching The Flying Nun. I actually think of this book often, after all this time. Highly recommended, even if you've never had a puff in your life (which is, looking back on the effects grass had on my life, my recommendation).

She was missing the litter box when she whizzed. I got to thinking and decided that a litter box doesn't need to have been designed as such so I got one of those big plastic storage containers. The thing is 12 inches high. Well, for a few weeks it worked like a charm. Her pee would hit the side and run down into the litter. Lately though, she has been pissing over the top of even this thing. At least the box is in the (unfinished) basement. It's still a pain to have to clean it up.

Ah, but the paged version uses about 64 bytes for each link to each page. A page is (I think) 50 posts. That means that the 'index' of pages at the top of the pages for this thread will be far bigger than the pages themselves. How long each page will take to load is left as an exercise for the reader.

The bogossity meter was running over at MOAB--just walking into the room talking without lurking to see what is being said then joining in smoothly is problematic--even in a BS joint--checking to see what the thread is doing first is all that is required over there. We haven't required new posters to read the whole thing for ages. Now just reading the last 1000 posts will do a pretty good job of bringing you up to speed.

Heh! That's exactly what the MOABS is. Over time the MOABS thread devolved into a tiny little private club of about 6 or 7 people who drop in on a regular basis simply because it has become habitual for them to do so. The only thing that relieves their narcissisistic, nattering, nabobistic nepotism is the occasional visit from William Shatner!

Dare we hope that this thread may become something similar...yet much more democratic and far less elitist...a thread for ALL, not just for some! Let that be our watchword, our inspiration, our credo, and our sacred mission. KB we held out the hand of friendship, but the hand was refused, nay shunned. Our crime, not understanding the thread's conventions.
