I heard the Makem Brothers singing a great Civil War song about the Fighting Tigers of Ireland. Does anyone know this song? Have the lyrics? The only line I remember is:

They were Irish born they were heroes all
and they fought for Loweezian

Fighting Tigers of Ireland was written by Jed Marum. There are lyrics on his homepage for most of his songs.

Best wishes,

Bente

Jed wrote and recorded this song originally on his "Streets of Fall River" CD. This CD is one of my favorites, even though I was involved in a very small way on two subsequent CD's. Jed is a rare talent when it comes to storytelling in song, and this CD told us all that he would be a force in historical songwriting. I haven't heard the Makem Brothers version, but it will have to be very good to match Jed's telling of the story of the 6th Louisiana.

Check out the website above. You won't be sorry.

All the best,

Mick

Hi Mick
The Makem Bros. do a real nice job on this. This type of song is probably what they do best. They sing it with their friends the Spain Bros.(Mickey & Liam) who they've played with off & on for quite some time now(you like them too) & now perform on stage with most of the time now. A real nice one by Jed.

Copied from Jed Marum's web site (or Google's cache of it):

THE FIGHTING TIGERS OF IRELAND
© 2000 Jed Marum

Let me tell you a tale of those brave Irish boys
Of the Sixth Louisian'.
From New Orleans to Richmond and back again,
They fought and died for all Dixieland.

Led by young Henry Strong, who at Sharpsburg fell.
He was proud and Irish born;
And then bold Colonel Billy Monaghan
Gave his life at Shepardstown.

CHORUS: They Irish born, they were heroes all,
And they fought for Louisian',
From New Orleans to Richmond and back again,
The fighting Tigers of Ireland.

Now when old Billy Monaghan sounded the call
Back in eighteen sixty-one,
Every Irish lad joined him one and all,
To keep those Yankees back in Washington. CHORUS

At Port Republic and Bristoe and Fredricksburg,
Many valiant and good men gone,
They showed honor and courage at Gettysburg,
Reached the gates of Washington.

They followed Jackson and Early and Master Lee,
And the fiercest in all the land.
On this old Marshall Robert and Grant agreed
Were the men of the Sixth Louisian'.

[As recorded by Jed Marum on "Fighting Tigers of Ireland: A US Civil War Collection." CD Baby has a generous sound sample.]

Hey - thanks folks! I haven't heard the Makem/Spain Bros do this yet, but I hope to soon. They asked me for the MP3 and lyrics some time ago after we played the North Texas Irish Festival together. We'll both be playing in Louisiana this Fall, so maybe I'll get to hear 'em sing it. That would be a thrill.

Looks like I need to get my lyrics pages back on-line. My son does the website and we've been rearranging things - so I guess the lyrics got left behind.

Thanks again ya'll!

I just saw the Festival's schedule and I'm playing right between the Dady Brothers and the Makems for both shows on Saturday - so I am sure to see them.
