Been 12 hours since this year's Stuper Bowl-kinda boring game, some bad calls, but I spose the Steelers deserved the win. But does America/U.K./the world still "deserve" the Stones? Thought their "show" was lousy...did anyone else hear Mick singing "I Twy, I twy" during "Satisfaction"? Sound engineers musta been getting beers and dogs at halftime; horrid balance...swear I've heard garage bands pull off that material better than "Keef and the boys." Didn't Keef die...musta not told him.

"Start Me Up" wore its welcome out when Bill Gates took it for Windows 95. Mick is what? 65? I mean, I give 'em credit for strutting their roud selves, but as a band goes, they bite. Can't believe folks'll pay $120. or more a tic to see them anymore. 'Course we got Arrowsmith on this side of the pond, but I actually see/hear a qualitative diff with them. Best line of the night? Mick saying "we couldda done this one at the first Super Bowl" then sliding into Satisfaction.

Watcha think? Time for her Majesty's fav bad boys to hang it up? Or doncha much care? When has a band outlived itself? Hey-I guess it's not a buncha replacements, but maybe it wouldda been better it it was.

I dunno. I don't go around strutting on stage anymore. Aging Rockers seem to me to be in the same class as aging stockbrokers (or any other job). Growing old gracefully has always seemed preferable to me.

And it can't be that the Stones need the money!

I don't need to see Engelbert Humperdink or Tom Jones. However, there are plenty of grannies out there who want to see them. I do not want to tell anyone who they should pay out money to go and see. If you like them you go. If you don't like them, you stay in. It does not bother me if Michael Jackson squeaks away for another half century. No one will force me to go.

I think that the reason they still do it is because without being "The Stones", what else have they got. I prefer to listen to the music as they did it when I was young.

I have to agree. It was a painful experience listening to them.
They can still announce a Tour though and fill the seats and Stadiums so my taste meter might be wayyy off on this one.
It all sounded so jaded to me, especially 'Satisfaction', but then how long can you do a Song and make it sound fresh!

"...but then how long can you do a Song and make it sound fresh!"--Hey, Jude (good song title) apparently about 40+ years...or more.

Good point about people paying to see what they want. I don't mean to come off sounding like I'm trying to dictate taste. Guess I just wasn't very impressed. As for Michael Jackson squeaking another 50 years--I wish he'd take his "Jesus juice," and pedophiliac self and go into exile on some island...but, hey--that's jest me!

Just an aside Anonny Mouse, did you notice certain words being edited from two of the Songs as Jagger sang them?
Didn't want another scandal this Year at the Bowl I suppose:)

Lets send all old people to a home so we won't have to look at them anymore. It is obvious that anyone over the age of 50 has no value anymore and they should no longer be heard from. It would also free up a lot of unnecessary posts on Mudcat.

I understand that there was a 5 second delay so that certain words could be (and were) edited out before they invaded the purity of American homes. We certainly wouldn't want our kids to hear at home what they hear in the streets and at school now, would we?

There's an objective answer to the question.

When they can't get anyone to pay to see them or hear them, they should quit. Until then, why should they? No one who thinks they're making fools of themselves has to watch.

I think their performance is funny looking. But I thought it was funny looking when they (and I) were 25. So there's no difference.

Peter.

They're MUCH better than lots of kiddie bands I've heard. And some people pay $1,000+-a-plate to have dinner with politicians ... why would someone on this forum seriously suggest any musician 'hang it up?'

I didn't watch the Superbowl--but I have never watched the Stones on TV and thought their power and charisma came across very well. May they Rock On!

Never did care for them ... so it really doesn't matter to me.

With that being said, why should they 'hang it up' ... should also Ellis McDaniels (Bo Diddly), Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry.

Well, I enjoyed it. I hope that I can still have that much energy when I am in my sixties. Keith still has the funk that he had in his twenties. It's funny, I was watching Ronnie Wood thinking that he is the "new" guitarist in the Stones. He's been the new guy for over thirty years. I was also wondering how he and Keith made it through three songs without a smoke.

Leave them be. They have earned the right to be called legends.

I hope none of you, like myself ever feel too old to pick up a guitar and do it because you can.

Maybe when Mick is out there pushing a walker around the stage he might think about retiring. Up till then, if they're still kicking and selling tickets, why not perform?

I mean, they may be older than my dad, but it's nice to see old guys still being active in Rock & Roll. Only wish they'd develop a bit more. All their stuff sounds the same now.

Loud, ugly, out of balance...Mick skipping and prancing like some grotesque school-boy gnome...Keith chuckling and lurching around the stage...Charlie looking like a math teacher playing drums on Saturday night at the Elks Lodge...Ronnie preening and vogue-ing like the oldest rooster in the hen-yard. I loved it! Rock on, ye olde bastards! May you be just as loud, ugly, and out of balance in 2020 as you were last night and in 1965.

Alba--no, didn't notice stuff was bleeped out...but did hear about it after the fact.

Now that I've ruminated on this a bit, I am ready to waffle...you're right: why should someone on a musicians forum ask a musician to hang it up? I guess I was just disappointed in the quality of the performance (or lack thereof). I guess when I'm 60 something I'd consider myself lucky to strut around like that--heck, I'm not 60 and I can't do it now. LOL. Gotta agree-they earned the right to be legends.

The rhythm section was tight. Charlie and Darryl are great! Keith looks surreal as usual, and somehow keeps within the beat most of the time. What bothers me is Mick's vocals are more spoken than sung.

I predicted the tunes right, but would rather have heard Sympathy For The Devil and Gimme Shelter.

Peace, Mooh.

I didn't see it, but I heard on the news that they had words bleeped out. My first thought was - us ole rockers are still out there doin' it!

Talkin' 'bout my generation (sounds like a good name for a song ;-)), as someone who grew up with The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Manfred Mann, The Animals, The Who, and others - we were something special, the children of the sixties - we were rebels big-time! The Beatles might have been every mothers' favourite, but The Stones were the ones they loved to hate, and we loved them! We may never see their like again.

I started to read Lonesome EJ's post and was thinking - that's the sort of thing they used to say about them in the sixties - nothing's changed. Then I saw that was his point. Good post LEJ!

It doesn't surprise me at all that they are still out there being themselves - that's what our generation was like! Sometimes I have looked at the generation after us and thought how straightlaced they are by comparison - anyone else feel that?

So keep on struttin', li'l red roosters, and keep layin' them golden eggs!

Jenny

I don't think they should throw in the towel unless they want to.... but I did think they sounded alot like a bad Stones cover band.

The UK needs the colonist's dollars. Given the current tax rate poor old Mick will work till he dies to support the none working class in Hull alone.

Glad to see people coming to their senses.

The Stones still put on a helluva show. Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional. I hope they continue to show us that we can still rock - and not in a rocking chair.   Luv em!

I read this thread first then I saw the performance.

Difficult to see many other bands putting on a better show or creating such an atmosphere from scratch in just a few numbers.

I obviously didn't see the show, being in the UK, but I agree that they should probably jack it in. I heard their latest album last night (listening to a friend's copy), and frankly it's shite. It's bland, inoffensive rubbish, played not particularly well.

If they can summon up their old energy for touring and singing the old songs, then fine. But they should certainly stop releasing new CDs until they actually write something worth listening to.

Graham.
