Hey folks,

This may be old news to some, but the Mrs. Freightdawg and I just caught this on tv last night. It is called "A Song's Best Friend: John Denver" and was produced in 2004. It is narrated in part, interestingly enough, by a recording of JD himself as he explains a lot of his thoughts about his music. By the tone of his voice I would say the audio tape was quite old, but very interesting to JD lovers.

The special also had a lot of comments from Denver associates: Milt Okun, Lee Holdridge, Pete Huttlinger, John Sommers, and several wonderful memories from Annie Denver. Just to hear Annie talk about John was worth the show itself. There is also a ton of vintage film clips with John - one with John and Johnny Cash singing "Take Me Home Country Roads", several of John at Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado, a couple from Australia and many of his television specials throughout the years here in the states. There is also one with John, Bill and Taffy Danoff singing "Take Me Home Country Roads". For those of us who have never seen Bill and Taffy that was a real treat - and great singers too. It was fascinating to see John age through the film clips - from the style of his glasses to the change in tone of his voice. As he aged it moved from a very reedy and nasally tone to a very mellow and softer tone.

If you are a JD fan you will want to catch this - I am sure it will be rerun ad nauseum in the future. This show was really good stuff!

Freightdawg

Thanks for the review! Our local PBS affiliate had their pledge drive a couple of weeks ago so I probably missed it this go round, but I'll keep an eye out for it next time.

Okay, it took me half of the afternoon to dredge this review up. Just saw where the special will be replayed this p.m. (12 Oct. 2006) at 6:30 mountain standard time.

For anyone who is a JD fan you do not want to miss it. For fans of the seventies and eighties you will want to tune in for some really good interviews, etc. Especially poignant are some reminices by Annie Denver.

Hope some of you can catch it when it swings around your PBS station.

My dearest Michaelr:

It is not only all right, it is mandatory!

(at least at our house it is!)

SRS, check you pm box. I'm too embarrassed to respond here.

I discovered John Denver in the summer of 1973, through a coworker. His songs seemed to fit our environment particularly well (working for the Forest Service in the Cascade Mountains).

There have been interesting threads about Denver here at Mudcat (see links above). I think history will view him favorably as someone who tried to use his music and influence to make things better.

JD was one of the few 'popular' artists i was allowed to listen to growing up. his concert was the very first i ever went to. i still love listening to him. Calypso has always been one of my very favorite pieces - and it still makes me homesick everytime i hear it.

Freightdawg--I watched that special last week here in San Diego. The music of John Denver is very special to me. That is the music I was listening to when I was a young woman & thought big thoughts & ideas about the future. That man & his song "Lady" brought me more guitar students than anyone could imagine--back then, I guess I was the only one in the SW part of Oklahoma who not only taught fingerstyle, but had the wild notion that my students should be able to play the music they enjoyed. When he sang, I thought that he cared about the same things I did. I was very sad when he passed.

Speaking of JD and Huttlinger - Here in the UK a little birdie JACKIE FREEMAN [first.feet@btopenworld.com] tells me ..........

Our First concert is John Permenter from the usa. Hes a singer and fiddle player. Plus Country duo Frontier. thats on the 18th March. Some tickets left but selling fast. £10.00 each

July FRi 14th & Sat. 15th. The John Denver Tribute nights. This time my husband Ray is singing the songs of John and we have behind the scenes finally got 2 more of Johns original band coming as well as the fabulous Pete Huttlinger. Tickets are not yet printed for these concerts but ive got people sending me cheques from all over the country to reserve their tickets. And tickets are £20.00 each because of high cost of more of John Denvers Band from usa. This is going to be really something.

On the 15th Sept. We have Tom Russell & Andrew Harding. From USA. Not to be missed. ticket prices not confimed yet.

On the 23rd Sept we have Joni Harms.with her 5 piece band. This one took some getting. Huge Country & Western star in America. Amazing voice. Saw & Met Joni at the country music festival last summer and we struck up friendship and keep in regular touch. Thousands were there to see her. Dont miss this one. Ticket prices not confimed yet.
Kind Regards
Jackie
