Featured on the RTE archive Programme "Come west along the road" was a former contributor to Mudcat, Bonnie Shaljean, Bonnie and Packy Manus Byrne playing "Eamon a cnoc" Ned of the hills. From a 1979 "Humours of Donnybrook" Programme.

Bonnie if you are still out there, well played, you and old Packy were very good,Packy still living in Donegal aged 88 was a regular in the 1950s and 60s in various folk clubs in England.

I never met Bonnie, but knew and loved Packy in those far off fun days when London and environs had dozens of great Folk Clubs. Last time I remember meeting him was at a club in a church hall in Bayswater, and we shared a drink in the pub just across the way.
I was in Donegal last February, if only I'd known.

John, Nicholas Carolan who introduces the Programme told how he had met Packy at McBrides folk singing week in Inishowen, he also said that Packy was from the Killybegs area in Donegal.

Ard,

Bonnie is still here and posts from time to time.

I remember a splendid night of music and chat with Packie in Ardara many years ago. He was a real gentleman as well as a great player.

Peace

moo

Packie still rates in my book as one of the nicest men on the folk scene . A wonderful story teller and superb whistle player , many are the beers I have supped with great pleasure in his company .

It is good to know Boonie is still entertaining the folk and Packy is still batting and heading towards his century.

One of my favourite, and earliest, LPs was their disc "The Half Door", and I agree they were a lovely duo. It still gets a periodic spin.

Never forgotten first seeing them at Folk Union One, where we had only expected Packie, but got both, there's value for you.

I agree Terry...Packy is an absolute darling!! Used to be a Sidmouth regular until he became a bit frail. He judged the "Sidmouth singer of the year" a couple of times...I still remember what he said to me when I entered but I'm not going to repeat it here!

Love Lynne

Saw him many years ago and with Bonnie was that a portable organ they had too or are the grey cells getting dimmed

Lovely whistle player and storyteller ~ seem to think he was the younger family member and lagged behind a bit ~ made up for it beautifully with real Irish charm!

I type this as I listen to George Bests funeral !

I saw Packie and Bonnie when they played the Topic in Bradford, when it was at the Star in Westgate, one of the most memorable folk club nights ever.

Yep, I'm still very much here, though late getting to this thread. It was a real shock seeing us on TV - I'd tuned in to Come West for a quiet evening at home. Thanks so much on behalf of both of us for all the nice words -

All the best to everyone –

Bonnie
