"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, "The 700 Club."

"And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there," he said.

"The 700 Club claims a daily audience of around one million. It is also broadcast around the world translated into more than 70 languages."

Huh?

Don, if you knew how many times I have looked at your artwork you'd know the esteem I hold for you. I don't know how to say in words what your art does--I just know it does. I am so taken by the art in "Cliff Diving" and the poem that goes with it that it has inspired a piece of writing (with music) from me. It's a song. I carry that picture in my head, as I do so much of your work. There are very few people on Earth I want to meet, but you are on the short list of four or five.

Cliff Diving by Don Hakman.

I think maybe you don't know just how brilliant you are. But, by God, I do. I could go on here with many pieces you've done, lauding so, so many of them. Tell you how much they have meant to my view of life and whatever I can figure out of this universe. History has given the world some folks who actually change the way reality seems. I think you are one of those people. I know it's unlikely we will ever meet, but maybe that isn't even necessary. What you put in visionable work is what someday I hope to capture with words.

BM

And, how can we get Don's work a wider audience?

People will believe in just about anything and many are more than willing to try and get you to believe in their way. Some do it for money while others hold a firm belief. When I married my Protesant wife I was bound for hell. And others said it wouldn't last. That was 34 years ago.
But the point I want to make is this. A thread ( Catholic Bishop and Priest Scandal)in April of 2002 had a reply by a mudcatter by the name of Rick M. In his response he stated the following. " Don't Give Any Other Human The Right to Dictate Your Spirit Path". I'm sure Rick M if you read this you won't mind me quoting you. In all my years of confusion, RickM made it so clear to me.

'sanctimonious' doesn't even quite describe it. I think the man has a serious case of grandiosity. I think he is deluded. I think he is meanspirited and vengeful. I think he is dishonest and consiously, deliberately deceptive. My guess is that at night he sleeps with the light on.

I will never forget what I saw on the '700 Club' one day. I was taking care of an elderly woman and she had the television on.

On it Robertson had a guest who was making the preposterous claim that the color pink is deleterious and disabling to men. He demonstrated the fact to Robertson.

First he had PR show that he could easily hold his arm rigid when the guest tugged on it. Then Guest laid a pink cloth on PR's arm and said, OK now don't let me bend it.

Pat Robertson strained mightily and guess what- he couldn't.

The next time I saw my very conservative, faith-filled, Pat Robertson-following Christian brother in law, I asked him to hold his arm rigid and demonstrate that I couldn't bend it. Then I laid a pink pillowcase on his arm and said, OK NOW bend it, and I held on.

He looked at me quizzically but he bent it. No problem.

These t.v. evangelists have been around since the inception of t.v. Trouble is, the population has increased and so has the audience. These people pray, alright. They prey upon shut ins, invalids and couch potatoes. I actually think they should be outlawed but they realized a long time ago that you could get away with anything as long as you cloaked it in religion.

What irks me is the tv stations which carry his show accept it for pay, i.e. it is essentially a paid commercial announcement. It'd be better if it was kept to the religious channels, but then anyone without cable wouldn't be able to get it. I hate that it is shown every day on the station for which my husband works; it's a corporate decision to accept the money and run it. In this conservative, church-ridden area it gets big ratings.

He is also the same self-righteous-direct-pipeline-to-God-his-Goon who called for the assasination of Chavez of VZ, and blamed a hurricane in FL on the "godlessness" of the people. I think I remember him blaming 9-11 on that, too, making it partially the sinful city of New York's fault, too.

The best thing I can get out of this is karmic payback is going to be a real bitch for him and it couldn't come a moment too soon, imo.

katfeministwhodidnotdivorcemyhusbandkillmychildrennorgolesbain, so...he is a lousy predictor all the way round!

Oh, no they ain't; not half far enough. Look more closely... at Kansas, say, & coming soon to a location near you:

From story on Latest AP Poll:" Just over four in 10 say the administration has high ethical standards and that Bush is honest. Whites, Southerners and white evangelicals were most likely to believe Bush is honest..."I know he is a man of integrity and strong faith," said Fran Blaney, a Republican and an evangelical who lives near Hartford, Conn. "I've read that he prays every morning asking for God's guidance."

I'm all for the idea of "intelligent design", since I think that everything that comes into being does so through intelligence. I think atomic structures are intelligent. I think energy is intelligent. I think the whole Universe is an aftereffect of intelligence expressing itself, not a result of some kind of accident or unthinking process. I never thought of it as a justification for espousing the fundamentalist Christian religious view, though. ;-)

Study Taoism or Buddhism instead. They are far more enlightening in terms of articulating intelligent design. They do not even propose a "God" who is somehow seen as separate from his creation (which he cannot be, by definition!)..they propose a unified reality that is itself the very function and working OF intelligence. It's innately intelligent, and that intelligence can be seen reflected in both the microcosm (subatomic particles) and the macrocosm (the whole ball of wax). This does not require a human-like God figure to run it like some big Kahuna.

Accordingly, I think Pat Robertson is talking horse puckey! (to use DougR's old phrase)

"completely without political influence." MarkS

The problem is that that isn't so. There are tons of people out there who follow him and the others (oral roberts, jerry falwell, etc) who have tremendous power. Who do you think votes for dubya? And whose anger makes many politicians shake in their boots?

Didn't the voters of Dover, PA voted out the school board on the grounds of "Intelligent Design?" It now seems to me that "Intelligent Design" is more equivalent to (gasp) "Creationism." I thought "Intelligent Design" had more to do with omnipotent beings placing humans here on the planet known as Earth (I digress to a science fiction definition which seems to be IMHO what extreme environmentalists say indirectly).

I have always thought that Pat Robertson was 2 enchiladas short of a combination plate (or any other metaphor you can think of). Assasinating world leaders is one thing, but bombing a government agency? That is new to me. And now this condemnation of the town of Dover, what will it take for the people (and Mr. Robertson's parishioners) to see "the emporer has no clothes?" Any thoughts on this?

If you are waiting for "The Rapture", you live with lotsa hope that the world will end. Religion a la Pat Robertson appeals to people who do not think for themselves. Read some of his comments when he gives advice to people over their personal problems. He quotes from "The Book". Does so very convincingly, if ya believe a literal interpretation. The followers of Robertson are basically fairly stupid. Hell, his personal worth is estimated at over $200,000,000. Only thing I can think is that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. But, hey, I only read "The Book" 3 1/2 times, so what do I know? He presents his followers with a velcro presentation of biblical things--that 'velour on a background' stuff that Sunday schools use to begin the indoctrination. Robertson and that TV evangelist crew control millions of votes. Hell, wasn't Billy Graham a friend to many Presidents? Ain't far from that to having influence. And having billions of dollars at your disposal gives ya lots of influence in this world. IMO.

Nah, Paul Burke. God--who invented grandchildren, pecan trees, Berneice Reagon/Sweet Honey In The Rock, ripe avocados and tastebuds--is obviously putting all Its energy into spreading joy, health, peace.
Robertson is seriously mistaken. There's a prayer in the (Episcopal) 1928 prayer book that addresses Almighty God, "...who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live..."
I see so many wonderful people who struggle with the human tendency to anger/bitterness/fear, and its concommittent(sp?) energy toward revenge/vindictiveness. They know, first, that ACTING out those feelings is wrong. They attempt to use the energy to work toward being more reasonable and just themselves, to teach others how to live in greater health and peace with their neighbors, to find ways to protect the most vulnerable from harm--and they pray to God(see 1st parag. this post) to help them understand the evil and avoid it. They want to contribute to the flow of love and well-being where they are. Pat Robertson seems not to be following that path. He seems more interested in the politics of power and viciousness. "...Rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live..."               Tw

Pat Robertson is not the worst problem...he DOES have his lunatic followers, but it is folks like Tim LaHaye & Jerry Jenkins who wrote the "Left Behind" series that worry me. Have you seen them? They are nice, friendly, well-spoken regular fellows...who just happen to espouse a pretty scary viewpoint. They are getting to the ones who wouldn't listen to Pat R. alone.

Since it is considered so 'unseemly' (and often downright dangerous)to directly criticize anyone's religious views, even in a political campaign where your opponent is using religion to herd voters into his corral, I have a hard time seeing how to even have the debate on a level playing field!

Hmmm. Well, there's no doubt that American politicians all feel they must pay lip service to organized religion...or face the wrath of numerous voters...so they all do it to some extent.

You'd like politics in Canada better, Bill. Canadian politicians virtually never bring religion into their public debating. It would be considered kind of tacky to do so, I think.

I don't think the Federal Government would play that game as yet. Then again???? Lets hope not. They don't need religion anyway, they have enough shit hitting the fan as it is.

Turns out he was in the hospital and it was his night nurse... anyone know where I read it?

Pat Robertson is just exercising his First Amendment rights in this country. It's up to the listeners to engage their cerebral matter and suss out for themselves what Pat is trying to say. It isn't Pat's fault if listeners blindly accept whatever drivel pops into his disillusioned brain.

Robertson's agenda is political, not religious. He is symbolic of the moneychangers that Jesus threw out of the synagogue. His politics and his religion are all about money.

I welcome the opportunity for him and those of his ilk to get the chance to broadcast their message across the airwaves - otherwise people like us would probably neither know what people like him are thinking, nor would we get the chance to examine the rationality of his thought processes. It is an educational experience, and keeps me from becoming too insular. Besides, his show 700 Club show is always good for a laugh. Pat Robertson is a joke, a well heeled joke. God does have a sense of humor.
