Well, the vote is nearly upon us, how do you think the Government will fare in this very important vote?

While we're at it, what do you think of the 90 day rule?

To set my stall:

I think Tony will scrape it.

I think the rule stinks as it seems to hark back to bad old days of internment without trial, and that didn't work.

I'm thinking the Govt. will lose by about 20 votes. You're right. It does stink.

Stigweed, I think you will be the correct in both cases.

90 days is ridiculous. If they can't find incriminating evidence within the current limits with all the resources of current technology then there probably isn't any to be found.

They will make all sorts of promises to get the weak- kneed Labour backbenchers to vote for it.

They will then break all those promises. Like they did over ASBOs.

The police will use the powers to intern people on suspicion (or even just to spite them), and release the vast majority, uncharged, on the 90th day, just as they release the vast majority, uncharged, on the 14th day now.

Once the law is in place, even with a sunset clause, it will never be removed.

I think it should be introduced with a disclaimer that it should be reviewed after one year. If mistake after mistake are made it can be revoked. If intelligence is to be gathered globally, I can see why we need the extra time, not all countries we may need information from are as technically up to date as our own.

Unusual times need unusual policies.

I'm sure it'll be a huge consolation to anyone banged up for three months without being convicted of anything, that the policy could be reviewed after a year.

"If intelligence is to be gathered globally, I can see why we need the extra time"

Good point but, as we know, why the hell should we put faith in the capabilities of any of our government agancies ability to gather and intepret intelligence? It was that failing that is in part responsible for us being in this situation now.

No, it was wrong in the past and it's wrong now, unless your intention is to alienate young people and drive them into the arms of fanatics.

They've actually voted to DOUBLE the detention period, so while 28 is better than 90 days, it's still an increase in repressive legislation.

The important thing is that this vote will hasten the departure of Blair , who is personally responsible for our involvment in Iraq and the any increased terrorist threat to the UK.

Oldest negotiating trick in the world - ask for a lot more than you actually expect to get.

If in 28 days they can't come up with enough evidence against someone that they may have done something with which thet can be charged, and held longer, it's a pretty strong indication they haven't done anything much.

"I can't tell you all the facts I know that require that you do what I am asking you to do - but you can trust me..." - well Tony couldn't really expect to get away with that again, even with a bunch of lickspittle MPs.

The police and the prosecution service say they need 90 days.
The politicians are sure that they know better than the people with all the knowledge and experience.
Politicians have an awful record for making wrong decisions.
I do not feel any safer tonight.
Keith.

Please enlighten me...what is the inducement for PM Blair to reason after losing this vote.

Is it loss of face

Loss of the ability to convince

Isn't this merely one vote?

I think it can be said with some degree of confidence that those people who want to see an increase in terrorist activity - I mean the strategists and planners - will be really pissed off at the loss of the "90 days" which would have done so much to help them.
