Maybe I'm just weird, but I understand you, jpk. My first wife was constantly telling that "people" (variant on "they" were saying all sorts of ugly stuff about me. It finally became something to joke about and when she'd mae some damning statement about what "they" thought about me, I'd say in my most serious radio newscaster voice, "According to a recent nationwide poll, 78% of theys think that Jerry Rasmussen is an egotistical moron." She didn't appreciate it much, as it eventually destroyed her mythical pronouncements. But my sons sure loved it...

Maybe even 79% of "people" would have enjoyed it..

Jerry

I know what you mean, jpk. You are talking about what I call "third-personism". Let's say A is arguing with B. A claims that C, D, and E agree with A. However, C,D, and E aren't there, so B cannot check the situation out.

Oftentimes C,D or E is the boss, so there's an element of fear.

I used to belong to a folk group with one board member who absolutely had to have her own way all the time. She claimed constantly that members came up to her and gave her feedback which supported her views. Funny, that rarely happened to the rest of us. Finally somebody said "Give us some names!" and that form of third-personism stopped.

Jerry, you have my sympathy. It must have been hard to be told that people were gossiping about you. I'm glad that's over.

There is no "they" there, as me mum used to say.

And attributing nasty thoughts to a "they" is about as good a way to bust up a communication as I can think of. Makes it awful hard to understand what's being said because you get so dizzy trying to find who this critical "they" is.

A

"They" are the ubiquitous sources of information on Fox News that prevent any lawsuits for presenting rumors as truth, by starting any dubious story with, "They say that...."

"They" are the voices. They tell me lots of things. Sometimes they argue. One told me to go to the Dauphin and help him become king but Chirac found out and kept me out of France by hiding the fortune I got from that nice man in Nigeria. Another told me not to eat yellow snow. And another told me to vote for George W. Bush. The voices are nice.

"They" say those niggling little voices are often your mother's. However, because she had her own voices "What will the neighbors say?" - I don't know "who" told her.

No, these are different voices. The voice of my mother used to say things like

"Don't you DARE light that in here!"
"People in hell want ice water."
"You're making WHAT in the basement?"
"Go play outside."
"I told you that would happen!"
"We'll see."
"Absolutely NOT!!"
"Don't even think it."
"Pick up your clothes."
"Now go reset the circuit breaker."
"WHY are you in the Emergency Room?"
"Oh no you're not!"
"Not until your homework is done."
"Chocolate cake. Why?"
"Whatever it is you're doing, stop it!"

And my all-time favorite, "I don't want to see nothing but a**holes and elbows out there." Oh, wait, that was my Basic Training Platoon Sergeant. Ooops.

Wasn't "They" one of Van Morrison's early bands ? And didn't "They" open for "The Who" ?

I saw a quote in a paper in the UK that encapsulates this and the concept of an "Irishism" perfectly!! it was an Irish woman in London talking about the "troubles" in Northern Ireland
"They say its not as bad as they say it is"

"It's just not done" is a genteel English way of telling someone not to do something that they are already doing.

That early band of Van Morrison's was Them. Who could forget "Gloria" and "Baby Please Don't Go"? That was a part of the 60's that I do remember.

Wasn't there a movie called 'Them'? There was a big boom in pronoun based movies in the 70s. 'It' and 'Them', anyway. Then there wasn't the southern one called 'Y'all' and the one about the hermaphrodite alien at the root of all that pronoun abuse by non-commital PC writers: 'S/he'. 'They' are to average people as 'Men in Black' are to conspiracy theorists. Or maybe they're the same people. Then again, maybe there's not any significant difference.

Do you want to meet ALL of they or just ONE of them?

The former might take a bit of time but they can probably arrange the latter quite swiftly.
