I'm being verified at the moment. My problem was the 4 digit number they gave me 4 years ago, which I haven't used since, moved house and lost... you can guess the story. They'll give me the number when I'm verified, but, to be verified I have to put in the 4 digit number... After about a million e mails I wrote to them in capital letters saying they were ignoring my question and answering everything but. The upshot is, I'm now waiting for those 2 amounts to go into my bank account.   I too, am going to arrange payment from my credit card not my bank account as I, too, want the added protection it gives. I have been using them for 4 years with no trouble but when you have got to your limit you have to become verified. So, the moral of this is, don't lose your 4 digit number.

I knew a lady pub pianist who said she always used a discreet one when when she was gigging. it was the only thing that kept her smiling through two hours of Roll Out the barrel....

Today I got a fraudulent Email telling me I had purchased a virbrator (would never do that - my wife said they and not worth a) for $1000.

I knew is was fake and passed details to Paypal asking them to confirm. The reply was received within two minute. Ok could be an automated service but it's still excellent. Never had any problem with Paypal but sympathise with anyone who has. I presume they will take the same initial stance as most banks i.e. We do not make mistakes and even if we do then it is your fault for not checking your account!!!!

I have recently had my first problem with PayPal after I changed my account to a Business Account, so I could receive payments for translation work. Up until then I had no problems buying stuff via eBay and from other sites.

Then someone tried to pay me an advance for an assignment, and tilt. The transaction could not be processed. Reverted to electronic fund transfer between banks.
At the same time I was trying to buy something for my son's birthday from a site where I regularly use PayPal. Whammo - transaction could not be completed.

Called Paypal by telephone - sorry, they said, seems to be a glitch with your recent change to Business account, we'll look into it. In the meantime they would revert my account to a Payment only account. I asked for an e-mail to advise me as soon as the problem had been resolved (bug fixed!). Paid for my son's birthday present successfully using PayPal.

Three days later received an e-mail advising me that problem was still being investigated, and to get back to them in two-weeks' time. I e-mailed them back asking if I could work around their bug by opening a new account.

I'm still waiting for a reply!

Seems they are not too keen for paying customers to use their facilities to be paid, even though they charge a fee!

MMario and Clinton, It's from Paypal o.k. I spoke to them by phone. They stopped my account because I had made 4,500 over four years and they said they have to stop the account and get me to register again to ensure I am not involved in money cleaning, lets be real 4,500 over 4 years is not exactly the big time ! I went through the process through their site, every time I tried to enter the information it just read, INFORMATION HELD PLEASE TELEPHONE US. When I did they went through the same crap again. Now they said they will deposit two small amounts under 30 pence into my account and I have to tell them what the amounts are by phoning my bank. That was eight days ago and still they have not deposited. They are posting out a number which I have to enter. I am so pissed off with it all. I note a lot praise Paypal, so did I for four years, await your turn my friends. Thanks for the interest guys.

Just an update. Eight days after I spoke by phone to Paypal the two small deposits they said they would deposit into my bank account are still not there. I have phoned every other day, still no luck. They will not answer emails either. I am getting very pissed off with these assholes. If only there had an office where you could get to them, then again maybe that's why they don't. Micky mouse operation. By the way I have been with them for years without problems, but when they do come they really sicken you.

like most people I use paypal cos IT IS CONVENIENT. hOwever I do have sympathy with you curator. I think all these institutions that aren't actually on the high street, they don't have look you in the eyes with daft demands and arbitrary decisisions. I thought the Co-op bank, which many I know feel to be the very model of ethical banking - well just a little bit too unaccountable when I used them - so of course I stopped.

I think it reminds me a bit of when microwave ovens first came out. I went around insisting they were crap, because they couldn't do eggs without the bleeders exploding. Then somebody explained to me gently - they're not crap Alan - you've just hit on something they can't do.

Paypal does what it does, banks do what they do - I think that's probably the root of the situation.

I notice a lot of posts from Catters who I recognise as being American saying they have no problem with Paypal. Go back to the start, the problem is with a UK paypal account. As somebody posted above the problem is UK law not Paypal.

See this discussion relating to exactly the same "problem" experienced by a customer of one of Paypal's rivals.

Curator - an economy BOOMS when the money churns.

Unfortunately, you chose to be a miser and hoard your gain.

The levied inconvenience is due and just - you are working in essentially a barter system of economics.

The only problem I'm finding now with PayPal is that I decided to confirm a couple of settings and had to do that two deposits into your bank account routine to get there. I prefer that PayPal charge the purchase to a VISA card, because you DO have recourse when you purchase with a credit card that you don't when it's from your bank account. It's also a buffer from my regular accounts. But with the confirmation of the accounts, it has set itself up by default to take the money from my checking account. I have to go in and tell it where to take the money from each time. It's a nuisance.

Other than that, PayPal seems to work fine. I wouldn't touch it for many years, but after eBay bought them and straightened the company out I've heard nothing but good about them.

The restriction is a legal requirement under anti money laundering regulations. You would have had exactly the same problem using Nochex or the now defunct Natwest Fastpay.

Look at bulletin boards about epayment services rather than folk music and you will find lots of people in the same boat.

When I first started using paypal I had to use a credit card. There was a monthly limit on this and to change to unlimited I had to put it through my bank account even though I would have preferred to continue using the credit card. I also had to go through a security arrangement involving deposits in my account and this took about ten days. It was all done on the secure site and I have had no problems since. I would have liked more choice in the method of payment though.

PayPal is EXCELLENT, the best way of trading money with someone instantly over the internet.
i have been able with paypal to buy dvds, cds, etc from america, jamaica, germany, etc, that you simply CAN NOT buy in the UK.

Paypal has without a doubt made my life better. also if you use it in conjunction with eBay it is excellent as you get a receipt by email saying how much you have given someone or what they have given you, therefore if you are ripped off on ebay (very unlikely) you can prove you are right.

i think its good theyre making you verify yourself by putting the amounts in. when i first joined, they put 2 small amounts in my account too. and i will admit, they pissed me off, because they took about 4 weeks for me, but now i am on, i can forgive them

as for why are they doing this to you, well, maybe you selected a personal acccount instead of a business account - the business account is unlimited.

the title of this message is false advertising and slander because youre not happy with them, maybe they will see this thread and sue you!

im sure youll agree this is better than having some hacker steal all your money and bank details

Your legal rights to sue regular banks are pretty restricted too.

and the buyer submitted a check to paypal, which reported to my friend that the check had cleared. But in fact the check was bogus, and paypal after crediting the amount deducted it

Again - standard banking procedure.

After using it a few times, I decided to use my credit card instead since I purchase, rather than sell. To this day, there are sites I cannot buy from because PayPal detects my card number (which they weren't supposed to retain) and blocks the transaction unless I use their services. Twice I called customer service to have the account killed. No joy. I don't like PayPal.

As a buyer on E-Bay, I've used PayPal with no trouble, and have every confidence.

Like almost all reputable organisations they never send E-Mails asking for personal info. These E-Mails are a certain scam, and I delete without reading.

PayPal do have a verification procedure involving deposit and checkback as described, so if that came from the secure section of the website it is genuine, IMHO.

I reckon you are right in expecting to access your own money more quickly than this tho'.

Paypal will contact you only, I believe, on the Ebay website when you access your account.

I recently rcvd and e mail and sent it on to Ebay. They thanked me and told me it was a scam to get at my account---which,frankly, I have not used except one time and one time only for a 5.00 dollar purchase.

No problems here either. But there are lots of fake eBay and PayPal emails going around. They look very convincing and make it sound like your account is going to be suspended unless you immediately provide all your banking information at a website to which a link is provided.
