Anyone ? If so , whereabouts are you? Or does anyone know of anyone?
I'm gripped with enthusiasm for the HG and building an ultra-basic one in my shed....

The only one I know around my area is Jon loomes who will be coming to play at my Folk Club soon (Market Rasen Folk Club, Faldingworth, Lincs UK).

However I did see somebody in a Ceilidh Band last week playing Hurdy Gurdy. The band is Pierrot I think from the Gainsborough area.

Ned Ludd has one, and plays it often. He lives in Yorkshire.

I was wrong. It's Jerry Oakes not Pete Barnard. He lives near Gainsborough.

Hi Eleanor

Be sure to get to Audlem Bagpipe & Hurdy-gurdy Day" later in the year. It's a wonderful day.

Audlem's a long way from my home patch, so I don't know any of the players who turn up. But I think Greg Stephens does. (He's in the thread I linked to.) Send him a PM and he should be able to put you in touch with some of them. And they'll all be beating a path to your shed faster than if you'd invented a better mousetrap.

I play the Symphonia - a smaller earlier version with 3 strings. Try searching for some previous posts/threads here using that word.

I got one from Ramblin' Conrads in Norfolk, Virginia. Like the sound, but couldn't figure out how to set it up to get it any good volume. One year when we were play the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Ontario, someone expressed an interest in buying the the hurdy gurdy from me. Since I wasn't actively playing it, I decided to give it to him. Now I can check and see how he's doing with it.

I'd love to have a full Hurdy Gurdy, but nowadays I will have to wait till I win a big lottery, or some rich generous person dies and leaves one to me.

Hint: hurry up, i'm not all that young myself... :-Þ

Mine was hand built from scratch by a retired instrument maker.

I meant a guy who makes instruments (for measuring, not music) for a living - sort of a fitter and turner machinist.

Gerry Oakes of 'Pierrot' (and late of 'The Stubblejumpers') has a beauty (now now! keep it clean!) and plays it wonderfully. He's based in the Gainsborough, Lincolnshire area.

Come to the Over the Water Hurdy-Gurdy Festival in September. Lots of fun, lots of hurdy-gurdys, great teachers, beautiful setting, good food.

This page shows how to build a simple hurdy-gurdy. I have always wanted to try this.

Gosh I return to my thread and find it full of wonderful suggestions and information. Thanks to each & every one of you. I'm probably on the wrong side of the pond for the Over the Water festival (I'm near London, UK) and there's no mention that Audlem is happening this year, though that doesn't mean it won't.
The dhavlena site was my starting point for my basic HG ( or Uglatron, as my mate Chris has christened it.) I MEAN basic - it's housed in the body of a terribe junk shop guitar - sawing off the guitar's neck was FUN.
I will keep my eyes open for Pierrot and HG related spots at Market Rasen.
As for the picture of lots of HG players, thank you, that's my idea of a good time. It's not a cheap instrument - I tried to guess the price of the hardware on parade in that photo!!!

The's a fair few H-G's around Oxford (UK)
which isn't too far from you.
One french sesson (2ndTue) I think we had 4 in the Chester Arms!
& the's gennerally in the /2 moon most Sunday night - providing the matchwood threats continue ;)
Wednessday nigh Ian's HG drew quite a crowd of interested 'Normal' people at a new session at The Vicky Arms. The'll soon learn *ggl*

Why confine yourself to other hurdy-gurdy players? It seems to me that one hurdy-gurdy in a group is all one would ever want. Why not look for other players of early instruments, such as recorder, harp, or various members of the mandolin group (mandolin, bouzouki, fiddle)?

They would probably be thicker on the ground.

Audlem's likely to be the first or second Saturday in November I think. I'll send you details when I get them Eleanor. Here are a few pix from Audlem two years ago.
