I am fed up with Grumpy Old Men. I am sick of the lot of them - their constant whingeing, finger pointing, their raised voice, interrupting other people who are talking, and their refusal to take responsibility for their grumpy moods.

Well I'm sick of them. Grumpies, get a life. Do something meaningful:buy a pet, take up tap-dancing, learn to knit - that will give you something to be grumpy about.

Madame Lafarge.

Researchers found that men who were socially isolated had raised levels of a blood chemical linked to heart disease. The cell signalling protein, interleukin-6 (IL-6), is known to promote the inflammation that helps artery walls to thicken and harden. This can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Scientists in the US studied 3267 men, with an average age of 62, who underwent physical examinations and answered a series of questions about their social lives. They were asked if they were single or married, how many friends and relatives they knew whom they could confide in and the extent of their participation in group activities and religious meetings or services.

The men were then assigned a social network score of one to four. Isolated men were at the bottom of the scale, and those who were highly connected at the top. The researchers found that the average level of IL-6 in the blood of men with a score of one was 3.85 picograms per millilitre. Men with a social network score of four had a level of 3.52 picograms. "This was a statistically significant difference," said the research's leader, Dr Eric Loucks, from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

"Our analyses suggest that it may be good for the heart to be connected. In general, it seems to be good for health to have close friends and family, to be connected to community groups or religious organisations, and to have a close partner."

The researchers said the same link was not found for women.

I think it is a fine rant on a narrowly-defined subject. I don't see how anyone can fairly assume, from the post, that this person is anti-male. Just anti-abuse.

As a wee little child, I had a particular affection for a couple of notoriously grumpy old men. I found that when I learned to communicate a bit with them, they had some valuable, and valued, things to say. Of course the kids in my "peer group" thought I was a "little odd" for taking the time to deal with them, and the old grumpies probably thought I was a little strange too - but I got quite a lot from them.

Now that I've reached the age to be one of them, I understand even better how difficult it can be to deal with whiny snot-nosed, self-centered little beggars who think they're the center of the universe and that nobody else matters: - and there seem to be a lot more of them around recently.

I've also noted that the ones most likely then to fault their elders have turned into the grumpiest of old men (and women) now.

I'm concerned that Cranky Young Woman's angry and patronizing rhetoric reflects her own agist biases, her statement of principles hides an agenda that at least many young women hold to, an agenda that really is dark. Older men already know that they are subject to exclusion and discrimination. I see Cranky Young Woman trivialising the feelings of older men. I find that to be more than a little disingenuous.

I'm going to keep working towards dialogue, but it's beginning to look to me as if dialogue through the institutional structure of this thread would be a waste of time because the common ground I thought we shared on welcoming all people to Mudcat --whether they're "looking for 'music'" or not--doesn't seem to be there.

GUEST,Martha Gummet, I would agree that

the common ground I thought we shared on welcoming all people to Mudcat --whether they're "looking for 'music'" or not--doesn't seem to be there.

It has disappeared under a barrage of judgmental defensiveness where whatever one posts is immediately taken as an opportuity to feel either morally superior or victimized, and to let fly from a soapboax that precludes "dialogue."

This makes a fine example of that new model of Mudcat: I see Cranky Young Woman trivialising the feelings of older men. I find that to be more than a little disingenuous.

Perhaps your pre-existing perspective makes it hard to see her post from another view. Older men already know that they are subject to exclusion and discrimination. Yes, they do know this and they are treated this way, and I agree ity is wrong and hurtful.

I also know quite a few older men who are reaping the seeds of poor relationship they have sown, who have brought "exclusion" upon themselves as their own actions drove caring people away. For example, I know MANY caregivers who labor on despite an increased rate and degree of abuse. Once in awhile, you know what-- they need to VENT. And all caregiver support professionals urge them to have a safe place where they can do just that.

What is my own pre-existing view? Well, about 20 years ago I started a movement called Allies of Men. We quite actively (and effectively) protested male-bashing. We focused on mutually respectful relationships between ourselves and men, and did not engage in telling men how they "ought" to treat women. But we didn't sit around and encourage bad behavior, either, and once in a great while, we VENTED in a safe place and then got right back to those relationships.

It was amazing to me that when I did some respite cargiving for my paw in law, he was really nice to me. "What did you DO?" I treated him with respect and I smilingly told him to knock it off when he didn't, and left the room till I could resume my own friendly cheer. Guess what-- he was perfectly capable of being quite nice, and thanked me for interrupting his bad habit. I occasionally ranted and vented in a safe place-- away from him-- to maintain my detachment and high expectations.

Mudcat isn't really a safe place, though, for any kind of rant, as most ranters have seen. The group dynamic and environment's design here does not allow it.

I strongly believe that one doesn't need to enable bad behavior in order to prevent men's isolation-- they are completely capable of forming and maintaining lifelong, close relationships THEMSELVES. Our community is full of them.

~Susan

Good for you, cranky young woman - you go girl! And very well said, Susan.

I'm sick of the ones who are always looking for a fight, and take everything personally.

Hey guys (those to whom this applies), believe it or not, it's not always about you, and no, you are not always right. Occasionally, someone else might have something of value to say, and letting them say it won't turn you into a weakling.

Far from it - a man who is sure enough of himself to listen and learn as well as having his own opinions is one who is worthy of respect.

Ahhhhhhhh! Rant over. That felt good!!

Thank you for your comments, Susan. Yes, I've noticed the atmosphere here. I think dialogue is paramount to any understanding - and that co-operation is more powerful than confrontation. While I understand that some men have brought isolation upon themselves, I believe that with communication and understanding, any person can be assisted back into a community.

Charlene, I am not male identified, but I believe that a functioning family unit is at the heart of social health, and that a woman's role is to work to keep that family happy and whole.

Your lesson, Susan, with your father-in-law, is a good one.

with thanks

Martha G.

Brucie, like many men you seem to believe that other people want to hear about your nuts. This genital focus is a symptom of grumpium narcissism - i ask you to put to one side your testicular obsessions, and do something for humanity - take a course in bean sprouting. This will both satisfy your subliminal desires, and teach you a culinary skill that is good for the ecology and good for your inner health.

SINSULL,

I miss them so. They were the pets I never had in my youth. And then, all of a sudden, there I was, infested with pets. Thousands of them. No longer did my widowed parents have to tie chicken around my neck so the dog and cat would play with me. There they were. Crabs. They loved me just because I was me. Thank you for bringing back fond memories.

I will depart this thread now. GUEST, Cranky young woman: Thank you for this thread. Sincerely. I don't want to hang around because it is beginning to feel like it ain't gonna be too much fun real soon. But you brought a bunch of smiles to my face and I certainly thank you for that.

When folks have to go to a proctologist to find their sense of humour, then they should go. If I offended anyone on this thread because you feel I am a MCP--well, in the parlance, tough shit.

Have a good day everyone. Except the one or two to whom the above remark might apply.

I live with a grumpy old man and love it. He engenders so much entertainment every day and it's great fun winding him up occasionally.

He also has a number of friends of the same ilk - I just don't take them at all seriously and we all get on well. It's great fun anticipating the reaction to any given situation that might arise.

Brucie - condolences on the loss of all your pets, I feel for you. Keep on posting mate - I for one look forward to reading your stuff.
