In McAlpines Fusilers and other songs about construction the term " Shuttering Jams" is mentioned. What does this term mean. I have never had the misfortune of working for McAlpine , Lang or others.

shuttering jambs:
"Each 60 tonne concrete door is cast in-situ on a steel bogey using the door jambs for shuttering the concrete, thereby matching the door to its jamb..."

and here:
"Shuttering:
Planking used, for example, to keep wet plaster in position until dry.
Jamb:
Side of doorway, window, fireplace, etc."

Interesting question. That's something I never knew and never thought to ask.

I figured it was a Brit thing and never bothered to ask. Makes sense to when you learn about it, too.

I heard it as unshuttering jams...is that a possibility? Like taking the forms off the concrete? mg

It seems to me that "unshuttered jambs" would be a much better lyric, because it would (could?) mean that the doors were leaking water over the Fusiliers working there.

Man, such detail. I never listened that closely.

Jams may also be slang for the vertical structural members of framework used to support concrete forms until the crete is cured. Shuttering jams might be jams which vibrate during the concrete pour.

I have heard the term also used in place of "dogs". Dogs are triangle shaped pins used to hold walers in place on formwork and falsework. They are set in a slot of flatbar which protrudes from the form and pounded (jammed) as tight as possible. Same vibration can happen during a pour.

A very eerie feeling comes over you when you see and hear any of this... concrete kills.

Same thing when trenching and tunneling, especially when groundwater begins to flow into the excavation.
