Subject: BS: Excessive Posting-The Cure?
From: Charley Noble
Date: 24 Feb 05 - 09:50 AM

One of my friends commented that I had posted more than 5000 times on Mudcat and implied that this was excessive. I may indeed need counseling. However, I'm not even sure what kind of specialist I should be approaching. There appear to be other Mudcat members who share this problem, and perhaps they would be willing to share the insights they have gained from their experience.

The question raised up thread about the number of memebers is impossble to answer accurately.

But if you choose the option to Send a Message to a Member from your personal page and leave the subsequent selection box blank and press "Go:" a list of possible names to PM to appears. Discounting the ones marked "test" there are 12,696 names in the list.

However, thousands are probably one-time use, lookie-loos, and other kinds of nixies.

I've got an official count of 14,477. However, I must have several thousand more under various bizarre psuedonyms. Some of them are well-known by now. I deliberately "outed" my authorship of Blind DRunk in Blind River, for example...and then there's Chongo Chimp.

But I am not Martin Gibson.

Gnu, you really know how to hurt someone. How can you possibly say that I don't exist? I'm a living, breathing person just like everyon else. Is my lack of a name any different than those of you who make up names and people don't really know who you are. Does Martin Gibson exist? That's as much his name as Guest is mine. Has anyone ever met him? Perhaps I am him and he is me and you are the walrus or the eggman or whatever.

What's the difference in logging in under a fake name or not logging in while using a fake name? Either way, you have no idea who I really am. If I was a member who gave the name John Smith what more would you really know about me? Would my replies make me smarter or make me seem more knowledgeable just because I used the name John Smith instead of Guest? Many great pieces of music were written by Anon. Are they less great because there is not a name attached to them? Why does the simple act of registering my name make me any better than being a Guest? Unless there is some snobism attached to membership, I just don't understand what makes an anonymous member different from an anonymous non-member.

The One and Only Real Guest

Guest:

You often appear in the guise of someone of intelligence, but ths is clearly one of your many feints and dodges, because the answer to your question is obvious.

If you insist on communicating as legion, you are enforcing a not-there-ness on those who try to read what you are saying. You leave out the most critical notion inherent in communication, because you collapse your identitiy with an unbounded set -- I mean, the viewpoint one always adds tot he text when reading a post.

You may not ever meet Jerrry Rasmussen or Big Mick, but yopu know their point of view, and you are pretty certain about who they are even when you don't have a legal identity. There's a constancty of voice and framework which makes a cyber-correspondent "knowable" even though his identity may be legally a fiction.

But with you, well, you could be anyone. Talking to you means you could be a thousand points of view, your context slips through the mind like a wet and whining wind, you build your relationships on dust.

One effect of this phenomenon is that you impress people as being very afraid, whether you are or not, because it is so similar to the "viewpoint" opf someone in fear, leapingfrom place to place, trying to find a safe way to be.

That's what's the difference.

I can be taken to task when I fuck up. I do sometimes. I'm human. You are not. You are a post. Not posts, A post. I've posted a shitload of times and people know me. They know gnu. They don't know you. Because you are only A post. I am not saying the post has no merit, just you.

I still don't understand it. If I register under the name "Guest" and keep posting just the way that I am posting now then I am more credible because you think that you know me even if you don't. On top of that, I can be taken to task when I "fuck up". Can't that be done now? Assuming I give false information, that can still be pointed out.

How well do you really know ayone with an alias. In the real world Martin Gibson can be the nicest person on the face of the earth (highly unlikely but possible)but here he is usually a fool. Which is the real person? Can you really say that you know him?

Why does membership give more merit to the poster than non-membership?The person is still knowledgeable if he or she can post a knowledgeable message.

It really does sound like there is some sort of snobism prevelant here. It's like a fraternity. If you don't belong to us we have no use for you no matter who you are or what you say. Some really nice/good/qualified people just don't like to join a group for whatever reason they personally might have. It may have nothing at all to do with being afraid...just a personal preference.

Perhaps you should look at things with an open mind and be more accepting of those who have something to say whether they have registered their false name or not. I still don't feel that the act of becoming a member changes me or the messages that I leave.

guest - I don't give a damn whether you belong to mudcat or not. what I do care about is *NOT* having to talk to a faceless, voiceless non-entity hidden behind a wall when there are countless numbers of other faceless, voiceless non-entities also talking from behind the wall. I'd like to have a tag of some sort to be able to address.

Hell - even LH's made up characters post consistently when he posts under their names.

it's not that you are more credible if you post under a consistent handle - it's that those who read your posts are able to discern which posts are "you" - and thus more likely to able to extract the information you are trying to convey.

It is the uniqueness, which is a part of the truth, that you destroy with your obsessive anonymity.

It's the difference between "I" and everyone, between "Cobb's Mill" and "everywhere", or between "a letter from Tom Stallworthy" and "somebody called, I dunno who it was though..." or trying to listen to soeone who says "everybody knows that....".

The reason just saying Guest doesn't work is because it is automatically assigned to non-members, and it means there is no uniqueness.

All true communication is between unique points of view.

So you appear suspect from the outset even though you are sure you have done nothing to warrant suspicion. You're unwilling to stand up for an "I" even one as safe as a fictitious but consistent I. You insist on using a formless generality, as though you were a Cosmic Voice or too scared to show yourself even that much.

Gnu,

It shows just how little you really gnow. I posted both messages that you attirbute to Guest 1 and Guest 2. The second one was a response to what you assumed was fully answered. I cannot accept your answer because I don't agree with it. I would think that we have the right to respectfully disagree even though I have not registered under an alias. Since it seems that most people's minds are made up that a Guest is a despicable animal who does not belong on the face of the earth I will now close out my part of this discussion. I don't believe in wasting my time debating closed-minded people. That is not meant to be in insult to you. It is just a statement of fact regarding this subject.

On occasion I've regretted not tracing a couple of old posts that I had difficulty finding again. With our new DSL connection it now seemed possible, and in fact fairly reasonable, just to archive all the threads to which I've posted, so that I could have them all in one folder for quickly searching out my gems of wisdom when needed.

As I'm a relative newcomer, with the first post using my current identity on 15-Jul-01 - 09:25 PM, what seemed reasonable for me would, obviously, be rather a massive task for a few of our olden-timers.

My current tally, according to the search, is a paltry 7,962 posts in roughly 6 years. Having completed my archive, I find that I've posted to a mere 3,280 threads that, as .mht "web archive" files comprise about 513 MB.

Some, like Amos who has 39,157 posts, would find it a much more difficult thing to accomplish. Of course, if we had a "nonsense filter" he could apply that and only need to archive about 37 threads; but that probably requires an additional development of mudcat capabilities. By the time that gets done he might be up to a less manageable 40 or 50 threads after filtering. (He's been here a lot longer than I have.)

Posts for catspaw39 are at a relatively modest 23,147, but I seem to recall that there may have been a change of moniker some while back, so his actual personal total may be significantly more than that. It's fairly obvious that the nonsense filter would do little to reduce his archiving task, as there is very rarely anything but polite, concise, and erudite content in anything he posts.

Joe Offer shows a paltry 19,696 posts, but as his contain no (non)sense at all the filter wouldn't be much help. There's also the question of whether "edit posts" are included in the search, so his actual busyness on the site may be much more than indicated.

Recognizing that running quickly through opening a whole archive (opening lots of threads in quick succession) would perhaps burden mudcat's bandwidth, I did my best to do the archiving only when traffic seemed at a low ebb, and generally worked through about a "page" or two of the search results at any one session. As a result of this, it did take a few weeks to work through all threads to which I've posted.

Once the basic archiving was done, when I open a thread after posting to verify that all went well, (something that of course everyone does) it's fairly quick to archive that thread, or "thread segment," to keep the record current. (If opening a 50-post part of a thread it is necessary to add a "page number" to the save title, since otherwise the last page will overwrite previous ones.)

Reviewing my results, I do find perhaps a dozen or so of my own posts worth saving; but I was having trouble finding a couple of them since I couldn't recall the thread names correctly. I've also found that a few that I remembered as being "very good" actually weren't all that great. But nostalgia has a certain appeal.

As it's been a couple of years since this thread dropped out of sight, perhaps – in the absence of much intelligent discourse recently – a fresh round of comparing notes and a bit of new bragging is in order.

Maybe there's a new weiner.

John

Good point. What we really need is a software routine that records the total number of words that each poster has posted! Or even the total number of letters IN the words! That way people like Amos and myself who use a lot of great big fancy words like "sesquipedalian" and "exegisis" would get the credit we truly deserve.

Note to JohnInKansas:

When a member changes his/her Mudcat name, that name-change exetnds to all archived posts, which are re-labeled with the new name. So, a name change would not result in a reduction of the number of posts in history ~ only in the reattributino of that entire history to the newly changed name.

I learned this accidentally, reading a resurrected thread in which various participants voiced complaints about Martin Gibson's interjections. I didn't see a single post labeled "Martin Gibson" in the whole thread, but when I read a little closer, it was obvious that many posts characteristic of our old friend MG were in there, but all of them posted under the name "Once Famous." I then saw that Once Famous had a long history af many posts. Most of them, one assumes, orignally appeared under that earlier infamous name, but all had been reassigned to the new name.

That brings up a new, related question: who has had the most posts deleted? MG/OF is an obvious candidate, but not the only one

PoppaGator -

When a member changes his/her Mudcat name, that name-change exetnds to all archived posts, which are re-labeled with the new name

That's the preferred method. Actually, you - the member - are just a number. If you request that the name displayed be changed, using the same member number, then all the posts will show as if made under the new name, since it's the member number that's the "key" looked up to find what name to use. (At least it looks that way in the page code.)

You could, however, create an entirely new member identity that would have a new member number and associated new name, if you use a new email address and "fake the details" for other things asked. This is a practice generally frowned upon by the management, but could be done accidentally or deliberately.

In the past, the login page (Sign In) also had a button to "Sign Up" and a few people hit the wrong button when they tried to log in after a cookie crumbled, causing all sorts of confusion. I believe the "New Member" button has been moved elsewhere to avoid "inadvertent multiple personality syndrome" when people just wanted a new cookie but got confused. Most "inadvertent new identities" have been "fixed" by mudelves, but the incantations and potions required to do that are unknown on the real earth (by we "real human beans").

It might be considered necessary to have an entirely new identity (a new member number and new name), for example in a "stalking" case. In this case, posts under the old name would remain, and only new posts would be under the new name and new identity number.

The latter case is a bit like the government's "witness protection" setup(?). It provides little protection to change the name unless you change the entire "identity," if the purpose is avoiding someone/something threatening/stalking you.

After sufficient time, when a threat appears diminished, mudelves could - I assume - use their same magic to reconnect a new identity to old posts under a prior ident so that they all reappear under the current name; but I don't know if this is a preferred practice.

Accidentally, or intentionally, there have been a few cases of "new identities" that are a bit different than a simple "new name" for an existing identity, hence the "ambiguous tweak" about a name change.

John
Damn, John, don't TELL them all that stuff about faking the details and all that....

Thanks, John. Makes sense, and I'd like to think I would have figured most of that out for myself if I needed to.

What I had been talking about was a simple change-of-name associated with an ongong account, and it should be fairly obvious that anyone so inclinded could re-register under a brand new identity, with an entirely different result.

I was not fully conscious of the critical fact that a new and different email address would be the key to acceptance as a new member, but that makes perect sense and is obvious in hindsight. What may be less obvious is the need to "fake the details" for other things asked. This implies that the mudelves/joeclones would be keeping a lookout for currently-enrolled individuals who might be trying to create new accounts as "new and different" members.

Since I archived whole threads, I can't precisely break down my own individual posts by categories at present; but I show that I've posted to:

1,513 separate threads formally tagged as BS:. Since quite a few threads get below the line without a tag there may be quite a few others with mainly BS content that didn't get the tag. This number also includes a few "double tagged," with "BS: Tech" being one type visible with at least a few instances.

975 threads where I've made at least one post have no tag. Slightly more than half of these probably were "above the line," but that's really just a guess. It would require some rather tiresome investigation to get an accurate percentage.

680 threads were formally tagged as Tech:.

87 threads were tagged as Lyr: or Lyr Add:. Since most of our "submissions" (a few hundred?) were made via email direct to the DT volunteers, this is sort of an incidental category.

22 threads were tagged Tune Req:, Tune Add; or had titles beginning with Tune (Ident, Origins, History etc) that were easy to identify and count. The same comment for direct submissions to volunteers applies.

3,277 total threads "sort of" identifiable by kind.
7,973 total posts (including this one)

We've had terrible battles about who's killed the most threads. A question like "who's started the most" is almost certain to cause similar arguments, even though it's less ambiguous than the debate about the other end.

There is (one hopes) always a first post in every thread, while it's never quite possible to be sure a thread has been properly and decently killed because someone might come along and post to it again.

Only a clone can "officially terminate" a thread, and even then they, or another clone, might bring it back to life.

It should be quite simple to construct a data set suitable for counting how many threads each person has started.

A list of all the "individual posts" needs to be made, but only the "headers" are really needed. The list must then be sorted, possibly alphabetically.

All threads that come after the first one in a thread start with a "Re: <thread title>" so deleting all the individual post headers that begin with "Re:" would leave only a list of "first posts."

Since the second line of each header consists of "From: <poster's name>, inserting a tab or other separator ahead of "From:" (replacing the linebreak) would allow conversion to a Table which could be sorted on the second column (which would include submittor's name) and all those with the same name as for the preceding one could be incremented by one, restarting the numbering at 1 each time the name changed.

A sort using the number column (after fixing formula results to values) then would bring the highest number to one end or the other, instantly revealing who had started the most threads.

It's elementary, of course; but one needs the entire threads database all in one place to actually do it.

Yes, but if you add up their collective worth, it would rank at about the level of one short chapter from a rejected Mickey Spillane manuscript. ;-)

People who smile at you while they say things like that, Little Hawk, are the source of more misery among humans than all the Republicans in Iowa, Ohio Florida.

To quote the legendary W. Jefferson Clinton, "Shame on you.".
