It was announced today that Mary Travers is undergoing chemotherapy for a form of leukemia, but a full remission is expected within a few months.

I am sure we will see her on the road with Peter, Paul & Mary early next year.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. Get well soon Mary!

She is a gracious lady and I wish her all the best. She wouldn't remember me, but I was the kid with the guitar who had severe stage fright at a McCarthy rally in the late 1960s. I had to go on before PP+M, and there were thousands of people there. This big, tall, beautiful blonde angel (that gal has GOT to be over 6', and she was miles taller in heels) came over to me and got me settled down. She told me how much she enjoyed the song when I left the stage. I have had a flame in my heart for her ever since. What a gal.

Sad news, but I wish her well. PPM were among my earliest folk influences, and I still like their stuff.

Bad news and good news. I wish her a complete and speedy and painless and joyful recovery. She has one of the best voices I've ever heard, and it would be a shame to...well, you know.

So get well already!

I have to admit I'm relieved. When I first saw this thread, I was afraid it would say Mary had passed away.

She has always been one of my favorites. As I may have posted elsewhere, my 4th grade music teacher lost her job after teaching us the PP&M covers of what are now classics written by Dylan, Woody, Ochs, Seeger, et.al. The images conveyed were, I guess, way too radical for the lily white Chicago suburbs of the 60's (and the 3 part harmony was way radical for a bunch of 10 year olds as well, but man, I loved it at first sight).

Beauty isn't always in the 'eye' of the beholder. I thought Mary Travers' true beauty came straight from her soul, and it is still to this day delectably apparent to my 'ears' whenever I hear her sing. There are few performers that I enjoy and admire more than Mary. Here's hoping we will be blessed with her on-stage presence for years to come.

And Brucie, like many Mudcatters, I envy you your memories. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I feel strange talking about them because it seems like 'name dropping'. I do recall her as a very gracious woman, lotsa class and a real kindness in her. I had loved her voice since the PP+M album, and to see her sing was WOW. She had a determined look on her--that determination extended to her eyes, face, body language. Her smile was beautiful and she had a firm handshake. Looked right at ya when she spoke. Pretty heady stuff for a teenager who wanted to puke at the thought of facing an audience of thousands. I still listen to that album from time to time and it reminds me that Milt Okum (sp?) was a phenomenal vocal arranger--he worked also with the Chad Mitchell Trio and the Mitchell Trio.

Anyway, Ms Travers--she will always be Ms Travers to me--was the epitome of grace, and I keep her in my prayers. We all gotta die at sometime, but some deaths will affect each of us more than others. I truly hope this is not her time because it will be a poorer world without her.

I'm sorry to hear she's ill and wish her a speedy and full recovery.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, she gave a really interesting class here in NYC at the New School. Does anyone else remember this?

It lasted about 10 weeks, and there was a different musician guest each week. Some that I (think I) remember were Tom Paxton, Odetta, maybe (?) Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie (on different weeks). I also think I'm remembering Christine Lavin and Buskin and Batteau, who were very active with the Fast Folk people at that time. And maybe Tom Chapin?

At any rate, regardless of my poor memory at the moment, there were different folk performers each week. Mary Travers interviewed them, and then they also took questions from the audience. (This was held in the New School auditorium.) After all of this, each performer did a mini concert.

Oh, and one week, another announcer showed up (I believe it was Pete Fornatale, a NY radio dj) and said he was substituting for Mary, who was ill that night. His guests, however, were Peter and Paul. After awhile, of course, Mary did appear, and the three performed together.

Does anyone else remember this, and remember the full list of guests?

I recall that on the first night, Mary Travers stated she was a bit nervous about how this all would come off. Her perceived nervousness didn't seem to last long, and she soon seemed completely comfortable. The audience seemed very interested and very appreciative. I've never been to anything else quite like this since then, and really enjoyed it. I remember some of the trio's performances too, but this was something different and special to me.

Zhenya

I'm so sorry that Mary has a serious illness. Although she's a star, she's more like a personal friend to many of us, and we all wish her well.

We wish her well, too, from Colorado. Every year our PBS station brings out a PP7M video to play for fundraising. I never get tired of their performances and their music. She is like a Gawddess of Folk and I think she has the strength to make it through this.

All the Best, Ms. Travers,

kat

Lets hope she makes a speedy recovery. Peter Paul and Mary had a strong influence on my singing back in the sixties and their version of Blowing in the Wind is still one of my favourites.

EG:

Their version is the ONLY version of Blowin' in the Wind, IMO. I can hear it in my head right now, and the voice she brings to it is remarkable. In the vernacular, "She be somethin' else."

Love and prayers for a full recovery Mary, from yet another who was influenced by your music, a breath of fresh air in the mind-numbing atmosphere of pop (or is it pap?). How many of us there must be out there! If we all posted to this thread I think Mudcat would grind to a halt.

Glad to hear that a full recovery is expected. Having lost a dear friend to leukemia recently I am afriad of the worst. Good luck Mary.

When I was a kid my sister and I had to do the dishes after supper. We would put a pile of PPM on the turntable and sing along to all those old songs while we worked.

On that PBS special the song she sings with her granddaughter in her lap is a real heart-stopper. Gets me every time I hear it.
