....alternately known as the Revenge of the Son of the Shite-Free Tavern

I haven't been around much lately, but it's been for good reasons. Since some Mudcatters have been partially responsible for my recent joys, and I'm a firm believer that no good deed should go unpunished, I decided to come in here. I'm going to clean off a few tables, break Bert's credit card out from behind the In Case of Emergency Break Glass and set up a few for some people who really deserve it.

For SINSULL, I'm going to invent a new drink called THE GOLDEN SEAL. Her ideas and quick thinking (not to mention her quest to knit sweaters for every lobster on the East Coast) made our classroom OscarParty a complete and total hit.

For our Leej, something amber, neat and in a clean glass. You've inspired a classroom of new writers, and doubled my enrollment for next quarter. I don't know whether to kiss you or kill you, but keep writing regardless.

For Guy Wolff, a bottomless pint for sheer Mudcatability. I asked permission to use "A" song, and in return you offer a handful. It's really the best that Mudcat can be. Thanks.

For PeterT, the new Stan sends an Orvieto Sling. All of the tips and tricks of the trade you offered served to help double enrollment for the acting class as well. Stand over by Leej until the firing squad is ready.

For MizKat, a pot of tea and a huge hug for talking me down off the ceiling more than once over the quarter. You know what you do, keep doing it.

For Little Hawk, JTS and CarolC, Mousethief, Amos, Gareth, and all the other Literary Buds who sparked a story or twelve over the years, rootbeer floats all the way around. I showed a few of the links to my students and next quarter they are going to write their own "Mudcat Story"---hey, we invented a genre. Who knew.

And finally, for Rick Fielding, a huge fishbowl-snifter full of Angel Fluff, umbrellas and sparklers. When I'd first mentioned doing something like these classes, years ago, Rick had the foresight to tell me a little story. Something like "Once upon a time there was this woman named Heather..." that basically boiled down to "You might as well do what makes you happy, 'cause your worst day doing that is going to be better than your best day now..." How right you were.

Cheers,
~JenEllen

Big SIGH of Relief: I saw Golden Seal and read Golden Showers. And with JenEllen, one never knows. I will accept the JD gratefully and pour one for yourself. Is MMario going to break free from the other tavern and cook something or are we on our own?

First of all, congratulations! It sounds like you had a major success...whatever it was you did. I might have had a slight stroke or been abducted by aliens or something. Am I supposed to know what y'all are talking about? If not, it sounds like it would make a wonderful tale and more folks than just me would love to hear about it. If I just forgot, I'd love to hear about it again. Thread referrals welcome. I await a clue.

Hi, CarolC. No real backstory, just wanting to thank some special folks for some exceptional help.

As a little 'something to do this summer' I taught two classes for adults with developmental disabilities. One was Poetry and the other was Reading/Plays. I really didn't have the faintest idea what I was doing, and I badgered a lot of good people around here and got some good advice. It has turned into a great program (thank you all) and we are going to continue it next quarter. Poetry is changing to a Creative Writing class ---they all want to try different projects. The Plays class is going to be one solid play instead of working on multiple projects. We just finished a soap-opera re-write of Hamlet that they have titled "The Young and The Danish". It's a hoot, and we should have a lot of fun doing it.

The best part is that after seeing what their friends did last quarter, EVERYONE enrolled in these classes this quarter. I'm serious. There is a 2-hour block in the day where the other instructors have no other students. I said I'd take anyone who wanted to have a crack at it, and now I'm going to have to figure out how to teach lines to people who can't read, and creative writing to people who can't write, but whatthehell....

Now, ya'll keep your fingers crossed for good grants and a permanent spot in the curriculum. Cheers, and the next round's on Bert.

~Jen

I hope she'll come in and share with ya'll....she's worked some of her very own magic with some very special adults; mostly those whom society never would figure could produce a book of their own poetry...but then society didn't reckon on our JenDarlin'! Just wait 'til she's tells ya more. She IS an inspiration and boy, is she going to have her hands full this term!

Thanks, Jen...we'll leave the light on and always be here for you.

Hiya JE.......Yogi might have phrased it, "You miss a lot when you're missing a lot," but I am sending you my very best on this wonderful work anyway. I haven't been around much these past few months and though I knew a little from my pipeline source (kat, of course) I am more than overjoyed to get the real poop.....uh, so to speak.........

Tell your students that you have received a great reward for their work and are now the recipient of The Order of the Fiery Kestrel. Tell them too that this is a very exclusive Order with only one member and it was bestowed upon you by a committee that rewards only the very best. You are indeed one of a kind and it's my honor to know you. Teaching such a class is actually the reward valued most and you have got that one first and foremost!!!

Spaw

PS....If they need anything to do, I would be happy to send them anything from the myriad stacks of unfinished tripe I have lying about. Perhaps they can find enough value in it to finish the stuff. I find it gets about half done and shifts categories in my mind from "Mildly Amusing" to "Pain in the Ass."

Spaw, they actually LIKE your tripe (hey, the odds were there had to be somebody out there who did...). The day before the class camping trip, you can imagine how hard it was to keep order. I actually thought about trying to hold class for about two seconds. Somebody giggled, then snorted mid-laugh, which set everyone off into giggles and snorts. I took whatever lesson I had planned that day and gave it up to the gods. There was NO way anyone was going to settle down, so I brought up the Juke Joint Thread on the screen and started reading. They actually took a vote (we've been doing a lot of voting lately) to stay in during break and find out if you or Blondie won the race. I'm saving the Regs and the flaming christmas trees for the holidays....

I did a workshop on voting; registered everyone to vote, got all the class computers bookmarked with surfwax.com, and as a practice in voting, we made up ballots with everyone from the Plays class. Best actor, actress, ect. I was telling mISS dAMN cAPSLOCKS about it and she says "Oh, don't forget the gold seals on the envelopes". They all had to present an award and be prepared to give an acceptance speech. Everyone saw those dAMN sEALS on the envelopes and flipped. It was the rEAL tHING. Priceless.

CarolC, we haven't talked a bit about clowns. What did you have in mind?

now I'm going to have to figure out how to teach lines to people who can't read, and creative writing to people who can't write,

cooperative learning - those who can write take dictation from those who cannot -

those who can read recite the lines for those who cannot read. (hey - it's the way shakespear's actors learned THEIR lines!)

Wonderful !!

My youngest was in a summer drama program which created a show using "gorilla playwriting techniques" The playwrite actually sat with the kids and a lap top and they composed as they brainstormed. The end result was pretty amazing.

If some students have a real problem with memorizing lines, remember that by setting it to music you change sides of the brain and can get dramatically different results. I'm amazed each summer by the song repetoire the special needs campers have accumulated over the years. They often far surpass the staff.

But you seem to be well under control and doing amazing things. Congradulations !

Those of you who got the autographed copies of their poetry books, count yourselves blessed. I sure did.

The way I did the poetry class was that we read poems written by famous poets and by "real" people, and then did exercises and wrote poems in the same style. I thought it was important that they know that any person you meet can be a writer, they don't have to be famous. They always asked where a poem came from, and if it was one of you guys it always seemed more special.

They loved the Death Song that kat sent me ages ago from "Howdy, Honey, Howdy", and Micca's poem "Question Time", but the real turning point was all due to our Leej. I found an old poem of his and asked to use it in class. Went well. He sent a second that just floored them. The woman who read that day (we take turns reading) just set the page down and said "Wow." They had to write about "Regret" that day, and no one wanted to do it. It's too hard, too ugly, no one likes to think about that. We talked a lot that day and they finally came to the understanding that somtimes it IS hard and ugly, no fooling, but if you can make someone else say "Wow" when they read it, you might be on to something.

Anyway, the regret poems were written and included, and the last day of class I get a bunch of giggling girls outside the office with a stack of those books. They went and autographed them (cuz that's what authors do, duh....) and asked me to send them to their writer friends.... So, enjoy!

I'm just a passing stranger who likes the idea of The Young and the Dane.
Don't know if you can raise an earlier thread of mine under Who is the Furry Dane, but a guest posting on there from Lovely Louise giving a lyric of 'There is nothing like a Dane' might just tickle your crew!
Best wishes for all your works!

Thank them for the book Jen, and tell them they have given to me at least as much as I can ever give to them.

In Poetry Class

In poetry class
we are not wasting time
we are taking moments of our lives
and forging them into words
We are capturing the moments
of pain, or regret, or longing, or beauty
and firing them into poems
in the kilns of our hearts.
We are forging poems
As palpable and shining as rings of gold
These poems are treasures
(though we do not hide them away)
these treasures enrichen us
(though we give them away)
These words belong to all of us,
(though they come from me)

In poetry class
we are not wasting time
we are performing miracles
changing life into art
with the Magic of our Minds

Keep up the good work!

Yesterday was the first day back to class, and it was like a ZOO. On our "FUN" billboard, I hung a copy of Leej's poem and the card that Kat sent. All the gals wanted copies of both and they have them stuck in their writing notebooks for good luck. It will be interesting to see what happens. From what I saw yesterday, I think it will be an enormous incentive. The girls that took the class last time have an actual real-world reward for something they did, and everyone who is new this quarter wants something so special for themselves. It'll be good for them. This is, of course, assuming they survive the quarter. After yesterday I was threatening to sell them all to the first gypsy caravan that passed....*bg*
Thanks, you guys.

I hope you were able to find a cast recording of "South Pacific" so they could make the connection with the "There Is Nothing Like A Dame" pattern. Seems like you already are into deepening the experience of your students, and helping them have lots of "WOW" moments. God Bless. Tw
