Perhaps one or more of these organizations would have info about songs used in Juneteenth celebrations: http://www.juneteenth.com/orgs.htm

June 20, 2021: These are in view via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine but there is no telling if any of it is still accurate: https://web.archive.org/web/20030205061808/http://www.juneteenth.com/orgs.htm

Juneteenth is the 19th, on Saturday this year. Easy to remember (at least for us) because it is my ex's birthday (and usually right around Father's Day). It's a big deal in Texas, getting bigger every year.

It's an offical recognized in about 14 states but not a State Holiday or day off. Any recognition or celebration is locally determined. Most places it's the nearest Saturday to June 19th (June 19th in 2004)

Texas, naturally, is more official about it than elsewhere and may retain the actual June 19 date. State institutions are closed on the 19th.

Celebrates movement of those who were slaves in the us prior to emancipation to the status of monetary slavery thus joining the
rest of us!

Another year older and deeper in debt!

I guess that spreading the debt around may be a good thing!

Someday I may be able to find out when my family way way back was enslaved....must be a time....way back in poland. Slavs=slaves
I am sure we would celebrate our freedom with a polka hop and kielbassa...

Anyway welcome aboard!
Charge it up sign it off!

Slaves in the Confederacy were freed on the first day of 1863. Slaves in Texas didn't hear about it until June 19. They've made a holiday of it ever since.

Somebody asked about music for the day (a few yrs ago?). How about "Oh, Freedom". Number of recordings of it, including Hally Wood, possibly on "HW Sings Texas Folk Songs"; Stinson, early 1950s.
Sing/play anything that celebrates freedom. Tw

Well, obviously!

As I walked out one morning, it was on the Teenth of June;
The birds were singing in the trees, and all the flowers in bloom.
On a primrose bank I lay me down beside a crystal stream.
So deep, so deep I fell asleep and I began to dream.

I dreamed I saw a clipper ship a-floating on the tide,
With four and twenty sailor lads all for to be her guide.
On the deck was one young lad, and he much alarmed me:
'Rise up, rise up your weary hearts, for the royal sons are free.'

And when we heard of liberty, we let ourselves be known;
And were you at the meeting, boys, they held at Innisoon?
Long time, long time we've been in chains, but now at last we're free.
And if ever we're enchained again, we'll fight for liberty.'

Here's a health to the three O'Donnells; they're a credit to the name.
They're a credit to their country, boys, in honour, birth and fame.
There were two of them made clergymen all in the church of Rome;
And God himself took one of them unto his heavenly home.

Here's a health to Father William who fought at Waterloo.
He fought with the French and Spaniards the English to subdue.
He fought them with his army till he could no longer stand.
He was once the Lord Lieutenant's man, but he's now our brave clergyman.

Uuhhmm--as a song to celebrate freedom, maybe. But how does a song about Irish sailors & priests relate to the day the slaves in Texas (& other Southern states) got official notice that they were free?? That's what the date signifies--June 19,1865--the day the official announcement was made by an officer in the Union Army as they re-established the fact that Texas was again(still?) a state in The Union....Tw

I nominate "Uncle Joe's Hail Columbia" (it's in the DT) for the honor of commemorating any and all emancipations of slaves, whatever the date.

(Ignore the minstrel-stage dialect)

UNCLE JOE'S "HAIL COLUMBIA"
(Henry Clay Work)

Uncle Joe come home a singing, Hail Columby!
Glorious times de Lord is bringing, Now let me die.
Fling de chains into de ribber, Lay de burden by;
Dar is one who will delibber, Now let me die.

cho:

Ring de bells in eb'ry steeple!
Raise de Flag on high!
De Lord has come to sabe His people,
Now let me die.

Bressed days, I lib to see them, Hail Columby!
I hab drawn a breff of freedom, Now let me die.
Ninety years I bore de burden, Den He heard my cry
Standin' on de banks ob Jordan; Now let me die.

cho

Dis is what de war was brought for. Hail, Columby!
Dis is what our faders fought for. Now let me die,
Dar's an end to all dis sorrow, Comin' by and by,
Prayin for dat bressed tomorrow -- Now let me die.

cho

I hab seen de rebels beaten, Hail Columby!
I hab sen de hosts retreatin' -- Now let me die.
O! dis Union can't be broken Dar's no use to try,
No sech ting de Lord has spoken -- Now let me die.

cho

I'll go home a-singing "Glory!" Hail Columby!
Since I heard dis bressed story -- Now let me die.
'Tis de ransom ob de nation Drawin' now so nigh
'Tis de day ob full salbation! Now let me die.

cho

Published in 1865, probably in response to the end of the war and/or the 13th amendment, if not both. I love this song, though I don't do it in full minstrel dialect.

Bob

1) I know it's one word. IT WASN'T MY THREAD, BUT THAT'S WHAT THE DAMNED THREAD NAME IN 2003 WAS.

2)Stilly's link had construction problems. This one works: BS: Happy June Teenth
Thank you.

OK, the misspelling was MG's thread and Bobert's thread, but y'all pretty much thrashed THEM, so they won't make that mistake again. I fixed the links in Stilly's post.

Otherwise, I think we need some new songs.

Typos are us.

I went back and looked at the very early links from decades ago that weren't working and put up preserved versions of each from the Internet Archive.
