Jean Ritchie recorded a beautiful version in the early 1950's. I think that the last line did not have the word "still" Larry Parish

I can't remember how it goes because it has been replaced with a military jody (could this be evidence of brain washing? OO RAH)

Bo Diddly, Bo diddly have you heard
Papa gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird don't sing
Papa gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring don't shine
Papa gonna bring it to the five a dime
If that five and dime don't take it back
Papa gonna put it in a gunny sack
Papa gonna hang it from the highest tree
For all the world to see
I said papa now don't blame me
I'm gonna join the USMC (or U.S. Army)...

It then would segue into the next jody

Rick

Bo Diddley Bo Diddley have you heard
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird don't sing
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don't shine
Papa's gonna take it to a private eye
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take no ring from me

Hey Bo Diddley (echo)
Hey Bo Diddley (echo)

...OR...

Hush little baby don't say a word
Daddy's gonna buy you a Thunderbird
If you don't like that type of car
Your daddy's gonna buy you a Jay-goo-arr
If that Jay-goo-arr won't do
Daddy's gonna buy you a Ferrari, too
If that Ferrari isn't your choice
Daddy's gonna buy you a new Rolls Royce
If you don't like the Rolls, we'd better have a talk
'Cause after that baby you can damn well walk

The first one is from my days as a blues musician, the second is from my childhood.

Thank you all -

I knew it SHOULD be in digital trad., but I counldn't figure out what to search on. This is a great help, and lets us conclude the bedtime routine in better time and with slightly more assurance on the part of the parent.

From PP&M's "Peter, Paul and Mommy"

MOCKINGBIRD
(Adapt. & Arr. by Travers/Stookey/Yarrow)

Hush little baby, don't say a word
Pappa's gonna buy you a mockingbird

If that mockingbird don't sing
Pappa's gonna buy you a diamond ring

If that diamond ring turns brass
Pappa's gonna buy you a lookin' glass

If that lookin' glass gets broke
Pappa's gonna buy you billy goat

If that billy goat don't pull
Pappa's gonna buy you a cart and bull

If that cart and bull turns over
Pappa's gonna buy you a doggie named Rover

If that dog named Rover don't bark
Pappa's gonna buy you a horse and cart

If that horse and cart fall down
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

When I first learned the song, from a Kentucky
grandmother back a half-century or so ago, the last
line was:
"you'll be the sweetest li'l baby in town."
rather than
"you'll still be the sweetest l'il baby in town."

Sort of a recognition of a string of improbabilities.

It's in the DT. Search for [gonna buy you] Since both little and mockingbird have contractions, it didn't come up for either [hush little baby] or mockingbird. The moral of this story is to search for more than one phrase.

Hush, Little Baby

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's going to buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's going to buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's going to buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's going to buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's going to buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's going to buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

I don't know why you expect to be different from all the other parents, we all desparately make up words.

I use ... if that Billy Goat runs away, daddy's going to get you a horse and sleigh.

If that horse and sleigh turns over daddy's going to get you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover won't bark, daddy will get you a meadowlark.

then I start getting desparate.

There was a parody done by the Brothers In Law in the sixties called 'Lullaby to a Spoined Brat' does anyone have the lyrics to that?

I have been desperately and randomly making up verses to the Mockingbird lullaby to satisfy my 4 yr old daughter's requests for it, but would like help either from scratch or from memory bridging some of the gaps:

Hush little baby don't say a word Momma's gonna buy you a mocking bird If that mockingbird don't sing Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring If that diamond ring is brass [glass] Momma's gonna buy you a looking glass If that looking glass gets broke Momma's gonna buy you a billy goat If that billy goat won't [exactly what do billy goats do??] Momma's gonna buy you a ...

[somewhere in here are: Momma's gonna buy you a dog named Rover If that dog named Rover don't bark Momma's gonna buy you a horse and cart If that horse and cart turn over Momma's gonna buy you a dog named Rover ... and I get caught in a loop]

and it ends

and if that something something something ...own you'll still be the prettiest little baby in town

I know James Taylor and Carly Simon recorded a pretty raucous version of it in my youth, but even that didn't have all the verses I remembered from my parents' folk song nights.

Your help is greatly appreciated -

Lee Thomson
