Not that they'd ever admit it, but it sounds as if some people in the UK government agree. (See here)

They should just give them to the terrerists, not everybody.
be cheaper that way.

ie send them and say=
"dear Mr Terrerist, here is your   ID Card, please carry it with you at all times, or you could get a big fine    [£100    or something]."

I put Mr Terrorist as I reckon wimmin are too busy shopping and watching eastenders etc to get involved in terrerism.

You know I think a lot of this is about choice. I don't mind having my blood type on a card, along with the information that I'm allergic to penicillin, and that I'm an organ donor. I don't mind that it states my height, weight, date of birth, and even has a lousy picture of me on it. But I still want this to be my choice.

I do not like the fact that it has my address, for example, unless I agree to this, because if I don't have an address, as is the case with many homeless people, I am automatically denied a whole slew of options offered to those who do.

It really is about what can be denied because of them, rather than for any other reason. That combined with the idea of something being mandatory to the point where if you don't have it on your person, you can be fined a huge amount, is just not my idea of living in a free society. It's knuckling under to the climate of fear which is being used to manipulate us to thinking that this will in any way whatsoever curb international terrorism. It won't.

From where I sit, it seems as if there are various rights and perks available to many of us, from being allowed to operate a vehicle, park said vehicle in a designated location, through obtaining health care, ending up with simply being able to identify your corpse at the end. You don't have to carry an ID relating to any of these abilities or entitlements, but you run the risk of being denied something something to which you *are* entitled, if you don't have some proof of this entitlement.

In the US, job applicants must show two IDs proving US citizenship or some other accomodation in order to start this job. This is mandated in a fairly recent law that aims to reduce the number of illegal immigrants working in US jobs by curtailing their access to work in the US. At my job helping to run a small convenience store, I routinely check IDs to insure that people desiring to purchase tobacco or alcohol are old enough to legally buy these controlled substances. My driving license has my blood type and instructions that I am an organ doner should I be unable to represent myself in these situations. While I don't really think that someone might mistake me for someone under the age of majority or unable to drive, I really think that there might be times when having a health care provider know what sort of blood to pump into me, should the occasion merit this action without having to wait until some of my remaining blood      is typed and cross matched. Not so long ago a young girl died after heart surgery when no one checked her blood type before transplanting an incompatible heart from a donor of different blood type.

Dave

Depends what you mean by stupid.

Gibson, why are you not here explaining about the constitutional right to an armed militia to defend against oppression by "legitimate" authority?

InOBU, your view?

They ARE watching. Just to check, one day I sent an email about terrorists, suitcase bombs, ann so on. I did have a legitimate reason, I just phrased it to contain all the buzzwords that GCHQ monitors. Next day, unmarked big blue Ford outside my house with burly eople with blue suits in. Stayed 3 hours, then left.

Oh, and on the subject of Blunkett, looks as if his red hot poker did for him after all. Not that he's a lot more dangerous than Jack Straw. Both turncoats from socialism.

Oh, Id. *snicker*

Always puts me in mind of the Id Monster in Forbidden Planet, Walter Pidgeon's repressed desires amplified and rampant, battling against a young Leslie Nielson, Earl Holliman, and Richard Anderson.

Can't wait to see the prequel to the classic.

Id cards would be a good idea, however. Find out all kinds of stuff about your deep desires and why you supress them--do so at your bank machine and get the results from the instant teller. (No, not Edward.) Or slide it at the pump (and like how Freudian is THAT?) as you gas up your vehicle (and again we have Sigmund). Drive away from the--I can't continue. Be still my bleating hart (OOPS).

Hell, if it's just an ID card issued by government, then NO problem. I was thinking it would contain DNA sample, blood sample, economic info, other info of that nature. Sheeeeet. If it's just another ID card that doesn't contain any of the aforementioned info or a GPS chip, etc, they can save themselves the money. I have a driver's license. With a picture. Makes me look like an older and much more distinguished Clinton Hammond--without the hat.

I can't see why there should be a problem with ID cards. You do pay taxes, don't you? So "they" know you anyway.
And in the countries that use drivers' licences instead of ID cards - what do those people do who don't have a licence?

No... it's that I'm old and intelligent enough to know that not only is Big Brother NOT watching... he doesn't even care to...

Whatever... Just rest easy on your pillows that the likes of ME are not in power... yet...

"so how is info about me anyone's business?"
Info on you is a LOT of peoples business... like the people who granted you your drivers licence... and your bank account... Your medical coverage... the list goes on and on...

"ask any one who had numbers tatooed(sic.) on his or her arm how they felt about their ID cards"
This OBVIOUSLY has NOTHING to do with Nazi Germany... d'uh...

Again... whatever... *dismissive gesture*   tell yourself whatever you have to to get through the night... dismiss anyone else's opinion as arrogance, or youth (You folks should BE so lucky) or whatever lies you tell yourself to make yourself feel right in the world...

I'll be over here telling myself different lies to the exact same end.....

as I said above...

"so who is more right? You're gonna say you are and I'm gonna say I am... so who is more right?"

I vote, None Of The Above....

The big deal is that I HAVE nothing to hide, so how is info about me anyone's business? You want it to be universal, it won't be. I ain't interested. You, BTW, sound like someone who employs allegories that don't fit. Reminds me of the guy in California who did not have his arrest explained to him. Turns out that the case against him was seen to in the supreme court of the USA. They ruled in Mr Mirand's favour. Little bit of history for ya there, Clint.

There's no point in the thing if it's not universal...

Sorry, brucie, but you sound sorta like the idiot from Chatham who was trying to sue the Canadian government... see he noticed that his drivers licence has a number on it... and that some book in the Bible talked about everyone having some Number Of The Beast... he saw them as one and the same, but didn't want to keep getting tickets for driving without a licence...

He was later diagnosed with being a paranoid loon, and his 'case' was dismissed...

If you've got nothing to hide, then what's the big deal?

CH, I hope you never have to know what ID cards can be used for by people who do not have your best interests in mind.

You may not understand the ramifications of such things, but ask any one who had numbers tatooed on his or her arm how they felt about their ID cards. They were stamped with a big J, and from then on, it certainly DID make it easy to find them.

This isn't paranoia, it's history. And as far as I'm concerned, it's about to be repeated.

It wouldn't stop the rape, but it would make finding the perp a LOT easier...

"I think IDs of the sort being suggested are an ultimate attack on personal freedom."
And I think that sounds like paranoid ranting... so who is more right? You're gonna say you are and I'm gonna say I am... so who is more right?

People having our 'personal' information is not the issue. The issue was, is and will be what that information is used for. Basically, you had better trust the folks with it, the 'system' on which it's stored and the people who handle it. I think IDs of the sort being suggested are an ultimate attack on personal freedom. I also think people would be wise to wake up to that. Period.

Just a nervous little laugh from the back of the theatre.

"We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected the promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world-government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the National autodetermination practiced in past centuries"--David Rockefeller in an address to a Trilateral Commission meeting
in June of 1991

In a way, parenthetically, the situation is the reverse of something a gun-collecting friend of mine said when registration of ALL firearms became law in Canada: "After they know about all my guns and where to get them, what are they gonna do that I don't like?"

So, after we all have implants or IDs, what are they gonna do that we won't like?

Get all a person's stuff on one card and it's fairly easy to make that person disappear, IMO.

Reminds me of "The Net" with Sandra Bullock (sp?).

But then, no government would ever do that. Or bank. Or security organization. Naw.

So then what would be the difference between that and say numbers implanted on our arms? None, really. Hell, we are all becoming a collection of numbers, aren't we!

I've got my Soc. Sec. card, Drivers license, bank cards, credit cards, Military ID, security badge for the building, etc.

How's about combining a few and accepting one card instead of demanding three different ones with the same info (and each as easily forged as the next?).

Considering the world we live in today, I see no valid objection to requiring a photo ID card. I don't know how anyone in the U. S. could by without having a photo ID of some sort now. Even though it is not required by the government, try cashing a check without one.
