Came across this story about Rambling Jack Elliott, who's evidently in Australia. From the story and picture he looks pretty good.

Anyone get along to the concert he was giving this week in Melbourne?

There's a quote in the story from Arlo Guthrie I like:""There wouldn't be no Bob Dylan without Jack Elliott. There wouldn't be half the people we know and love. Jack lived it: other people talked about it."

I loved Jack Elliott back in the early '60's, he led me to so many great artists like Rev Gary Davis and Jesse Fuller.
Nice to hear that he's still going strong.

Interesting suggestion in that article that the "ramblin'" may have originally referred more to his discursive conversation than his travels.

I managed to speak to Jack after a gig in Glasgow about 7 years ago, while buying one of his albums after the show. Not knowing what to say, in the presence of such a great man, and being a BIG Dylan fan, I said "you know, I think Bob Dylan was influenced by your style, attitude, phraseology and so on".

The Ramblin One replied, "well you know, I roomed with him one time, and I guess maybe some of it kinda rubbed off".

I think Arlo's just trying to use Dylan's cult status there to give RJ a boost (Arlo's a Dylan fan too, btw). Dylan would have been big even if RJ and Arlo's father Woody had never been born. Different certainly, especially up to about 1963, but Dylan is his own driven man.

I hear that Jack got his nickname from Odetta's mother, who after hearing him one day, said to her daughter,"My, that boy does ramble, on doesn't he."

The thing is by the time Bob Dylan turned up, if you wanted to hear how Woody Guthrie sounded live, when he sounded like himself, Jack Elliott was as close as you could get. And Bob wanted to get that way of performing under his belt, and succeeded pretty well.

Sadly we missed him. Found out too late to travel the distance. There are few performers who are able to use their guitars the way he can. Uses it like another voice. His "style" never gets in the way of the song. We often play his CD and cry.
True-love met him back in the 60s - put him up on his couch for the night once. Took the chance to allow a bit of Jack's magic work on him too. Reckons he's one of the truly great performers. Joy

Apparently he's on at Tilley's Devine Cafe in Lyneham ACT tonight. I wish he'd come over to the West.

Cheers

Well,

He was meant to play at Tilleys, but they cancelled the gig - supposedly not enough pre-sold tickets.

They then had the gall to list on their website that HE cancelled due to ill health!

There was also another Melbourne group who travelled up to support Jack in his gig (Tracey Miller and the Sunbeams)- they too got stranded by Tilleys....

I hear that someone got him a gig on the Sunday night, and the place was packed out with 150 people who had an intimate night with Jack...

Good on ya mate!

G

Well Tilleys needs to be boycotted. Can anyone tell me how long he will be in the ACT. Haven't seen him mentioned for the National. We'll be in Canberra for that. I'd really love to see him. Joy
