Royal Wedding Speculation Fever
Grips Britain — Again

L O N D O N, Mar 31, 2004 — Fresh reports that Queen Elizabeth II is warming up to allowing her son to marry his longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles are sending Britain into a royal buzz. A report in The Spectator magazine, quoting an unidentified "well-informed Palace observer," said the queen has agreed to allow the marriage to go ahead.

Although spokesmen at both St. James' and Buckingham palaces dismiss talk of a Charles-Camilla wedding as "total speculation," Peter Oborne, the author of The Spectator article, has said he is convinced by gossip from the royal courtiers that Charles has presented Camilla with a beaded crown belonging to Mary Queen of Scots. This gift is highly significant, as the crown, formerly part of Diana's wedding dowry, is said to bestow good fortune upon the wearer. Aides have also commented that Charles and Camilla have been selecting bedlinen.

"The queen realises she must sort out the relationship before Charles becomes king," Oborne said. "If she doesn't, the early months of his reign will be dominated by headlines about sleeping arrangements at Buckingham Palace."

One of the most thorny issues preventing a wedding is Charles' future dual role as supreme governor of the Church of England and king. Anglican priests are forbidden to marry parishioners who are divorcees. Charles and Parker Bowles both divorced their previous spouses. The prince's ex-wife, Princess Diana, died in a 1997 car crash, so he is free to marry again in the church. But Parker Bowles' former husband, Andrew, is alive.

Oborne reports Charles' aides were scouting out alternative venues to the church, such as the registrar's office in Chelsea, London. But some observers are not so sure.

"It is inconceivable that a future king of England would consider marrying outside his own church," said Harold Brooks-Baker, an expert in royal pedigrees. "The Prince of Wales will not marry a divorced person without the Church of England changing its regulations so that all divorced people can be married by an Anglican priest."

Oborne himself admitted Charles was "astonishingly aware" of the delicacy of the matter. News of Elizabeth's "grudging acceptance" of a royal marriage prompted betting agents to slash their odds the couple will tie the knot from 5-to-1 down to 3-to-1. Copyright © 2004 ABCNEWS Internet Ventures.

I never got the Anglican thing. Wasn't the church created partly so that Henry VIII could divorce and remarry? Any UK Anglicans who can explain the church's history on this?

Actually Henry VIII never got divorced. His first and fourth marriages were annulled one on the grounds of incest (Catherine of Aregon had been married to his brother although she maintained to her death that that marriage was never consumated)and the other non-consumation. He tended to take the view that if you really had irreconsilable differences with him you would have your head chopped off. Anglican stance on divorce has always been against but some churches have allowed people to remarry in church particularly in the days when a guilty party was named in divorce procedings (ie innocent party may be allowed)

The petition to annul the marriage to Catherine of Aragon was based on a law that forbade someone marrying their brother's widow. She did not commit incest (that would require a brother or father being involved) but the dilemma for the Pope was that the marriage had been granted dispenation to go ahead in the first place based on the claim Catherine and Arthur had not consumated it. Suddenly Henry wanted it annulled for the converse reason. While the dispute dragged on, Henry knocked up Anne Boleyn (he was shagging her AND her sister, what a trooper) and he decided that the Pope was a wanker and declared himself head of the Church in England, annulled his marriage to Catherine and married Anne. Ta-da. The incestous affair was between Katherine Howard and her cousin Thomas Culpepper -- although I believe doing your cousin is perfectly acceptable in some parts. Make a great soap opera, hey?

His affair with Anne's sister would actually have meant the same bar to his marrying Anne that was the basis for his attempt to get his marriage to Catherine annulled. All very complicated. Much more straighforward to have their heads chopped off - that way there was no doubt that the marriage was over.

I've always liked Prince Charlie and of course my London born grandmother never became an American citizen and sang "God Save The Queen" til the end of her days. But Elizabeth did a lousy job of raising her children. I don't like her one bit. She's a world class ball-buster! And I know from ball-busting!

I think she did a rather well given the task set before her. But then I don't know anything about the woman other than what I read in the tabloids either.

I just don't think she gave them enough hands-on love or unconditional positive regard and that she is far too concerned with what the English public will think than she is about their personal happiness. They all seem like fine individuals.

It was October, and my wife and I were traveling through Scotland. We went to Balmoral (the town) in a cold, drizzly evening and even though Chuck and Di were at The Big House, nobody had the decency to even offer a cup of tea! I think that is was Chuck's idea, not Di's, but even so! It was at that point that I dropped the Royals from my list of Acceptable People and I shan't invite any of them around if they come a-visiting.

The very idea!

Well, the "beaded crown" gave the game away.
If there was a beaded crown, it wasn't very lucky
for Mary Queen of Scots -OR- Princess Diana.

He was always going to marry her but she couldn't produce good breeding stock for the Royals. That's why Di was brought in. The day that Di was killed I said this would happen. I have inside info ... now I will be stoned out of the village! Did I tell you my phone's being tapped?

If Charles were really a prince and not just a tractor driver that got into the wrong perambulator, he would just go ahead and marry Camilla.

Of course, the whole thing may be flummery and he may not want to marry her at all. Who would want to marry a woman with a history of cheating? :}

A couple of you have pointed out the shortcomings of Charles's mother - HRH the Queen of England - You sexist B*stards.
How come you don't blame the substantial shortcomings of her offsprings on that big flat-footed, arrogant, streak of Greek piss that she married.
What with her being half German & half English - the recipe was there for all to see - it was all bound to end in disaster.
As for Charles he's half-Greek, quarter English and quarter German - so no wonder he is a sexual deviant.
Whats the word for the complex of being in love with your Granny -( in the way that Oedipus - is the mother "thing" )?
The French used to have an admirable way of dealing with this outrageously-cossetted, useless pack of arrogant wankers.

You were, weren't you?

Sorry, must dash. Cats to mutilate, goats to screw... a pervert's day is never done.
