Well, I thought it was a good interview, as they go.

He was pretty straightforward, except when they asked him about his "support for the war", by which they meant his voting in favor of the resolution giving GWB the authority to make the decision. I wish I had VCR'd his answer, but I really didn't follow it.

Can anyone explain what he said?

Mrs. Kerry didn't make a very good impression, but then, so what?

Love, Johnny

I watched the interview and I have to agree with you on your impression of his wife. (She is no Hillary Clinton!) Maybe she hasn't run a stop sign in a speeding car and caused the death of another person as the current Mrs. Bush did (without being charged with a felony, in fact, she was not even given a citation even though she was at fault). It would be refreshing if Mrs. Kerry's only mistake so far was being born into wealth. Kerry's response to the question on how he deals with his wife's fortune was somewhat disingenuous. He appeared a little embarrassed when she answered questions.

Kerry said:

{Quoted from the transcript}

"I voted for a process by which war would be the last resort. And those are the conditions which the president himself established. He said, 'I will build a coalition. We're going to use the United Nations, we will inspect, and I will go to war as a last resort.' He did not do anything three of those things. So yes, I believe we should have stood up to Saddam Hussein, I thought it was important for our nation's security. There was a right way to do it, and there was a wrong way to do it. The president chose the wrong way."

{End Quote}

If Mr. Bush expedited the invasion of Iraq based on misrepresenting the above conditions, then he directly lied to congress.

Cruiser, Please tell us when Laura Bush Had the accident. I thought Kerry was fine- straight forward & made a few good points. Andy Rooney was on spot-There must be a way to get Bush to Mars, and as Andy pointed out-the fuel needed for the return trip would be too heavy to make a landing. SOOOO whoever gets there can't come back. Who is going to volunteer for that? One way ticket to Palookaville.

Thank you for the quote, Cruiser.

I'm shocked, shocked, to learn "W" lied.

It wasn't a war, it was a VENDETTA "authorized" by congress, including the democrats, with one exception, Howard Dean.

Sensitive to criticism of his father, who did not have U.N. approval to attack Iraq proper, and didn't, George took it upon himself to set things right. A family vendetta, pure and simple.

George H.W. Bush didn't lose the 1996 campaign because of the Iraq war, but because of "read my lips, no new taxes." But I digress.

I'm still for Dean, because I really don't think John Kerry has what it takes to beat the Republican regime. Maybe he is saving his strength for the 8-month campaign if nominated.

Love, Johnny

"It would be refreshing if Mrs. Kerry's only mistake so far was being born into wealth."

Was she born into it or did she marry it with her first husband?
I thought her first husband was the late John Heinz, republican senator from Pennsylvania and heir to Heinz food company fortune.

You are correct MarkS, she married into wealth, that was mentioned in the 60 minutes interview.

I looked up her biography:

Teresa Heinz Kerry
Birth Date: Oct. 5, 1938
Birthplace: Mozambique, Africa
Religion: Catholic
Met John Kerry: At an environmental conference in Brazil
Occupations: Interpreter, United Nations; chairman, The Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies, present.
Education: Bachelor's degree, romance languages and literature, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, 1960 and Interpreters School of University of Geneva, 1963
Family: John Kerry's two daughters from a previous marriage, Vanessa, 27, and Alexandra, 30, and three sons from marriage to John Heinz: John, Andre, and Christopher

Mickey191:

Laura Bush was a 17 year-old high school senior (approx. 37 years ago) when the "accident" killed a high school friend of hers.

Well, at least I guess we know who CBS favors to win the nomination. One would have to pay a LOT of money for the advertising afforded Kerry via an appearance on 60 Minutes. Particularly when the segment was aired so close to the end of the Primary election.

I called Kerry a weasel, after the interview. I wonder about Mrs. Kerry. She was Senator John Heinz's wife. He was killed in a helicopter crash several years ago. He was also a Republican. It's interesting that she married Kerry an Democrat. It's also interesting that she's definately running for first lady.
I've been working on the Dean campaign, and loving it, but I won't work for Kerry. Mrs. Kerry won't want yinzers ( a term for Pittsburgh natives, since some of us use yinz as the plural of you.) on her husband's campaign. I'll vote for him, but I won't work for him. Kerry will make speeches. Dean would make a difference.

I realize that many of you don't go to other sites for political comments, then again maybe you do, but here's a bit of a rant I went on earlier today about Senator Kerry and why I do support him.

I did not know about Mrs. Bush's incident - very interesting -

Read your pro-Kerry rant. Of course, it's respectable that he went to Viet Nam and saved lives there. But it was a long time ago, and I question what he's done since. I question his lack of support for the Gulf War, where a US ally was invaded, followed by his support for the Iraq war based on phony WMD intelligence which I personally thought was bogus from the beginning. Where's the logic in that? I question his support of the President on other issues. I worry about the fact that he's missed about 60% of the votes in the Senate in the last year; sounds like he'll be another George Bush, spending 60% of his time on vacation.

I also know that someone is pulling dirty tricks in NH, including putting fake Dean stickers with confederate flags on people's cars, calling people in the middle of the night with a robot caller claiming to be from the Dean campaign, and sending emails claiming to come from Dean's campaign filled with racist and sexist language. I strongly suspect that this is Kerry's people, though of course it could be Clark's or Edwards's.

In general I don't like to be a "one issue voter." The fact of one's military record alone would never convince me to vote for anyone.

I also question the "electability" meme that says that certain people are more "electable" than others, under which Gore (experienced, incumbent, impeccable record on drugs/alcohol/personal morality, southern, Viet Nam vet, "presidential"), would have wiped the floor with Bush (failure in business, avoided Viet Nam, alcoholic, DUI incident, Southwestern, rather adolescent). Basically, the press tries to convince us that some characteristics make a candidate "electable," then in retrospect change the characteristics after each election so the last guy looks "electable."

I think Bush will blow Kerry away because he's sanctimonious and rather stiff. He's Al Gore without the incumbency (which would help him win) and without the deeply-felt devotion to policy (which would make me care about him).

I taped 60 Minutes, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Later today.

In the meantime, dragging up a forty-year-old accident that happened when Laura was only 17 and long before she married George (all involved were minors at the time, hence the suppression of records--not for any political reasons) strikes me as rather poor taste and just a bit mean-spirited. Here's the story:    Easy Does It.

When I watch Laura gazing adoringly at George when he's giving a speach, I get the impression that she has the brain of a gerbil, but I think she's a nice lady. Let's just leave her alone, okay?

Don:

Unfortunately, First Lady's (or potential ones) are part of the political equation. Eleanor, Hillary, Laura, and many more past and potential future ones have and will be scrutinized by the press. Their character matters to me. They have the potential to represent the best of the maternal aspects of a nation and serve as role models to all.

When my son was going through the process of getting his drivers license, I told him to look at a car as a 2000 pound plus lethal weapon. If he had an accident he could ruin his life, possibly mine because I bought him his first vehicle, and the lives of countless other innocent people. I told him he could be criminally charged with manslaughter if someone was killed in an accident and also civilly charged. He could be monetarily paying for an unintentional mistake throughout his life.

My son was 16 at that time. I told him he was fully responsible for his actions. He has been a good driver with one minor accident. Should he, or anyone else, cause the death of another person in an accident (vehicular manslaughter) and is at fault, I would expect him or anyone else to be legally prosecuted for that mistake. Sure, I would still love him, but when another innocent person's life is lost there must be a severe punishment, even if it is the result of a stupid mistake or negligence.

The 17 year-old Laura Welsh (Bush) was not even cited for causing the death of her 17 year-old high school friend, even though she was at fault. That is unjust to society and the relatives of the person killed. We all make mistakes and should provide retribution for those mistakes, minor or major.

I too believe Laura Bush is basically a good person, but I resent the fact that she avoided any punishment for causing the death of another person. I saw an interview with her about the incident and all she could say was that she was very sorry and devastated (paraphrased). Although she seemed genuinely remorseful, she had a great opportunity to provide a lesson to others about how they could avoid such a tragedy, but chose not to.

Cruiser, I agree with everything you have said. But it is a tragedy about which I'm quite sure Laura still has the occasional nightmare and feels the occasional unbidden wave of guilt. It's said that she underwent a considerable change as a result--became much more quiet and serious--and to this day the memory is very painful to her. The boy who died in the accident--the driver of the other car--was her sweetheart at the time. And there was no political influence involved in the fact that there were no charges brought against her. There is a load of pain and guilt there, and flogging her with it is certainly not going to heal anything. Everything I've read about her indicates that, all in all, she's a pretty nice person.

But my major objection to bringing the matter up in the current political context is that this happened fourteen years before she met George. Much as I don't want George to wind up in the White House for another four years, trying to use Laura's tragedy against George is really hitting below the belt. There is plenty to jump on George's back about without bringing up a forty-year-old accident that he had nothing to do with and can only bring a replay of the pain and agony to Laura.

Let's just don't do it.

Don Firth

Nerd, that doesn't sound like Kerry's or Clark's or any one other Democrat's dirty tricks--that sounds like Karl Rove's dirty tricks. Just sharpening the tools of the trade, getting ready for the really nasty stuff later on.
