What kind of love? That of a friend, a child, a partner, a parent? They are all different aspects of the same thing, though I suppose. Love, very simply defined, is,IMO, putting the wellbeing of the loved person above your own....up to and including laying down your life for theirs.

And then there is the "In love" part of it. The feelings that would normaly be seen as inapropriate towards a child or parent, but are also more than just sexual lust. The incredible intimacy and feeling of being "one" with another person. Suffocating for some people but hugely fulfilling and rewarding for many others. An almost purely emotional bond that has little or nothing to do with logic or duty.

And then there is this...................

WHAT IS LOVE? Lyrics

I love you whether or not you love me
I love you even if you think that I don't
Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you, but I don't mind
Why should I mind, Why should I mind

Chorus
What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway
What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear
Never worry never be sad
The answer is they cannot love this much nobody can
This is why I don't mind you doubting

And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be
The door always must be left unlocked
To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you
And not to spend the time just doubting

Howard Jones

According to the old song

What is love?
Five feet of heaven in a ponytail
The cutest ponytail
That sways with a wiggle when she walks

Anybody remember the group? I don't.
After all, the song is almost as old as I am

Jonhn Lennon's thoughts on the subject:

Love

Love is real, real is love
Love is feeling, feeling love
Love is wanting to be loved

Love is touch, touch is love
Love is reaching, reaching love
Love is asking to be loved

Love is you
You and me
Love is knowing
We can be

Love is free, free is love
Love is living, living love
Love is needing to be loved

I hope you find what you're looking for, I did 15.5 years ago. I wouldn't have made it this long without her.

Morticia had it almost dead on. The great researcher, Harry Harlow, once said that love is a condition where another's happiness is a prerequisit to one's own. After years of thought, the only possibly improvement I can see would be to add 'and welfare' to the quote. If you do, though, keep in mind that the other person has to be the only judge of what that is.

I experience it as an energy frequency. I can choose to align myself with that frequency or not. If I align myself with that frequency, I radiate it outward and others can experience it as well. Everybody can do this, whether or not there are others around for them to share it with.

Thr feling that you get when you with out knowing it or understanding why you become a prick and change from the person who the other liked you for to the fanny that you become. Well maybe thats just what I do and I shouldn't but in reallity I think that love (between a man and a woman)is when you can look that person in the eye and not be frightened of what they think of you and that they know all the bad about you as well as all the good and accept you for it. More importantly they are the same with you.
Complete honesty, trust and intimacy

In 1964, I got an "A" on a psychology paper about love, in which I mentioned Morty's basic definition, so I'm sure it must be right!

(The basic premise of the paper was to dispute a current pop-psychology book which claimed that no one could experience 'romantic love' with more than one person at a time)

What is love? An elusive thing,
The joys of which, the poets sing.
To some its all, it's pure perfection
To others it's just, a mental erection.

Love can be many more things than altruism, too. It can be a celebration of the universal spirit, thereby permitting uncalculated joy from the good luck of others. It can also foster compassion and forgiving, with or without altruistic effects. Lesser "love," as Little Hawk pointed out elsewhere recently, is usually a social contract with a host of conditions, or the biochemical disturbances referenced above.

If it's all the same to everyone, I think I'll pass on the "willing to die for" bit. "Willing to be made somewhat uncomfortable for" is okay.

Love is the highest impulse in Life, and it is the source of all Life. It is the highest intelligence and wisdom, put into action. It is the giver of meaning and the heart of all useful purpose. It is that which recognizes in the Other the same that is recognized in Self...the most intimate awareness of complete unity and shared meaning and value on every level. Love says "There is only One of us here. You are that One, and so am I, and so are all others. Together we are far greater than the sum of our apparently separate identities. Together we are magnificence. Apart, we wait only to rediscover that we are One and inseparable, united by Love."

Or were you talking about Hollywood romance? :-)

To think that Love can arise only as an emotional/biological response to another specific human being is naive. That's just a fragment of what Love is, but it can be a very nice fragment if handled wisely.

A bright elusive butterfly
Like a red, red rose/nose
Like a melody that's sweetly sung in tune
Where you find it
A golden ring
Not a Summer romance, or the kiss that follows the dance
A many splended thing
A sunburnt country

if "LOVE" is just B.S. we are in a heck of a fix!@
these definaitions from the onl line dictionery seem to lack something:
1 entry found for philia.-philia--suff.

   1. Tendency toward: hemophilia.
   2. Abnormal attraction to: necrophilia.

[New Latin, from Greek -phili : -philos, -phile + -i, -ia.]

i think they missed the point on this one...

A chemical reaction in the brain necessary for the continuation of the species.
or;

Sexual intercourse began
In nineteen sixty three
(Which was rather late for me) -
Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban
And the Beatles first LP.

Up till then there'd only been
A sort of bargaining,
A wrangle for a ring,
A shame that started at sixteen
And spread to everything

Then all at once the quarrel sank:
Everyone felt the same,
And every life became
A brilliant breaking of the bank
A quite unlosable game.

So life was never better than
In nineteen sixty-three
(Though just too late for me) -
Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban
And the Beatles first LP

by
Philip Larkin

And if you're lucky, after the brain chemicals disperse and real life returns from insanity you'll have a relationship that feels like;

"A brilliant breaking of the bank
A quite unlosable game."

Love is …

Love is feeling cold in the back of vans
Love is a fanclub with only two fans
Love is walking holding paintstained hands
Love is

Love is fish and chips on winter nights
Love is blankets full of strange delights
Love is when you don't put out the light
Love is

Love is presents in Christmas shops
Love is when you're feeling Top of the Pops
Love is what happens when the music stops
Love is

Love is white panties lying all forlorn
Love is a pink nightdress still slightly warm
Love is when you have to leave at dawn
Love is

Love is you and love is me
Love is a prison and love is free
Love's what's there when you're away from me
Love is

Some definitions from the classical Greek--

agape: unconditional love; usually used in a theological context (usually Christian)

philia: love between friends; amiability

storge: parental affection; love of parents for children

eros: sexual love usually driven by physical attraction.

Remember that these definitions were heavily culturally dependant--they can be used to amplify the word "love" as used in English, but are encapsulated within it, but do not substitute for it.

The way the word is used today seems to be context sensitive--I think it best to ask the person what he or she means by it. . .

So, what do *you* mean when you say love?

I felt physical pain once, I loved a man so much. He wasn't particularly interested in me. My romances tend to be one sided. I remember, sometimes it hurt, when I thought of him.
I see him every now and then. He's married to another lady. I can't say it bothers me. It doesn't hurt when I think about him anymore.

John's mention of unrequieted reminds me of a great song about first love:

The Saturday Boy (Billy Bragg)

I'll never forget the first day I met her
That September morning was clear and fresh
The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes
And the way she rubbed herself
Against the edge of my desk
She became a magic mystery to me
And we'd sit together in double
History twice a week
And some days we'd walk the same way home
And it's surprising how quick
A little rain can clear the streets
We dreamed of her and compared our dreams
But that was all that I ever tasted
She lied to me with her body you see
I lied to myself 'bout the chances I'd wasted

The times we were close
Were far and few between
In the darkness at the dances in the school canteen
Did she close her eyes like I did
As we held each other tight
And la la la la la la la la means I love you

She danced with me and I still hold that memory
Soft and sweet
And I stare up at her window
As I walk down her street
But I never made the first team,
I just made the first team laugh
And she never came to the phone
She was always in the bath
I had to look in the dictionary
To find out the meaning of unrequited
While she was giving herself for free
At a party to which I was never invited

I never understood my failings then
And I hide my humble hopes now
Thinking back she made us want her
A girl not old enough to shave her legs

Little Hawk - Thank you. I have written out your very eloquent and very true definition of Love into my book of readings and quotes, so that I can read it over again.

One of my favourite poems, that has had pride of place for some years in my little book of quotes, is the poem by Leo Marks, which to me conveys that same essence you speak of: a positive, powerful, eternal interconnectedness between every one and every thing, so much so that they are One. That, to me, is Love.

The life that I have
Is all that I have,
And the life that I have is yours.
The love that I have
Of the life that I have
Is yours, and yours, and yours.
A sleep I shall have,
A rest I shall have,
Yet death will be but a pause,
For the peace of my years
In the long, green grass
Will be yours, and yours, and yours.

Ooh, and I must add this very well-known definition of love, which shows just what can happen when that essence is put into action:

'Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.'

I once read a very challenging suggestion: To read this regularly, and to substitute your own name every time the word 'love' appears in the text, check it against yourself and make any necessary adjustments ! Oohh....

I dunno how to define it, but here are a number of good reasons for doing it, borrowed from another Blogger:

Reasons to Love

Because other people don't.

Because if you don't, others won't.

Because people do die without it.

Because it makes you feel good to love someone.

Because it makes others feel good, too.

Because the children are watching.

Because they're not.

Because you know what it's like feeling unloved.

Because you don't want to know what that feels like.

Because it can stop an argument.

Because it can heal the deepest wound.

Because it is the most wonderful magic in existence.

Because others have loved you.

Because you are worthy of being loved.

Because others are worthy of your love.

Because you love yourself and wish to share.

Because it is a sacred gift that money cannot buy.

Because it lives forever, even beyond death.

Just because.

A

...if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

...But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Mmmmmm, such wonderfully loving inspirations! Here's another that I found on a box of Celestial Seasonings Herbal Tea ...

To love for the sake of being loved is human. To love for the sake of Loving is angelic".

Last night I found these words of Rev Martin Luther King at the link Don posted on the thread "Prophetic Words". I really like them, and they fit in so well here ... (emphasis mine)

When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak response. I am speaking of that force which all of the great religions have seen as the supreme unifying principle of life. Love is somehow the key that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality. This Hindu-Moslem-Christian-Jewish-Buddhist belief about ultimate reality is beautifully summed up in the first epistle of Saint John:

Let us love one another; for love is God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. If we love one another God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Let us hope that this spirit will become the order of the day. We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate. History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate.

As Arnold Toynbee says : "Love is the ultimate force that makes for the saving choice of life and good against the damning choice of death and evil. Therefore the first hope in our inventory must be the hope that love is going to have the last word."

I hope so.

Just because a noun exists doesn't mean the thing named exists. There is no such THING as "love."

When a person says "I love you," they merely mean "You're making me happy." This is not a good basis for a lasting relationship. For a relationship to last, there must be mutual helping and mutual enjoyment of one another's company.

The love that people, usually male, sing about in the pop songs is the steadfast, absolute devotion that a mother has for her baby. No adult has the right to that.

Remember Barry Manilow's song "Oh, Mandy"? You could change it to "Oh Mommie" and it would make perfect sense. Blaeh!

So, pimple, forget love. Change your name to something that doesn't say "I'm not worth bothering with," and try forming some relationships with a rational basis.

pimpleonthenoseoftheuniverse, here's some ideas that I've watched work very well for lots of people ... including myself.

I've heard it said (by people I consider to be much wiser than myself) that those who are not yet capable of truly loving themselves cannot love anyone or anything else. Love starts within.

I've also heard that a great way to get started at loving oneself (which unfortunately most of us learn NOT to do very early in life) is to practice first becoming aware of, then "deleting" and changing any and all negative/unloving thoughts about oneself. Using affirmations is WONDERFUL for this!

Once you've become the master of your own mind and thought-patterns, and learned to re-structure them in a way that serves you instead of smashes you, you'll find yourself becoming a happier, healthier, more loving and accepting person of everyone around you too. And you'll notice you've started attracting loving people into your life for a change, because "like attracts like". The ones interested in hating and fighting and abusing will not be interested in you once you stop "abusing" yourself.

I kinda like freckleonthenoseoftheuniverse ... or maybe driedchocolatespotonthelipoftheuniverse ...

I love you whether or not you love me
I love you even if you think that I don't
Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you, but I don't mind
Why should I mind, Why should I mind
What is love anyway?
Does anybody love anybody anyway?
Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear
Never worry never be sad
The answer is they cannot love this much nobody can
This is why I don't mind you doubting
And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be
The door always must be left unlocked
To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you
And not to spend the time just doubting
What is love anyway?
Does anybody love anybody anyway?

Plaisir d'amour

Your eyes taste mine
I saw the life in them shine.
my dance is new
watching the path to you
A door is wide
To open and come down in side
I wait alone watching that path of stone

Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment:
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.
Your eyes are dark
I taste the strength in your heart
My long hair knows
Where your sweet garden grows

My mind in thine
Our valleys and rivers entwine
Your curving smile
Tells me to sip a while

My wild heart yearns
The heat in your blinding sun burns
I taste your skin
And all your life within
Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment:
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.

A gypsy song
singing your milk in my mind
our loves entwine
Aching to sip your wine
Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment:
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.

My robes of rose
Wash through your rivers and snows
Your moonlit wine drenches my song of time

Plaisir d'amour
Ne dure qu'un moment:
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.

Once there was a princess, who vowed to marry the man who brought her a blue rose.

One clever suitor procured a white rose and dyed it blue. The princess admired the rose, when a bee flew into the room. It flew into the rose, and died from the poisonous fumes of the dye.
"That" said the princess, "was not a blue rose."

Her second suitor had a blue rose painted on a porcelain cup.
"It's lovely," the princess said, "But it's a cup, not a rose."

One day the young man the princess loved arrived with a white rose.
"What a lovely blue rose," the princess said.
"It's a white rose," her courtiers said.
"Oh no," said the princess. Can't you see it! It's a blue rose!"
"Yes," the courtiers agreed, "It does have a blueish tinge. I see it now."
I read the story when I was a child, and I don't remember the name of hte book. But it strikes me as the perfect definition of love.

The "Grádh/Gaol" explanation tuik on new meanin the next mairnin. Oor choir rehearsals were held on the mainland, an Ah wis livin on an island then. I better read between the lines, in case I need it when I'm older
Now this mountain I must climb, feels like the world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds I see love shine, it keeps me warm as life grows colder

I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've travelled so far to change this lonely life
I want to know what love is, I want you to show me
I want to feel what love is, I know you can show me

Love is a challenge, love is a test
Love is the balance of all that you love best
There's love of the moment, and love for all time
There's love beyond all reason or rhyme
The whole song can be streamed in RealAudio from her website. Give it a listen -- it's a goodun, I thinks.

So if you're sorry, there's no Love Story? That doesn't sound right to me. When I need to apologize to someone, I do. What's the alternative -- expecting others to be mind-readers because I love them and vice versa? Not apologizing at all if I've said or done something hurtful?

Sorry, I just don't see how that would benefit a relationship, or make me into more loving person.

s6k, I wasn't trying to "fight" you at all! It's just that ever since I first read that book/watched the movie over 30 years ago, I've always thought that quote was ... well ... a big heap of doodoo.   And it is, for me anyway.

Pretty song, though! And I like Ride of the Valkyres too. Let's meet for a cyber-lunch ok? ANd I'm sorry you found my words antagonizing ... but please don't misunderstand.

Just because I've apologized doesn't mean I don't love you!

Hahahahahaha!!
for the record i agree with you, if that was all love meant, well, it wouldnt be that great... i love you... that means i dont have to say sorry!
So if i call someone a very rude name, then tell them i love them, does that mean i dont have to say im sorry!!
:S

boggles my mind but anyway... i stick by my original thought, which was... love is love

Someone gave my mother season tickets to the opera.
She went with my sister, or me, or one of her friends. Dad didn't care for opera, and they were both perfectly happy if he spent the evening at home with his dog and his histories, and she went off to enjoy the pleasures of Verdi and Puccini.
Then, one night, mother couldn't find anyone to go with. She told dad she was going by herself, and, when he expressed reservations, she told him that she had gotten to know two gentlemen who had the seats behind her, and she was certain that they would see her to her car.
Dad announced that he was taking mother to the opera.
My father sat through Donizetti's "Elixir of Love", to protect mother from two potential roue's. She was, at the time, 58, and she looked it. Dad was three years older, but it hadn't occurred to him that men might not find the woman he married attractive.
Mother's two friends didn't find women attractive. Fortunately, they didn't find dad attractive either.
Dad's description of the opera included the line, "And the balcony was too high for a John Wilkes Booth leap, so I was forced to endure."
The only thing that would have saved the performance for him was if two of the singers had a sword fight. Then dad could have critiqued the fencing. There are no swordfights in "Elixir of Love".
My parents didn't have the happiest marriage in the world, but my father sat through an opera, with no fencing, to protect my mother from two gay men, because he thought she was still the very beautiful lady he married. I think that has a lot to do with love.

I liked that, thanks.

heres a little something from David Gates, fantastic lyrics and such a lovely song. i can send this to anyone that would like a copy on MP3, its beautiful.

The skies are not as blue when you're not with me
The stars they never seem to shine as bright
And the hours crack like days across the ages
And a year or two pass by with every night
It makes me know if i should ever leave this world before you do
When you follow you must promise, cross your heart and promise to

Find me...look hard, and dont stop, I'll be waiting 'till then
Dont sleep, and dont eat 'till I'm back, back in your arms again
I dont wanna have to spend all my forever without you.
Just knowing that your out there somewhere too.
So darlin...please I'm begging you on bended knee...
Find me...

I've tried to tell this world how much i love you.
But they dont understand how deep it goes.
And i can't even find the words to tell you
So I'm the only one who really knows.
And though we have our times together, I am always wanting more
So if we get separated wont you do just like before and

Find me...look hard and dont stop, I'll be waiting 'till then
Dont sleep, and dont eat 'till I'm back, back in your arms again
Through a hundred million faces you will see me shinning through.
'Cause I'll glow when you come close , I always do.
So darlin' please im begging you on bended knee..
We can share our love through all eternity
'Cause with you is all i ever wanna be......
Find me

more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail

it is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe

is deeper than the sea

love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive

it is most sane and sunly

Think i'm going for a walk now
i feel a little unsteady
i don't want nobody to follow me, except maybe you

i could make you happy, you know
if you weren't already
i could do a lot of things, and i do

To tell you the truth i prefer the worst of you
too bad you had to have a better half
she's not really my type
but i think you two are forever
and i hate to say it but you're perfect together

so f**k you, and your untouchable face
f**k you, for existing in the first place
and who am i that i should be vying for your touch
who am i, bet you can't even tell me that much

2:30 in the morning
and my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon rubbing elbows with the moon
safe haven of the sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
radio is counting down the top 20 country songs

out on the porch the fly strip is waving like a flag in the wind
you know i really don't look forward to seeing you again soon.

you look like a photograph of yourself taken from far far away
i won't know what to do, i won't know what to say

i see you and i'm so perplexed, what was i thinking
what will i think of next
where can i hide?
in the back room there's a lamp that hangs over the pool table
and when the fan is on it swings gently side to side
there's a changing constellation of balls as we are playing
i see orion and say nothing
the only thing i can think of saying
is f**k you... and your untouchable face
f**k you, for existing in the first place
f**k you...

I would die for the woman I love......

I Knew a Woman

I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
Of her choice virtues only gods should speak,
Or English poets who grew up on Greek
(I'd have them sing in chorus, cheek to cheek.)

How well her wishes went! She stroked my chin,
She taught me Turn, and Counter-turn, and stand;
She taught me Touch, that undulant white skin:
I nibbled meekly from her proffered hand;
She was the sickle; I, poor I, the rake,
Coming behind her for her pretty sake
(But what prodigious mowing did we make.)

Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose
(She moved in circles, and those circles moved.)

Let seed be grass, and grass turn into hay:
I'm martyr to a motion not my own;
What's freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways.)

AT that hour when all things have repose,
O lonely watcher of the skies,
Do you hear the night wind and the sighs
Of harps playing unto Love to unclose
The pale gates of sunrise?

When all things repose do you alone
Awake to hear the sweet harps play
To Love before him on his way,
And the night wind answering to antiphon
Till night is overgone?

Play on, invisible harps, unto Love,
Whose way in heaven is aglow
At that hour when soft lights come and go,
Soft sweet music in the air above
And in the earth below.

Love is when one is willing do things harmful to one's own interest for another's ( presumed) happiness.

Stephen Crane

In the Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter – bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

A bit of pedantry here: What we call love is often only infatuation. And sometimes the distinction is confusing. A song I wrote kind of typifies this idea:

Ten Thousand Tomorrows

Long ago you were all the world to me
From here to horizon, far as I could see
But time- it moved on, leaving you behind
Ten thousand tomorrows you've been out of my mind.
Once I really loved you. I loved you a lot
Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?

Forgotten the way you sat in a chair
Forgotten your smile and the scent of your hair
Don't even recall the touch of your hand
Forgotten it all- it's not what I planned.
Once I really loved you. Just when did I stop?
Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?

I open this morning's paper and there is your face
Next to some strangers, each one in its place
Yesterday you died- imagine my shock
Once I really loved you. Why have I forgot?
Once I really loved you...

I submit I didn't really love him.

And here is a review of what looks to be a very interesting book on the subject.

Not to slight the mystics around here, but what we experience as emotions, perhaps even all of reality, is the result of chemical processes inside our brains.

CXVI

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no, it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempest and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error, and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor man ever loved.

THE twilight turns from amethyst
To deep and deeper blue,
The lamp fills with a pale green glow
The trees of the avenue.

The old piano plays an air,
Sedate and slow and gay;
She bends upon the yellow keys,
Her head inclines this way.

Shy thoughts and grave wide eyes and hands
That wander as they list--
The twilight turns to darker blue
With lights of amethyst.

Why is just a bit not enough? Why do i cut myself off from people who would love me, by going for someone who doesnt really want or need me? Why does someone so passionate frighten me? Will I ever have someone to love again? Someone I can trust?

And why am I feeling this way when I'm meant to be old enough to know better?

For romantic love to happen, you have ready, willing, and able to go all the way into the soul of the person, down to the bone; and you have to allow that person to get all the way into you. Interestingly, the hardest part is not loving another that way, but believing you're truly lovable in your innermost core and thus allowing someone to get all the way in to love you that way.

Love is the perception of unity. It is the awareness that "We are One". All that is good, kind, and beneficial flows from that.

Accordingly, Love can end war, end poverty, end injustice, end violence, end crime, and save the World.

This are some quotes from an excellent book I've been reading recently:

***

"What the world generally refers to as love is an intense emotional condition, combining physical attraction, possessiveness, control, addiction, eroticism, and novelty. It's usually fragile and fluctuating, waxing and waning with varying conditions. When frustrated, this emotion often reveals an underlying anger or dependency that it had masked. That love can turn to hate is a common perception, but here, an addictive sentimentality is likely what's being spoken about, rather than Love; there probably never was actual love in such a relationship, for Hate stems from Pride, not Love.

Love is unconditional, unchanging, and permanent. It doesn't fluctuate---its source isn't dependent on external factors. Loving is a state of being. It's a forgiving, nurturing, and supportive way of relating to the world.

Love isn't intellectual and doesn't proceed from the mind. Love emanates from the heart.

Reason only deals with particulars, whereas Love deals with entireties.

Love takes no position, and thus is global, rising above separation. It's then possible to be "one with another", for there are no longer any barriers. Love is therefore inclusive, and expands the sense of self progressively. Love focuses on the goodness of life in all its expressions and augments that which is positive. It dissolves negativity by recontextualizing it, rather than by attacking it.

This is the level of true happiness..."

***

To those words, I might add that in this life I have only seen such love fully demonstrated and realized in fewer individuals than I can count on the fingers of one hand. I've seen it partially realized in many good people. It is quite comparable to the kind of love a good mother instinctively feels toward her small child...only instead of being extended JUST to that child exclusively, it goes out equally toward absolutely everyone...every living being...regardless of their flaws or their individual nature. It expects nothing, demands nothing, gives everything. Such is the Love that God has for all of Creation. Such is the Love that Life has for all living beings.

Such love is attainable. Those few who attain it are said to be "enlightened", which is a good description, because they are filled with light. In the presence of light there can be no darkness.

In romantic love as this society thinks of it, there is usually a good deal of darkness (mixed with some light)...and a great deal of need and desire. That which sees itself as incomplete is in need and desire, and expects that it can get what it needs or wants, from somebody else. This is an unfortunate illusion, but one that has most people in its control for their whole lives. They call that illusion "love", and write books, plays, movies, and songs about it. It's very dramatic, full of highs and lows, so it makes for a good book or movie. Entire industries depend on this illusion for their livelihood.

An example of actual Love in action is the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Another such example is the life of Mother Teresa. Others: the life of Jesus or Buddha or Baha'Ullah (the prophet of the Baha'i religion).

Love is seeing the other AS yourself, and behaving accordingly...because in truth there IS no other. There is only One of us here. One masquerading as many. That is the foundation of all the holy teachings.

Love will never invade another country. Love will never execute or imprison. Love will not torture. Love will not persuade by force or rule by fear. Love will cure illness rather than attacking only the outer symptoms of illness...by filling whatever lack there was that showed itself as the illness in the first place. Love will establish equality, not protect and perpetuate elitism. Love will recognize that human rights spring from an eternal divine source inside every human being, not from the temporal authority of some government or church or bureaucracy. Love will find meaning in the beautiful heart of Life where the loveless find only victory, fame, vengeance or profit.

Love can save the World.

Love is accepting others as themselves and not wishing to change them.

It is knowing that, whatever the circumstances and however long you might have together you know that that would be preferable to not having that person in your life.

It is being aware that your are two separate individuals but that being together brings a joy that illuminates all asects of your life, even if sometimes you might not agree on all aspects of that life.

I don't think it's worth spending too much time worrying about whether or nor you are "in love" with someone or looking for signs as to whether or not someone is "in love" with you. There's a world of difference between being "in love with" someone and just simply *loving* them. Love is traditionally portrayed as the blindfolded archer, causing people to "fall in love." If you can become "in love", you can just as easily become "out of love".

*Loving* happens without blindfolds. It is the contents of the less showy lead casket in the "Merchant of Venice" that I quoted earlier in this thread: "Who chooses me must give and hazard all he hath." Therein lies the prize !

o - how do you know if you're in love?

Well, I think it's maybe too early for me to tell, but after a couple of months with new bloke I found myself kneeling on his bathroom floor scrubbing vomit from the lino after the poor boy had just boked, and I thought to myself "blimey, he's even lovely when he's sick". And I'd miss him if he wasn't in my life. And I'm a nice girlfriend for taking such good care of him.

(By the way, this love thing is the same mood that has previously had me heartbroken, devastated and torn in two when i realised that love isn't enough, ever. That's just some romantic construct fabricated to sell movies and books and really bad songs. One has to keep a sense of proportion and pragmatism, even when one is deeply in love ;-)

Dear Potaotu...Daylia is right. I think you need to get a new name. A woman reading that is going to go yuck before she ever meets you. It doesn't sound like a name you would respectfully call someone else, so why call yourself that? No one should be given a name like that, whether by themselves or others. How about just a regular first name, like Jim or Mark or Juan? Or a nickname like Tex? mg

Excerpts from Kahlil Gibran's 'On Love' in "THE PROPHET"

"Then said Almitra, 'Speak to us of Love.'

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:

When love beckons to you follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep....

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips."

"Nothing you could say could tear me away from my guy (my guy)
Nothing you could do, 'cause I'm stuck like glue to my guy (my
guy)
I'm sticking to my guy like a stamp to a letter
Like birds of a feather, we stick together
I'm tellin' you from the start
I can't be torn apart from my guy

Nothing you could do could make me untrue to my guy (my guy)
Nothing you could buy could make me tell a lie to my guy (my
guy)
I gave my guy my word of honour to be faithful, and I'm gonna
You best be believing I won't be deceiving my guy

As a matter of opinion I think he's tops
My opinion is he's the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste, to be exact
He's my ideal, as a matter of fact"...

Just received a "what is love?' email from my sister-in-law.
Supposedly said by little kids, I think these comments were made up by an adult. I think the survey of little kids is bullshit, but maybe that's just me.
Most of them are pretty mushy but these I thought were good:

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening
presents and listen.

If you want to learn to love better you should start with someone who you hate.

You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it.
But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.

I will try to look at this as if this question was being asked within a musical thread in a forum about folk songs:

Love is what most pop songs are about because, being a universal feeling, it is the topic most easily SOLD to the most people by those in charge of the music business.

Folk songs, on the other hand, are often topical and about fairly specific geographical places, and also many various eras and times. It would not be easy to SELL those songs to an entire modern nation's people because many of those people don't live where the tales told in the songs are relevant. I.E. lumberjack songs from the USA would not likely be in the songlists of cowboys unless they did the hard work necessary to become receptive to those songs.

Only those people interested in history and the big graphic tales, take the time and make the efforts necessary to appreciate the actions therein.

A good tune makes it all the better---maybe even easy to dance to.

I give it a TEN !!

Love Is love
that wakes in the night
and holds two hands
trembling in fright.

Love is love
that whispers kind words
when the darkness is screaming
in herds like spring birds.

Love is there
when I wake in the night
stroking my thoughts
and holding me tight.

Love is love
when there's nobody near
to hold on to the soul
and wipe away one small tear.

Love is love
always there for me
if I wake in the darkness
trying to see.

Morticia read one of Kahlil Gibran's poem's at Micca and mine's wedding last month!

"Love one and other, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each others cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one and other of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together but not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the Oak tree and the Cypress grow not in each other's shadow."

the primer and testament,

shot into our blood and brain like vaccine or vitamins

Because our day of time, of hours --- and the clock-hand turns,

closes the circle upon us; and black timeless nitght

sucks us in like quicksand, receives us totally ---

without a raincheck or a parachute, a key to heaven or the last long look

I need love more than ever now . . . I need your love,

I need love more than hope or money, wisdome or a drink

Because slow negative death withers the world and only yes

can turn the tide

Because love has your face and body . . . and your hands are tender

and your mouth is sweet ---- and God has made no other eyes like yours...."

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Our narrowest veins to flush,
We waited for the flash
Of morning's levelled gun,

But morning let us pass,
And, day by day, relief
Outgrows his nervous laugh,
Grows credulous of peace,

As mile by mile is seen
No trespasser's reproach,
And love's best glasses reach
No fields but are his own.

Love is blind
Love is cruel
Love is hurtful
And never full
Love will come
Love will go
Love is something
No one knows

If you say you love
I will feel fulfilled
If you say you want
I will stand by you
If you say forever
Forever it should be
But nothing last forever
I was blind
I did not see.

You left me for another
'I love you' to her sounds real
But you loved me also
From the distance
It seemed was meant the deal
Should I miss the one who was so close
Love is with me still
No as now it's with another
I LOVE YOU this time is REAL
