Majored in English. My university didn't have minors per se, but most of my electives were in philosophy.

I'd rather have by house destroyed to make way for a new bypass than pursue advanced coursework in either field. But I'd love to work toward a MFA in ceramics and sculpture if I had the time and money to do so.

English Literature, with minors in drama, theology, library science, and philosophy. That's the BA (I screwed around a lot).

Library and Information Science. That's the MS.

English, but a writing concentration. That's the half-done-and-going-nowhere MA.

I may be the only one on Mudcat who has ever taken an honors-level course in Byzantine History (two semesters, no less).

If I weren't in English I probably would have been a History major.

I would have loved to be in experimental or theoretical physics, or perhaps astrophysics. My mathematical eptitude ain't, though.

Honours English, and I was lucky -- I didn't go to university till I was 48, so I appreciated it more than I would have when I was very young. The most exhilarating 4 years of my life, even when my friends' children said things like, "Mrs. *** please don't tell my mum I smoke!"

I think I'm the only Theology major around this joint, although I see that Rapaire had a minor in it. My minor was Philosophy, which I didn't start to understand until I was 50. I also put in enough time for a major in German and a minor in English. That qualified me to work as an investigator for Uncle Sam for 25 years.

And, would you believe that this all took only 30 years to achieve? (Even more amazing is the fact that the first degree is the one that has netted the most income over the course of those thirty years)

Majored in History, minored in Mathematics. Detoured for a year in the College of Education thinking I would become a high school math teacher, but the kids scared me and the professors in the College of Ed were the very worst I have ever encountered at any institution of learning, bar none. Isn't it ironic?

I have a BA in Chemistry.

It enabled me to qualify as a Petroleum Products Analyst when I entered the Army.

I worked allmost a year as a Junior Chemist improving a sticky paste made from recycled rubber and Gisonite.

Then I became an Addictions Counselor (requirements were "an 8th grade education and 6 months clean and sober).

Went back to school (using the GI Bill) and majored in Community Counseling Psychology. I've been in the addictions or mental health field ever since.

and too FEW facts in your head can prevent you from knowing what you're thinking about..

Bill... I think that most of us who correspond on this forum (with a few exception),Don't do so to collect "brownie points",but because we "feel" strongly about some topic or another.   Its impossible for any of us to know all the facts about these issues, but that "straight from the heart" feeling, compells us to make our views known ...

AKe:

I would submit that it is not the number of facts, but the substance of them and the weight they are granted. Having a lively intelligence which is forced to gather its facts from direct observation tends to increase the certainty, which is why people seem to get duller going through some schoolings. Most important, observation provides a clearer sense of relative importance, while academics frequently wander off into lala land when it comes to sorting out what is important and why versus what is not.

I know people at both ends of the spectrum...some that have multiple doctorates that are fascinating and also folks who quit school at the age of 12 who are equally as fascinating and interesting. Then there are those who are college educated who are borish to match those who sit in front of the television all day...both equally uninteresting IMHO....I think it's in the indiviual and where your personal tasts lie as to who is interesting and who is not......leaving very little to the education or lack thereof.

Chemistry - graduated '64. I learned far more banjo than chemistry at university. Masters in computer studies '93. I would have loved to have done that originally, had I known then what I know now - but Aberystwyth only had one computer and a huge queue to use it. I don't know what I'd pick these days - most useful subjects are tedious, while enjoyable subjects would probably get the enjoyment quickly destroyed.
Cheers
