Lox, the derivation of "blog" is simply that it's a shortened form of "weblog."

Much as I used to call mushrooms "shrooms" -- which my Brit boyfriend thought was weird, though I later discovered that term was in common usage among users of the psychedelic varieties.

Been looking through to see if someone provided an explanation of "BLOG" and couldn't find one - apologies if I overlooked it, but here it is as I undestand it.

Blog ---> looks like ---> Biog.

Biog is short for Biography.

One I've heard a lot, over the past few years is
"craptastic."   Meaning, is not obvious, is "amazingly crappy."

But I think the field of psychology could use more terms for its sub-areas of study:

"ohsittology"   - the study of sudden strong negative emotional responses

"priogotry" - racism, sexism, or other prejudice expressed in especially obnoxious fasion or by especially obnoxious people

Uncle Dave O, harking back to high school days, you may have heard these:

"bluefish" - past tense of "blowfish"

"blice" - plural of "blouse"

"spice" - plural of "spice"

"kleenices" - plural of "Kleenex"

Interesting that you've often seen "e-dress" or "edress," Cluin.   I've been using it for about 10 years and never once seen anyone else use it.
Your experience seems more normal, though, since the term follows naturally from all the other "e-" neologisms (etrade, etail, email, e-commerce).

Another I've made up pertains to a condition my cat regularly gets in summertime, when the fleas get really active. (It can be controlled with flea collars and, if necessary, shots from the vet, but I've never been able to prevent it completely.) Fleas bite, then the cat scratches the bites and gets a skin irritation and scabs from scratching them. There's an actual veterinary medical term for this - some sort of contact dermatitis - but my way of referring to it is:

"Secondary flea-bitis."

I (as far as I know) made up and am still using the term "e-dress" as a shorter and easier term for "email address" than "email addy."
It still hasn't caught on, apparently, but I can't quite understand why, when I continually run across other, similar terms such as "e-tail" (electronic retail) and "e-commerce."

That's my term, an' I'm stickin' to it!

Open Mike asked:

isn't a piano sound board huge and weighs about a ton?

Laurel, you're referring, I think, to the frame of the piano.

The sound board would be pretty large in plan, but very thin, made out of spruce or something like that.

blathertwaddle: balderdash, nonsense, rubbish, vain and empty talk.

bilgeroar: see "blathertwaddle".

filch-ranger: a bothersome but essentially quite trivial pest (like my dachshund when he is barking at something that is 3 miles away)

Ream-nosed Romflombler: an exceedingly rare bird, so rare in fact that no one has seen it yet.

Glebe: Another rare variety of bird. Includers the Swanson's Glebe, the Ruffed Glebe, the Great Northern Glebe, the Speckled Glebe, the Whistling Glebe, the Western Glebe, the Grey Glebe, the Golfer's Glebe, the Pestilent Glebe, the Red-headed Glebe, the Downy Glebe, the Forest Glebe, the Praire Glebe, the Florida Glebe, the Common Albanian Glebe, the Peckerson's Glebe, the Arborial Glebe, the Wandering Glebe, the Bald Glebe, the Yellow-Bellied Glebe, the Giant Glebe, the Mute Glebe, the Bishop's Glebe, the Variegated Glebe, the Stalking Glebe, the Foxglove Glebe, the Maundering Glebe, the Barred Glebe, the Incontinent Glebe, the Lesser Glebe, and last, but.....well, just last, I guess.....the Least Glebe!

"Testiculate" is my favourite. It means to gesticulate while talking bollocks.

"Grismal" is a nice mix of "grim" and "dismal". Hull on a rainly day perhaps?

"Diagony" is desperation suffered by someone trying to walk quickly on a crowded pavement.

A friend of my mom's came up with "Fubb" some 30-40yrs. back. It means a person who loves an animal. Not the mindless idiocy of Disney, assigning human characteristics to them; or saying you love animals in the aggregate. This means someone who doesn'tnecessarily like animals or the idea of "pets", but has been drawn in to the "support" circle of a particular, individual animal. This person recognizes the limitations of the particular animal, learns over time benavioral signals of the creature, and respects the "personality"(? animal-ity?) and individual intelligence of that being. That is a "Fubb".

I think there are some fubbs in this cafe.
