I think that the "Grey Funnel Line" verse which "went missing" was probably the 3rd one in the DT version as it's often left out of songbooks and recordings - what a pity as It's probably the most significant verse in the song.

Still, Cyril's had several whole songs which have been lost and found. When he used to host his weekly west country radio programme, he tried to write a new song for each show - often on topical subjects - some of these got mislaid. I believe that "In the sidings now" (About the Beeching railway cuts) was given back to Cyril by someone who'd recorded it at the time.

The verses above are almost verbatim from The Cyril Tawney Songbook. He has 'Fumbling for change....' - and (Scotch) whisky rather than (Irish) whiskey.

I've known that "missing" verse for nearly 30 years, so I'd think its omission was a mistake on the part of the DT transcriber. How close are the DT and lyrics in this thread to Cyril's recording? I haven't heard him sing it for many years, and can no longer remember what, of the text as I recall it (which differs in some particulars from what we already have) is his, and what later changes made by others.

I have a recording of Cyril singing this, including the "extra" verse, using fumbling rather than searching for change in the first & last verses.

When he launched his Navy Cuts CD at Whitby he did mention how a missing verse got recovered for the Grey Funnel Line, perhaps something similar happened with this song.

It's a great song, thanks for posting it - one of my friends sings it without the extra verse, & changed a tad so the person in bed is not a female.

She was heading off to work one horrible Monday & sang it to the blokes digging a hole in the road after they'd made a remark about Mondays nor something. They loved it but the citizens on their way to work pretended it wasn't happening.

Rank included a verse not given in the DT, and his text is, I think, more accurate. It's one of those songs that has been passed around quite a lot in a relatively short space of time, and we could probably do with an attributed set from the horse's mouth.
