Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Dave Bryant Date: 14 May 03 - 08:20 AM I think that the "Grey Funnel Line" verse which "went missing" was probably the 3rd one in the DT version as it's often left out of songbooks and recordings - what a pity as It's probably the most significant verse in the song. Still, Cyril's had several whole songs which have been lost and found. When he used to host his weekly west country radio programme, he tried to write a new song for each show - often on topical subjects - some of these got mislaid. I believe that "In the sidings now" (About the Beeching railway cuts) was given back to Cyril by someone who'd recorded it at the time. |
Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Schantieman Date: 14 May 03 - 07:22 AM The verses above are almost verbatim from The Cyril Tawney Songbook. He has 'Fumbling for change....' - and (Scotch) whisky rather than (Irish) whiskey. Steve |
Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 13 May 03 - 02:42 PM I've known that "missing" verse for nearly 30 years, so I'd think its omission was a mistake on the part of the DT transcriber. How close are the DT and lyrics in this thread to Cyril's recording? I haven't heard him sing it for many years, and can no longer remember what, of the text as I recall it (which differs in some particulars from what we already have) is his, and what later changes made by others. |
Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: gnomad Date: 13 May 03 - 02:33 PM I have a recording of Cyril singing this, including the "extra" verse, using fumbling rather than searching for change in the first & last verses. When he launched his Navy Cuts CD at Whitby he did mention how a missing verse got recovered for the Grey Funnel Line, perhaps something similar happened with this song. |

Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 13 May 03 - 09:14 AM It's a great song, thanks for posting it - one of my friends sings it without the extra verse, & changed a tad so the person in bed is not a female. She was heading off to work one horrible Monday & sang it to the blokes digging a hole in the road after they'd made a remark about Mondays nor something. They loved it but the citizens on their way to work pretended it wasn't happening. sandra |
Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Gaffer Date: 13 May 03 - 07:54 AM This is not from the horse's mouth but from the groom's ear - Ive heard Cyril sing all Rank's verses Gaffer |
Subject: RE: Too soon to out of me bed From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 12 May 03 - 07:57 PM Rank included a verse not given in the DT, and his text is, I think, more accurate. It's one of those songs that has been passed around quite a lot in a relatively short space of time, and we could probably do with an attributed set from the horse's mouth. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ON A MONDAY MORNING (Cyril Tawney) From: Rank Date: 12 May 03 - 04:12 PM ON A MONDAY MORNING Cyril Tawney ^^^ Too soon to be out of my bed, To soon to be back at this bus queue caper, Or searching for change for my picture paper, On a Monday morning. Wrong end of the week for a smile, Wrong end of the day for being civil, There's many a Saint would be a devil, On a Monday morning. Where is the weekend now? Where is the Whiskey and beer I tasted? Gone the same way as the pay I wasted, On a Monday morning. If only the birds would booze, If only the sun was a party giver, If I could just lend someone else my liver, On a Monday morning. My lover she lies asleep, My lover is warm and her heart is mellow. I'd trade you the world just to share her pillow, On a Monday morning. Too soon to be out of my bed, To soon to be back at this bus queue caper, Or searching for change for my picture paper, On a Monday morning. |
