Just moved, so I don't have my records unpacked to transcribe, but the song title is on one of the early Ian and Sylvia recordings (fine Canadian pair who later split up by divorce). Anyway, their Royal Canal song describes the prison environment. I'm not sure if it is Irish or not...

It sounds like The Old Triangle. Also done by the Dubliners and many others. The Royal Canal is/was in Dublin.

The Royal Canal is STILL in Dublin. The song was written by Irish playwright Brendan Behan, and was I believe part of his first play, The Quare Fellow. Here is a link to info about the author.
