Subject: stone circles
From: GUEST,fietje

hi, im looking for a song, "stone circles"
lyrics:

Nobody is an island, there is no way you can break free,
Nobody is an island, there's no way you can be cut off by sea,
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.

(chorus)
And it seems to me that we are standing stones,
There's no way that we can ever be on our own,
And even if at times it seems we're all alone,
We're in stone circles,
Marking time, as standing stones.

The circle stands forever, there is no angle there to chip or break,
The circle stands forever, theres no straight lines to show a slight
mistake.
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.

(chorus)
You mustn't break the circle, there's no easy way to be released,
You mustn't break the circle, and if we stand together we'll find peace,
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hands.

i only found a version with a womens chorus, the version i am looking for is sung by a single female voice. if you can help me, please contact f.a.roth@teleos-web.de
i had the song on cassette, but it was lost...

Sorcha... when can we kiss? *BK*

The only reference I found using Google:
http://www.earthchannel.org/Peace/essays.htm (scroll down about halfway)
has the lyrics as an anglo-saxon folk song.... rather less than helpful.

euphoric morning................understpood
streaching metaphors .......understood metaphors
logical realm ....understood logical
cheap indulgence...understood cheap
Sorcha.........not understood
when can we kiss.........understood... answer: never
*BK*..not underststood....

shall i write something in german that you will surely never understand? compared with explicit german, english is a kind of childrens language... they call german the organ (i mean that instrument with pip, in churches) among the languages. the language of poets and thinkers...
so if you need to make fun of other people... right on....
you will never speak german as well as i speak english

Maybe you should read the posts to your question again Fietje! No-one has been rude to you, only helpful and humorous. Not all the replies where directed at you.
Hope you find out who composed the song you seek.
Respectfully
Alba

Yes Fietje, Thomas often writes like that. A Rhymer is a poet or songwriter. Sorcha is the other member's name to whom the invitation to kiss was made.
Best wishes,
keith.

fietje! I love the words to the song you want, and I am sure that you are much smarter than me (though that is not much of a challenge), and I am glad you have come to the mudcat cafe. I did not mean to be rude, and I will do everything I can to make your visits here more pleasant. Sorry for the misunderstanding... Peace, Love, and Celestial Stone Cerimonies! ttr

Ah, then we both know as much as each other, fietje!

[And about Thomas the Rhymer's posts, don't worry, he is not making fun of you. He is a poet (=rhymer) and uses rather flowery language. His second post was an apology to you.

One of his remarks, about kissing, was made not to you, but to another poster, Sorcha.]

Perhaps you could post to that site and ask for more information? It sounds to me like a recently-composed piece (rather than anglo-saxon), perhaps even composed by the person who posted it?

well. i think i understood thomas now... forgive me/thank you all, but i had the feeling someone was making jokes with me... its not easy to understand all those sophisticated facettes of a language which isnt your own... yknow..you will never _really_ understand a foreign language completely... all those fine nuances... hatd to explain... its the fact that one is able to speak and write , but never will be able to really understand minute differences/shapes of what a native speaker is able to exptess..... so it must have been a bit frustrating for thomas to neet someone like me who is not able to folloe his thoughts... hope i was able to express what i mean...

I'd say it is inconceivable that this is "an anglo-saxon folk song". Not even in an extremely free translation.

in the process of rototilling circles to plant in

It's called stone circles. By Anne Lister in a group of two called Anonyma. I can't remember the other ladies name.

Gee, I'm embarrassed that we haven't been able to come up with an answer to this question until today. Anne Lister has been a wonderful presence here at Mudcat, and I've really enjoyed listening to her music. The song is indeed by Anne Lister, and it's on her wonderful A Twist in the Story CD. There's a YouTube recording here:The song seems to be a favorite with high school choral groups. You can find several high school performances on YouTube. Here's a nice one:

Here's my transcription from Anne's recording:

STONE CIRCLES
(Anne Lister)

Nobody is an island, there's no way you can cut free;
Nobody is an island, there's no way you can be cut off by sea;
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.

CHORUS
And it seems to me that we are standing stones;
There's no way that we can ever be on our own;
And even if at times it seems that we are all alone,
We're in stone circles,
Marking time, as standing stones.

Nobody's an outsider, there's no way you can cut loose;
Nobody's an outsider, there's always some way to pay your dues;
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.
CHORUS

The circle stands forever, there's no angle there to chip or break;
The circle stands forever, there's no straight line to show a slight mistake;
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.
CHORUS

The wind blows from the hillside, but we stand firm and we do not bend;
The wind blows from the hillside, the circle is a pan with no hand [pan with no handle????]
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.
CHORUS

You mustn't break the circle, there's no easy way to be released;
You mustn't break the circle, and if we stand together we'll find peace;
And everything I do touches you,
And everything I am, you hold in your hand.
CHORUS

What a lovely song, Anne!

-Joe-

Yes, indeed, it's my song. Although my family does have Anglo-Saxon antecedents, if you go far enough back into history, so I suppose it might be considered ...no, no, that's silly. And it was originally recorded by Anonyma (which is me with Mary McLaughlin) on our album "Burnt Feathers" for Fellside, back in 1986. It has been sung by a number of choirs as it is available as a choral piece from Santa Monica music, and I re-recorded it on my album "A Twist in the Story" in 2008 with Jo Freya adding harmonies.

Thank you, Joe, for your kind words.
If anyone is interested in my various activities, I've been quiet musically for a few years as I've just completed a PhD, all about a medieval Arthurian story called "Jaufre", written for a king of Aragon, and about telling it as a story to modern audiences (in English). I have a new album in progress, which has been delayed by my studies and also by the sad illness and subsequent loss of my good friend and recording engineer. Just started work on it again, and I'll be sure to inform the 'Cat when it's available.

Anne
