I *have* looked everywhere else - WHAT were the animals on the milestone cards? I remember snail=25, turtle=50, what=75, maybe a rabbit=100, and I think a swallow=200? You guys are my last hope...

haven't played MB in ages...
but on my version, the cards are:

25 = SNAIL
50 = DUCK
75 = BUTTERFLY
100 = RABBIT/HARE
200 = BIRD/SWALLOW

That's what I had as well. I loved that game and went through three decks over the years. For some reason, I kept the score cards of most of the games we played. It's great fun to look back at them as I did recently and remember who I knew and what I was doing thirty years ago.

And what greater joy is there than looking into the stricken eyes of your opponent and crying Coup Fourree ?

LOL! I had forgotten all about Mille Bournes!! Loved it. Yes, it was a hare. Lost to the ravages of time like so many others!

It has been a while but i remember playing. I must have been too intent on winning - can't remember any animals at all.

I don't remember animals either. Suppose there is a difference between editions?

The American version of Mille Bornes was put out by Milton Bradley, and definitely did not have animals...at least, not the ones I had. I can't remember when I first played it, but I do remember that when I bought it for my stepson in the early 90's it was a different edition than the one I'd first played. Now if only I could find my old SORRY! game, with the "11" card that had so many instructions on it, it looked like a Dr. Bronner's soap label.

Aloha,
Mark

Played it endlessly in the summer when my friend and I were about 11 or 12. Yeah, now I remember a hare in there somewhere.

I'd forgotten about that game. I played it some about thirty-three years ago. I found it very hard to learn. On the instructions, they invited people to contact the company if any questions. I was tempted to write a note saying only "How do you play Mille Bournes?"

Still do. PLay it with my daughter many times a year. One of the few games I can still beat her at.

Oh, and yes it has the animals. First played it back in the mid-70s with the guys in my hood; Have been told the newer versions aren't as cool but never got a new one -- found another used one at a 2nd hand shop which was virtually unplayed and swapped out the cards when mine got too worn out.

I was in the high school chess club, but as a way to switch gears and act as an ice breaker we used to begin the afternoon with a game of mille bournes. It was a pretty good strategy game. I wish I could remember how to play chess as well as I remember mille bournes!

Yup, played Mille Bornes - still have the game. 45 years ago or so also played the older version. I was going to say it was called "Mileage", but I think "Touring" sounds just as likely.

Anyone else play Farm Lotto as a child?

Still have the game somewhere at home, played it for hours with the kids. I even had a computer version of it, not sure if I still do. The computer version let you play solo against the computer. If I still have it, I will try to make it available.

THe American game was definitely called "Touring" and featured GO cards, MPH cards and assorted breakdown cards such as "Flat Tire" and others. I loved playing it as a kid and the box had a greenish tone to it as well as the deck, although the printed side of the cards was black and white. I never heard of Mille Bornes til much later and my first thought (being American) was that they had copied our Touring game in Europe!

Wild -- the version I had was definitely made by Parker Brothers, and had both French and English on the cards. Maybe it was the Canadian version? And it was called Mille Bornes.

I haven't thought about it for years. This was a family favorite on car trips. Now I wonder where the cards are. Probably somewhere in a box at my dad's. Ours (US) was Mille Bornes as well. I have completely forgotten if I ever noticed the animals.

Ah right, ah right, now that there's a thread about this game I can ask a question that has troubled me for ages. This game has always been on the periphery of my playing and I have only tried it once, when visiting a friend. And he didn't know the answer to my question.

And the question? How in hell do you pronounce the name of the game?

I used to play it when I was younger. A friend had a set of the cards. If I remember correctly the name Mille Brnes translates to Milestones.

AHA!!!!

Turns out that "Touring" was the inspiration for Mille Bornes." This from a game geek website: "Touring" was originally published in 1906 by the Wallie Dorr Company, and was picked up by Parker Brothers in 1925. If the mechanics sound familiar, it is the inspiration for the game "Mille Bornes," which has since replaced it. The action card types are slightly different between the two, and "Mille Bornes" adds the "protective" cards, e.g. Emergency Vehicle which allows you to ignore speed limits.

On that site I also found the very set we had which was published in 1947......Note the green coloration I mentioned in my previous post......Geez, I DO feel old...........

Wow, this turned out to be fun, and thanks, aha, butterfly, I had thought maybe libellule, whatever that is in English, because it was remembering the hirondelle (swallow) that I remembered that it was the 200. The version I now have still has the words in English and French, we play in French (Je roule!) but the pix are of the kinds of roads you'd go those speeds on (what they think you should drive 200 kph on is pretty flat and rural), and the Limite de Vitesse and Fin de Limite signs are confusing. Dragonfly! That's it in English. Thanks, y'all! Play nicely, now!

I knew I had to be wrong. It was always Milly Born to me.

Don't feel too bad, Spaw. I remember filching bits of parchment from the monks to make playing cards...

I lost the cards years ago, but I still play every day while I'm driving. It's much more exciting than the card game. If somebody cuts me off in traffic, I speed up and weave in and out of lanes until I can cut them off. Then I yell "KooFooRay on You, Monsieur!"

LOL, leprechaun.

We had idiomatic mispronunciations of the french terms. Root Beer Suckers for Roue de Secours. Rolaids for Rollez. And so forth.
