Tim,

The only song I know that mentions a red petticoat is "Schule Agra" (aka "Walk, My Love" and "Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier". It might be on the data base, I didn't check. but here it is:

SHULE AGRA

I WISH I WERE ON YONDER HILL,
IT'S THERE I'D SIT AND WEEP MY FILL,
TILL MY TEARS COULD TURN A MILL
IS GO DETU MAVOUR NIN SLAN*
(PROUNOUNCED--ISH GO DAY TOO MA VOUR NYEEN SLAWN)

WALK, WALK, WALK MY LOVE
WALK WITH GRACE AND SOFTLY MOVE
WALK THROUGH THAT DOOR AND GIVE ME JOY
MY OWN ONE, MY SOFT SPOKEN BOY

I'LL SELL MY RACK, I'LL SELL MY REEL
I'LL SELL MY CLOTH AND SPINNING WHEEL,
TO BUY MY LOVE A SWORD OF STEEL
ISH GO DAY TOO MA VOUR NYEEN SLAWN

WALK, WALK, WALK MY LOVE
WALK WITH GRACE AND SOFTLY MOVE
WALK THROUGH THAT DOOR AND GIVE ME JOY
MY OWN ONE, MY SOFT SPOKEN BOY

I'LL DYE MY PETTICOAT I'LL DYE IT RED
AND 'ROUND THE WORLD I'LL BEG FOR BREAD
UNTIL MY PARENTS SHALL WISH ME DEAD
ISH GO DAY TOO MA VOUR NYEEN SLAWN...

NOW MY LOVE TO FRANCE HAS GONE
AND LEFT ME HERE TO WEEP ALONE
ALL MY SALT TEARS SHALL TURN TO STONE
ISH GO DAY TOO MA VOUR NYEEN SLAWN...

OH GOD I WISH, BUT THAT'S ALL VAIN
NO ONE TO HEAR AS I COMPLAIN,
OH MOTHER, SEND HE IS NOT SLAIN
ISH GO DAY TOO MA VOUR NYEEN SLAWN...

* IS GO DE TU MA VOUR NIN SLAN
''MAY YOU WALK SAFELY, MY BELOVED''

Hope it helps.

Slainte

Rick

A fine young singer from Prince Edward Island, now living in Halifax, Nova Scotia and co-hosting an early morning Breakfast Television show just released her debut CD entitled "Red Petticoat". Her name is Liz Rigney, and she does a helluva job on the title track as well as many other traditional maritime folk tunes. She is joined in this album by several top-notch Nova Scotian musicians. Well worth the listen. Dan
