what do you recommend I do/go within 5 hours train journey from Amsterdam 23 Dec-2 Jan. I know about the museums. am thinking folk music and special interest/activity breaks. If I was in the British Isles I'd be interested in winter schools like Boghill Centre and Frankie Kennedy school in Ireland, or a BTCV conservation working holiday.

also can anybody tell me whether permits are required for busking in Amsterdam? elsewhere in the Netherlands?

PS don't limit response to residential breaks ... if you know a pub session you can recommend that too ...I like most folk/international music

thank you Eddie ... but where is everyone else?

Greek music? Moroccan/Algerian? other African? eastern European? etc...?

don't forget, I'm on my own at that time so residential or day workshops are of interest (bearing in mind my language limitations)- I mentioned practical conservation work, other activities beside music could be language learning; yoga/tai chi, etc; massage, all sorts of arts and crafts - and I did say up to about 5 hours train journey from the Dam would be considered

Brussels too far... (about 2 and a half hours from Amsterdam)? I'm pretty familar with most folk, blues, world and other music going on there.

bearing exceptional events I prefer smaller places than Bruxelles (though I will be in Amsterdam)--- but others resident in or visiting the area at this period may be interested.

Hi weary traveller. Just so happens that I looked at this site and can give you info on Amsterdam scene. I am gigging there at Mulligans Friday and Sat 20th and 21st also a running a session on Sun 22nd. No good at that time for you but I am also running an open session on 26th as a hangover cure. Also New Years eve night. It is with an incredible Belgian guitarist, Philip Masure. I am a flute and whistle player as well as fiddle and singer. Check out the mulligans site and our own sites. www.folk.be/coyne and folk.be/masure. we play trad irish music and song with a few contemporary and own compositions too.
If you want to know more.Leave a massage through the site.I have been touring Europe, especially Holland and belgium for ten years so I can point you in a few directions.
Cheers for now
Terry Coyne

I used to go to a pub / club / bar called 'Folk Fairport' in Amsterdam, that was a few years back. There was all manner of folkish stuff on.

In Antwerp I used to go to a pub / club / bar called MusicDos (I think that's foreign for Music Box). An excellent place with a super atmosphere.

Good luck!

John

In Groningen, there's an Irish pub with sessions on Sundays (from about 5PM) and Wednesdays. About 2 and a half hours from Amsterdam by train. The pub is: O Ceallaigh's, Gedempte Kattendiep 13.
