As an Irishman living in Scotland and in the spirit of the current rip of what did the ??? do for us I'd like to twist the topic towards the Scots.

And may I be the first to venture .... William Topaz MacGonagall

They emigrated to Canada, and made it the delightful place it is today, where every public occasion includes bagpipes, all parents want their children to go to university, and every adult knows he or she should have a retirement savings plan although all spare money (like there is such a thing) is spent on whisky and holidays.

Shame on the Scots posting here for failing to mention
those merry old economists Malthus and Adam Smith.
Lest we forget one whom migrated to our shores and ,for better and worse ,put these economists' principles to work whether he knew it or not.....Andrew Carnegie; the first Man of Steel.

Well Dead Horse, We'll have to explain who Logie baird was. It is not generally know in the USA that Logie Baird made the first working Television.

And Kendall, I don't want to be nitpicking (Or maybe I do) But It was the Pneumatic Tyre that Lord Dunlop invented. I don't know who invented the solid rubber tyre.

And don't forget Harry Lauder.

Bert, Dunlop did >b/b> invent the pneumatic tire. He "rediscovered" it.

And as far as I know he was never ennobled.

But I agree, let's not forget Harry Lauder !

Did naebody mention bannocks, or crowthie, or clootie dumplings, or Irn Bru? And I'm trying my best to forget Harry whatsisface. I know I'll never forgive him for encouraging the rest of the world to think that we're all miserly skinflints in threadbare pic-nic rugs grasping at saxpences that go bang in the nicht.....

We (and I use the term loosely here) are kind-hearted, generous to a fault (if that were posible) and dispensers of open-handed hospitality - all of it reasonably priced.
