There is a product named 'Odoban' (look it up)..it works! Professional kennels use it, I've used it, and it completely destroys the odors. It costs only about $10.00 a gallon, and you can dillute it, spray it into the air, or in your case, directly into the case(I'd go full strength)..and the odor is gone....RIGHT NOW!

Just in the case? You lucky devil!
Our cat sprayed on my guitar, which was leaning against the wall, and managed to get a plentiful sufficiency through the soundhole.
It took about six months before I could bear to play it.

I think it was an aerosol of eucalyptus 'pillow-spray' that took the final (to my nose) traces away. You wouldn't believe the things that I sprayed in there! Good job it isn't an expensive instrument.
The guitar is now stored high. But it was once "higher.'

Neutered cats usually spray because they are feeling the tension of an interloper in their territory.

And if you have a pet cougar, then you can use the hardshell case for an acoustic double bass as his coffin....you can stuff him in quite nicely prior to rigor mortis setting in.

Which brings to mind a story I heard. There was a guy in New York City whose dog died. He discovered that the vet would dispose of the body, but only for a hefty fee, so he got an old suitcase he didn't want and stuffed the dog inside...went down in the elevator from his 16th floor highrise apartment...put the suitcase down by the bus stop...turned his back on it for a brief minute while "buying the paper", turned back around and....PRESTO!

Suitcase gone. Problem solved. ;-)

OVERFLOWING CAT BOX BLUES
(Jane Robinson)

First I must mention the lack of attention:
Here I am wasting away. (it's awful)
Why did you get me if you won't pet me
Seventeen hours a day? I ask you
What is this crap when I sit on your lap?
I expect a devoted masseuse;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me
Overflowin' cat box blues.

Now I have grown gaunt from privation and want
But catfood I don't deign to take (how gauche)
But I could connive to completely revive
When you give-a me half of your steak (done rare)
I'll sit and I'll beg with my claws in your leg
Until you concede what I'm due;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me..
Overflowin' cat box blues.

Hey, I don't deserve this lousy door service:
I'm always on the wrong side. You know this
Prancing and yowling, moaning and growling
Works, but it hurts a cat's pride. So I'll just
Claw and I'll spray till the door rots away
And leaves me a hole to pass through;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me...
Overflowin' cat box blues.

Say, whenever I go for the bed or the sofa
You always shoo me away. (How rude!)
You say I get hair on the fabric of chairs
That offends your pristine derriere. Well now if
I can't repose where I want, I suppose, I'll
Throw up where you most like to snooze;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me..
Overflowin' cat box blues.

Well, you ought to know when a cat's got to go
That you owe her a spotless commode. (Let's hear it)
Why should I squat on the same soggy spot
Right on top of three weeks worth of load? Now really!
If I were a grouch I would piss on the couch,
But instead I have pissed in your shoe;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me...
Overflowin' cat box blues.

Since you have spayed me nobody's laid me -
I'm all neurotic and tense - it's true now -
Kneading and mewing is all that I'm doing
And not wooing toms on the fence. Don't think that
I've become bitter because I can't litter
No, but I've lost a few screws;
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me
Overflowin' cat box blues.
I got those `Nobody loves me, nobody feeds me
Overflowin' cat box blues.

No more indoor cats for me. I inherited my last one from a relative and the creature has finally shuffled off this mortal coil. I've had this happen with a pile of laundry waiting to go in the washer, with an open cornet case and in a guest closet. God may have put cats on the earth, but the devil infiltrated their heads and infested their urinary tracts.

When I travel, I no longer have to worry about who's going to feed Beelzebub. I don't have cat hair on my clothes and furniture, I have no damage from scratching and I have zero veterinary bills. I don't spend money on cat food and kitty litter. This is a definite improvement in my situation.

By the way, that's a great title for a song...

I hope the cat was at least neutered. I work in a vet's office--I get peed on by intact tomcats all the time. It didn't bother me too much until I got a new car and now I'm afraid it will rub off.

My dog thinks it's great, though, when I come home reeking of other people's animals. I'm a cat person at heart but Mom won't live with litterboxes again so I have a dog (a spitz--clean, stubborn, willful, and independent, not entirely unlike a cat).

Yes! I can never fathom why people go on and on about cats, when dogs do a hundred times the property damage, the filthy beasts! They have no scruples whatsoever. They're loud, clumsy, neurotic, intefering, smelly, incontinent extroverts with a penchant for rolling in manure and carrion. They are frequently paranoid and sometimes even dangerous. They are lascivious, low-minded, and vile. They lack subtlety, and don't know when it's time to get lost.

Hmmm...sounds like I'm describing the patrons of most of the seedier bars in Orillia...

Cats rule cos cats are cool and they ain't no fools!

Charley N.,
Re drowning cats and "well-behaved" dogs, let me say that my mom and dad's dog tried to eat my entire guitar case a few years ago.  She was in that chew-everything-in-sight stage, and she chewed my glasses, chewed and ruined my dad's hearing aid, ate several garden hoses, and chewed the heck out of my cloth-covered hard shell guitar case.  (It's a darn good thing I never left the guitar unguarded on a lawn chair for a few minutes!)

Mr. Noble,

Sir, that's very funny indeed! Our little celtic band used to play AAMH regularly, and it was often satirized/parodied/lampooned in practice.

I wonder if there's something about it (and other songs) which makes it more accessible to parody. Thoughts anyone?

I'm glad someone raised the question of what might happen to the guitar finish after you have applied Fabreeze, nitric acid, and boron laced N-fuel coolant. Some of those solutions might bleach whatever part of the guitar they come in contact with.

In terms of appropriate (or inappropriate songs) one can't do better (or worse) than this one by Anon.(copy & repaste into WORD/TIMES/12):

I'm Gonna Drown Me Cat
ANON
(From Nova Scotian singer-songwriter Vince Morash – 11/11/95 Tune English Traditional: "All Around My Hat")

C--------G--------C-----F/C------G-----G7
I'm gonna drown me cat, or-r smother it with a pillow,
----------C---G----G7-C------F-C-----D------G
It's pissed all a-round me flat, and it's gonna have to pay;
----G7---------C--------F----------------G
But I'm not in-to cruelty, so when I'm done dis-secting it,
---C-----G------C-------F-G-G7C
I'm gonna send the pieces to the S–PCA.

So fare ye well, wee puss, ye've piddled once too often,
I'm off to buy a dog, who's good and well behaved;
Ye never discriminated, the place where ye urinated,
So "Rest in Pee" shall be the epitaph on yer grave.

To get ye potty trained, I've struggled till me strength,
Just like yer bladder drained – over walls, rugs and chairs;
Yer metabolism's booming, ye produce more than ye're consuming,
It's really quite beyond belief – so-o, pussy, say yer prayers.

I'm gonna buy a bat, made of the finest willow,
I'll put ye out with that, end me troubles with one blow;
But I pity poor St. Peter, for when he comes to greet ye,
Ye'll wait till he's not looking, then ye'll piss through his halo!

Of course I'd never sing this ditty, especially while I'm sitting here with a long-haired calico in my lap. She doesn't even know I'm familar with such macabre songs...YIKES!!!

You're lucky mate. I have two beautiful British Blues - one of which/whom likes to give me a wake-up call when he thinks it's time for me to get up, by weeing very deliberately on my bed. Never does it when I'm not there - only when I'm in it. Can't work him out. I must have the most washed bedding in the country. The vet has given some tabs to try to eliminate the problem. We shall see. He also once weed in my accordion case so I have to tell my musically minded friends who call, to shut their cases immediately. You must admit, they do resemble litter trays - in a way!

Little Hawk,

Yup, I considered that, but felt it worth the risk. I figured the extra moisture was temporary, and perhaps no worse than a rainy camping trip. I had tried other solutions to no avail, and thought that fuming would be the only safe way of getting the bleech to the instrument. The guitar btw, was an old Harmony Sovereign, which I now keep set up for lap-style, since as a beater it has been replaced by a Simon and Patrick.

Fabreeze (sp?) works with alot of things, but I wonder if there's anything in it to react with instrument finishes. Anyone know?

A professional carpet and upholstery shampoo service could probably do the cat case case (that is, the case of the cat pissing in the case) without any trauma to the case lining. Not being a cat lover, though my kids have one, had it been my case, that case might have become a coffin for wee kitty. Case closed.

Peace, Mooh.

Actually, Little Hawk's suggestion has a lot of merit.

Since it is difficult to get cat smell out of anuthing, borrow the skunk, since as most folks know, tomato juice works wonder with skunk smell.

Once the skunk smell is gone, you will probably find that the cat smell is gone as well.

That sounds like a good solution, Mooh, but I would be a bit worried about how the humidity rising off the very hot water might affect the guitar....I guess it worked out okay for you. It should certainly work well on a smelly guitar case, and no danger of serious damage there.

After buying a pawnshop horror guitar which smelled so bad of nicotine and stale booze that it couldn't be kept in the house, I suspended it over the bathtub filled with very hot water and alot of bleech in order to fume the stench away. It worked, but then the bleech left a faint scent which I simple aired away, followed by the baking soda treatment with the guitar in a case.

Smell be gone.

Peace, Mooh.

They usely chuckle, pat me on my head and say something like "Sure, Dad.   I am sure you will", and then they walk off saying to themselves "Isn't he cute?". I usually grab the maul and go split wood for several days just to get rid of the frustration. Don't these creatures understand how dangerous I am????????????

Are you sozzled again, John?

Okay, Raggytash - you've had all the boring, sensible advice, let's go for the WSSBA brand of advice...

Situation: The cat has peed in your guitar case. The case now stinks of cat pee, and the cat is unrepentant.

1. You may deduce that the cat has it in for you. Try to find out why. Admittedly, this may not be easy...cats are complex creatures.

2. Immediately take all other instrument cases and valuable absorbent objects and place them in a locked storage area. A spiteful cat will not stop at peeing in just one guitar case.

3. You need to do something about the smell...now!

4. Procure a live skunk. There are various ways of doing this. Remember that skunks are nocturnal, and plan accordingly.

5. Hold skunk with rear end pointing at open guitar case. Slap skunk across the face. The skunk will now spray your guitar case copiously. You may now release the skunk back into the wilds. You will discover that there is no longer much, if any, perceivable smell of cat urine coming from the guitar case.

6. If you can STILL detect some cat smell from the case, procure a second skunk and repeat steps 4 & 5 above.

7. If skunks are not readily available, an adult billy goat will work fairly well too, although getting him inside the case is difficult, and you will have to keep him inside it for at least 1 hour.

8. All in all, I recommend the skunk technique. It's less rigorous. Billy goats are cantankerous bastards at the best of times.

Good luck!

I can recommend lemongrass oil to keep Spike away. It works well enough with our Flossie. It's not such a bad small for a guitar case anyway. Well no doubt see you in Whitby, if not before. Don't bring the cat!

Kat.............if you can't see the tongue in cheek in that post you need to get a checkup. Of course it was tongue in cheek. I have had cats allowing me to share their space for all of my life. My current master is Esmerelda. She takes care of my need to keep my hands busy by insisting that I pet her in all of my waking moments. But if she pissed in my guitar case...................well.............I am a wild eyed, blood crazed, gun owner..........

(yes, katmother, that is tongue in cheek.............just in case you couldn't tell.....please don't scold me, it is so embarassing........I'll never get a date....)

Rather fond of the old feline (Spike to his mates) so sending him to the great mouse chase in the sky is not an option. I'm off down the Supermarket to get some Febreeze. Thanks for all your suggestions

Skin the cat and make a bodhran out of the hide. I hear there's a serious shortage of bodhran players out there! On a slightly more serious note, if you live in England, have you tried Dettol?

Had a TV that broke once and took it to the shop for fixing. Man asked if we had a cat. Yes. Does the cat sleep on the TV. Yes. Seems the cat would be so warm and comfy he wouldn't get up to pee, just lay there and let it dribble into the TV. Man said he had TVs with that problem all the time.

Nature's Miracle works wonders. Febreze works, but, quite honestly, I don't like ITS smell. If you throw something in the washer, use a drop (really -- only one or two drops) of anise oil.. Your item will smell of licorice when it comes out of the washer, but it's very effective on cat pee, smoke from a house fire, etc. Lemon grass oil, orange oil, and other citrus oils can be added to water to spray on furniture or instrument cases to discourage cats -- and they smell good.

ol' squeaky used to regularly wee on my hard guitar case.

i just sponged it off and the smell wasn't too untoward.

however, several years of accumulated tom cat wee must have made its way into the catches and out of 4 only one remained working, the others corroded and broke.

i was able to replace some with stronger ones from an old suitcase.

he was a funny old cat, one of the biggest anyone had seen, more like a dog in his behaviour.

besides wee-ing on my case, outside we'd sometimes see him sitting in the grid and doing his business like a 'good cat', straight down the drain!
