Ragbert, I believe this very subject has been visited recently, but I'm buggered if I can remember the thread name, or even a key word.

Do you drive a lorry with Raggytash emblazoned upon it? If so, it was me waving.

First off, kill the cat. A creature of considerable intelligence that is demonstrating this type of malice towards your instruments must not be allowed to roam the earth, and certainly cannot be allowed to breed.

Second, there are any number of products available to deal with this exact problem. Many of them are enzyme based. I have used them and they work. They also take the smell of the dead cat off your hands

A friend of mine had a cat that regularly peed in her instrument cases. He also required ear drops on a daily basis. It took my friend a while to figure out that the cat didn't like the ear drops and was peeing in open cases out of spite. This won't solve the problem of cleaning the case, but you may have ticked off your cat. Leave your cases closed. Cats are spiteful.

Agree with RichM, but if your case has a liner you might try replacing it first. I had a cat that pissed in my (in the floor) heating vent...the final solution was to sell the house!

Hello =)

Sometimes our *not so friendly* furry pals will do this sort of thing; I agree with previous posts that the cat is upset about something, try to find out what the problem may be and fix it.

In the meantime, I would use "Febreeze" (test a small patch somewhere inconspicuous in the case first to make sure no further damage will be done) if no further damage is forthcoming, "Febreeze" is reasonably priced, readily available and quite effective (lol, I don't make it or sell it, I just use it, and it works wonderfully!) - be sure though, to spray and rub in a bit for full effectiveness, there is an extra strength version, which is what I would get.

Good luck, Sincerely, Charlotte Gilmour

Febreeze only covers the smell from human noses, though, in my experience. The cat will still smell the markings and might take an opportunity to cover the Febreeze with "fresh" scent.

I agree with RichM, buy a new case and keep it closed, esp. if you cannot figure out what upset the cat enough to do that.

Mick, awfully hard to see a tongue-in-cheek there, I sure hope that was the case, though, no pun intended.

Depends on what kind of case you have. If it's plywood with "teddy-bear-fur" lining, rip the lining out and replace it. Fabric stores sell the same stuff. Use the old pieces for templates for cutting the new ones. If its one of those molded thermoplastic things like Martin & Taylor use, throw it out. The foam they are made from will have soaked up kitty's pee-pee like a sponge.

If it's a gig bag type case, you could probably stick it in the washing machine. That's what we eventually did when one of our cats decided to customise my case just before we went on holiday to Sidmouth. Maybe he wanted to make sure we didn't forget him.

We had to stick it in the corridor outside the room in the boarding house. In the sessions I could sense people backing off when I entered the room.

So I bought a new and better one. Then we tried the washing machine, and it came up a treat, no noticeable smell. So I gave the old one to my son, and he hasn't noticed anything, and his nose is much more sensitive than mine.

Febreeze is pretty good too, though it wouldn't fool a cat, and they can get competitive about stuff like that. "Anything you can do I can do better".

And the other thing is, never leave a gigbag on the floor overnight, if you've a cat.

If it's a hard case, and the cat's got at the inside, that's a hard case indeed. Re-line it? Put it in the Mudcat Auction?

Hello again,

I agree with all of the posters who advise keeping the case closed.

But, just in case you can't afford a new case right now, go ahead and try the Febreze - having used the product since it came out, I can say most definately that original offending odors are gone (if applied correctly, and on an appropriate surface, obviously mattresses and the like aren't as good candidates for the product) as far as us humans are concerned, and in case it's true and *kitty can still tell where he left his mark* leaving the case shut will solve the remainder of the problem.

Good luck, Charlotte

Onions can get rid of all sorts of smells
I have heard the chemistry explained but it couldn't hold on to it.
It certainly wasn't the smell alone swamping all others.
If it is inside try putting the sliced onion on a plate and closing the lid.
If it was banjo I would say leave the pesky thing in also. BG

You could try giving it a blast with one of those Vax type vacuum cleaners that circulates water through the fabric then sucks it straight out again.

Steam cleaning might be worth a go, and it would probably do you a world of good if you suffer from sinus problems.

There are also some spray on dry clean aerosols that might work.

It would probably be best to replace the lining with the fabric fluffy stuff as already suggested. (Or cat fur.)

If you do, use a spray on adhesive like the stuff you get for recovering pool tables. If you can't get it locally I can tell you where to find it.

If all else fails, buy a new case, line the old one with fibreglass resin and you'll have the coolest litter tray ever.

You could also train the cat to put the lid down while its using it.

Lol, I almost forgot, another thing you can try is a spray repellent (after you get rid of the odor of course, if you're able to, by whatever means you choose).

We found out quite by accident that a product called "Lassie" (indoor/outdoor repellent)works wonders, and there are other similar products that all work the same way; anyway, we found out that the cats loathe this stuff (initially you probably won't like it either) the good thing is though, that *you* won't be able to smell it for long, but the cats will, but mind you, if a cat or dog is determined enough, they'll *do their business* anywhere, but . . . for the most part, it works great, true they may just find another spot, but one has to start somewhere.

Once again =) good luck,

=)

Tough cats see that kind of thing as a challenge to be outdone.

Smelliest cat I ever knew didn't belong to us, but he used to sneak into the kitchen and use our litter tray. You knew he'd been there all right. You knew when he'd just walked through the room.

Other things to try:
Nature's Miracle, but it usually only works when the pee is fresh.
Halve and lemon, scoop it out and fill the rind with salt; leave several days.
Mothballs
Fabric softener sheets designed for a dryer--but all they do is semi cover it up.
Aresol cover-ups........must keep repeating application.
Bottom Line--train yourself to close the case.

Have you tried making a baking soda paste, rubbing it in, letting it dry, and then vaccuming it out? Also, here in the States we have a powdered stain remover called Oxy Clean that seems to work well with odours. If that doesn't work, try locking your cat in the case and mailing it to a random address in France.

A good soaking with Nature's Miracle may have saved it when the stain was fresh. Now - toss it. And keep the new case closed and upright.

I had a 30# cat named Freddie who was banned from two vets' offices for attacking. Got one right in the face after I had warned him to let me take Fred out of the carrier. Finally found one with long leather gloves and a sense of adventure. I do miss old Fred.

If you try to cover the smell, the cat will just think that you're another cat, covering up his possession markings. When toms spray, that's what they're doing (flashback to Red Dwarf where the Cat [humanoid evolved from cats] is going round the ship with an aerosol spray, going "sshhpprrrrp, that's mine... and that. sshhppprrrrrp, all that, except that bit"). Kitty is telling you that although you use it, the case is really his, he just lets you borrow it. And in case you should meet any other cats whilst out with it, he's left his calling card so that any other cat will know you belong to him.

Kitties don't really like citrus smells so try a little orange oil or lemon oil along the edge of the case, or leave some peel in there for a while. That should prevent further 'attacks' once you have de-ponged your case. I would recommend the removal and replacement method. Although there are smell removal products that are very very good, sometimes they just aren't enough.

We took our kit by car to the vet to get "done" about two months ago. On the way there it shat itself & on the way back it pee'd. Long haired cat in loose shat horror - yuk - but the vet took care of that (cat is a little shorter-haired in places).
We have found no solution for the pee-smell. We are trying to dispell it with unsympathetic magic though - crossing our eyes & quoting "damn cats" whenever entering said vehicle.
Not worked yet.....

The steam-cleaning thing can work if you get to it as soon as possible and often; it will still smell as it dries. We went from a hardwood floors house to wall-to-wall carpeting (not my choice!) and I thought we were going to have a real problem. We bought one of those quick steamer machines and it has worked really well whenever someone gets territorial or thinks the litter isn't just right. No smells and the carpet is clean. You might be able to rent a hand-held one which might work on your case, but it'd be iffy for getting all the spots.

Oh, and if follow the "final solution" offered by a couple of others, may the deceased come back and haunt you and seven generations after of your progeny.

ol' squeaky used to regularly wee on my hard guitar case.

i just sponged it off and the smell wasn't too untoward.

however, several years of accumulated tom cat wee must have made its way into the catches and out of 4 only one remained working, the others corroded and broke.

i was able to replace some with stronger ones from an old suitcase.

he was a funny old cat, one of the biggest anyone had seen, more like a dog in his behaviour.

besides wee-ing on my case, outside we'd sometimes see him sitting in the grid and doing his business like a 'good cat', straight down the drain!

Nature's Miracle works wonders. Febreze works, but, quite honestly, I don't like ITS smell. If you throw something in the washer, use a drop (really -- only one or two drops) of anise oil.. Your item will smell of licorice when it comes out of the washer, but it's very effective on cat pee, smoke from a house fire, etc. Lemon grass oil, orange oil, and other citrus oils can be added to water to spray on furniture or instrument cases to discourage cats -- and they smell good.

Had a TV that broke once and took it to the shop for fixing. Man asked if we had a cat. Yes. Does the cat sleep on the TV. Yes. Seems the cat would be so warm and comfy he wouldn't get up to pee, just lay there and let it dribble into the TV. Man said he had TVs with that problem all the time.

Are you sozzled again, John?

Okay, Raggytash - you've had all the boring, sensible advice, let's go for the WSSBA brand of advice...

Situation: The cat has peed in your guitar case. The case now stinks of cat pee, and the cat is unrepentant.

1. You may deduce that the cat has it in for you. Try to find out why. Admittedly, this may not be easy...cats are complex creatures.

2. Immediately take all other instrument cases and valuable absorbent objects and place them in a locked storage area. A spiteful cat will not stop at peeing in just one guitar case.

3. You need to do something about the smell...now!

4. Procure a live skunk. There are various ways of doing this. Remember that skunks are nocturnal, and plan accordingly.

5. Hold skunk with rear end pointing at open guitar case. Slap skunk across the face. The skunk will now spray your guitar case copiously. You may now release the skunk back into the wilds. You will discover that there is no longer much, if any, perceivable smell of cat urine coming from the guitar case.

6. If you can STILL detect some cat smell from the case, procure a second skunk and repeat steps 4 & 5 above.

7. If skunks are not readily available, an adult billy goat will work fairly well too, although getting him inside the case is difficult, and you will have to keep him inside it for at least 1 hour.

8. All in all, I recommend the skunk technique. It's less rigorous. Billy goats are cantankerous bastards at the best of times.

Good luck!

- LH

My cat like citrus smells she is always there when Im eating an orange but she doesn't like Olbas Oil (menthol,Eucaliptus type smells) I think it makes her eyes water!!!

I suggest you get a new case like others have suggested and keep it shut and out of reach from the cat.

Mick, with a name like Esmerelda I'd expect she'd have you enchanted beyond the point of even posting such tongue-in-cheek thoughts! Oh, and about that dating thing? As long as you continue to set your sites on the elusive FAIR ONE, I don't think your chances of any others are very good, however....my claws are in and I'll try not to cuff you anymore.*bg*

katjuststickingupforallcatswhotakethemselvesseriously:-), really!

Dammitall, Katdarling, you know the friggin' rules!! You MUST give the obligatory "empty your mouth of all liquids, lest you flood your sinuses" warning before posting this shit.

Yeah, she pretty well has me enchanted and is sitting in my lap giving me that "Sure, Mick, I am SOOOOOO scared" look. This look reminds me of the same look my daughters give me when I rant "I WILL RIP OFF YOUR LIPS, YOU WILL NEVER GET A DATE". They usely chuckle, pat me on my head and say something like "Sure, Dad.   I am sure you will", and then they walk off saying to themselves "Isn't he cute?". I usually grab the maul and go split wood for several days just to get rid of the frustration. Don't these creatures understand how dangerous I am????????????

After buying a pawnshop horror guitar which smelled so bad of nicotine and stale booze that it couldn't be kept in the house, I suspended it over the bathtub filled with very hot water and alot of bleech in order to fume the stench away. It worked, but then the bleech left a faint scent which I simple aired away, followed by the baking soda treatment with the guitar in a case.

Smell be gone.

Peace, Mooh.

That sounds like a good solution, Mooh, but I would be a bit worried about how the humidity rising off the very hot water might affect the guitar....I guess it worked out okay for you. It should certainly work well on a smelly guitar case, and no danger of serious damage there.
