Bummer! I saw the Who last year and they were great. Entwistle's "piano" bass playing style was unique.

John guested on Govt. Mule's 2001 release "The Deep End Vol.1", along with Jack Bruce, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Flea and a bunch of other bassists filling in for THEIR deceased bass player, Allen Woody. This could be The Ox's final recording.

Michael

We've lost a lot of pioneers lately.

I remember seeing The Who when they were "The High Numbers" and several times afterwards including the memorable Valley (Charlton Athletic FC) gig.

A very fine bass player indeed and another fine musician lost this year.

May "The Ox" R.I.P.

Sad news. Saw them at Queen Mary's College (London) in the 1960's, just as 'My Generation' hit the charts (?1966). But I can't remember much about it!

Terrible news. I saw The Who at Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival in 1966. It was the day England won the World Cup and they finished off the night by doing their devastation number on their equipment. A great loss. So long Boris the Spider. RIP Ox.

Sad news indeed.

Bad enough when Keith Moon left us, now John E. Just Pete and Rog to maybe carry on. Saw The Who at the London Arena recently and they were sensational, irreverent, loud and still meaningful. For my money one of the very best rock bands to have survived from the sixties (together of course with the Kinks).

For someone who was a Mod in the sixties The Who spoke for our generation.

A great, great bass player - a true musician, an artist of the instrument. And, apparently, a very nice man indeed.

I'm very sad.

Saw The Who at RFK Stadium in DC on the '89-90 tour. All the guitars and drums survived the show, but I believe a tambourine was dissembled, for old times' sake.

**sigh**

This from Yahoo News:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The two surviving members of veteran rock band The Who will carry on with their North American tour despite the death of the group's bassist, John Entwistle, the group said on Friday.

In a surprise announcement issued by their management, lead singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist-songwriter Pete Townshend said the tour would open on Monday at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles "as a tribute to John Entwistle and to the loss of an irreplaceable friend."
"The Entwistle family is in full support of the decision to continue and feel this is what John would have wanted," the statement added.
Entwistle's son, Christopher, added that his father "lived for music and will always live within The Who's music. This is what he would have wished, and our love goes out to the remaining band members and the entourage that makes up The Who family."

Makes me wonder -- who'd they get to fill in?

And of course: -- WHO'S NEXT?

Michael

It says in the cheap British press today that Entwhistle died in the arms of a stripper.

Only adds to the legend, so far as I'm concerned.
