Macca,

Fascinatinglly, is that a word?, the Japanese public has tried Godzilla bunch of ways and the obvious guy in the lizard is by far the prefered beast.

Me, I'm a Mothra fan myself. I even know the the little girls song,

"Ma sou lyah!"

DonMeixner.. In the Godzilla 1980 movie,Raymond Burr played - if that's the word I'm looking for - the same reporter called back from a well-earned retirement and invited to advise the US government and military about the big lizard. Presumably nobody else in the US had seen it in all the sequels since the first film.

Not that I'm complaining... much. I mean, for sheer pointlessness dressed up as deep profound and meaningful while also destroying Tokyo for the umpteenth time, try Godzilla versus Biollante. You will never feel the same about roses again. Hooo boy.

And the only reason I know anything at all about this epic is that I have a son who insists on watching the video again and again while (he says) practicing his Japanese.

Hey, speaking of Ned Kelly, Mick Jagger was perfectly awful in that movie!

I guess the more recent version of the B movie is the straight to video movie. King of these: Bruce Campbell, for the "Evil Dead" movies plus others. He's had TV roles on Hercules and Brisco County, JR., and is actually in the new Spider Man movie (take a good look at the wrestling announcer). But he's basically a B level actor.

Another one would be Jeffrey Combs, who started off in bad horror flicks like "Re-Animator," and graduated to playing recurring alien baddies in Star Trek shows, especially Deep Space Nine. A great, scenery-chewing ham (which you need for some of those rubber mask roles).

Both of these guys transcend badness, though, because they have a certain flair and personality, rather like Errol Flynn (though in different ways).

Regarding Raymond Burr and Godzilla 1980, Burr was in the original Godzilla as a news reporter. Was he also a reporter in the 1980 film?

William Bendix. Every role he played was William Bendix, and he couldn't even do that well.

I don't think Leonardo Di Caprio should be in this list. He is a first rate actor, one who can become totally the character he portrays. He's just been handed a few bad scripts and has been typecasted lately as a pretty boy. His role in the fine movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape (mentioned earlier) showcases his great acting skills.

Wow! Rip Torn??? I thought he was hysterical in "Men in Black".

Just the line "Sucks, dunnit?" left me howling...but then, I like that sort of humour with a bite, so I suppose it could have been just about anyone delivering it, and I'd have laughed.

The name is very unfortunate. I know I'll likely never forget it...but there are a thousand other bit players who's names I'll never remember, so is it really so bad?

Oh yeah - and another - Raymond Burr for a part he played in one of the worst movies ever made - Godzilla 1980 (or 85... or something.. A shared Japanese/American production. It was so badly put together even the title was forgettable) I swear he could have phoned the part in while they stood a cardboard cutout in front of the camera and it would have had more emotion in it. Come to think of it, maybe they did.

Mind you, there was a terrific schlock line in it from a US staff lieutenant who, on seeing the devastation that only a hundred foot radio-active plastic lizard could inflict on Tokyo (again) said, "That's some urban redevelopment scheme they've got there."

Cringe.........

We're running out of nominees here, and drifting into contemporary actors and actresses. As long as we're here you can add George Segal and Sylvester Stallone. As for "B" picture actors and actresses you can add George Maharis and George Montgomery. For the tough guys talking out of the corner of their mouth... George Raft wannabees, how about Steve McNally and Ralph Meeker?
Now if you want to go in the other direction, you can add your favorite "character" actors to the other thread.. making things positive instead of negative.

Fess Parker, Dean Jones, Tommy Sands, and just about anyone else who ever appeared in more than one Disney flick, with the exception of Fred MacMurray, who was considered a good actor in the '40's.

Wallace Beery, especially teamed up with either Marie Dressler or Marjorie McBride (who were probably the same person). They did great movies, though.

Tony Franciosa and James Franciscus, also the same person.

Leo G. Carroll. I saw him in Tarantula, and all I could think was "it's Topper!".

Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver). I saw him in a movie about an underground civilization - the title had something to do with mole people - He was still Ward Cleaver.

The entire cast of Superman - the TV series. I don't believe I have to point out George Reeves role in Gone With The Wind. He only had one line, but it stands out as one of the worst southern accents ever.

Joan Crawford deserves recognition for going from great actress to incredibly bad B-movie star. Remember "Trog"?

Honorable mention to William Castle for directing. In some cases, he kept many of the people mentioned in this thread working when they'd be unemployed otherwise.

Diana:

Claude Akens was a mixed bag, but he made his share of "B" pictures. How about Monster In The Closet, Manhunt For Claude Dallas,Tarantulas: the Deadly Cargo and The Kettles On Old McDonald's Farm? You could certainly put Ma and Pa Kettle in the "B" picture category.

Neville Brand was another mixed bag with a long list of cheap "B" pictures to his credit.

It seems like Dane Clark was in a lot of movies, but when I run down the list, the only titles I recognize are Action In The North Atlantic and Destination Tokyo. I think that you're right. If he was in a movie, expect him to get killed. From what I remember, he sweat real good.

YeDonne De Carlo? Whatever class she had on stage, she left there. Listen to these titles of some of her movies: Bad Girls In The Movies, Vultures, Play Dead, Silent Scream, Nocturna, Satan's Cheerleaders, Arizona Bushwhackers, Blazing Stewardesses... sound like the movies that Calvin and Hobbes always wanted to rento n video.

Someone else include Leonardo di Capri on this list... an unfair rap. What other potential Teen Fab idol would have played the retarded younger brother of Gilbert Grape? And did it so well?

Even the most mediocre actors have some good roles in them, if they get the script and the chance.

Jerry

Sometimes it's hard to separate the stinkers from the giants. Most of the big name actors of yesteryear never really acted, they just played the same role over and over again. Clark Gable always played Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn always played Katherine Hepburn, Errol Flynn always played Errol Flynn, etc, etc., and though it grieves me to say it, Humphrey Bogart always played Humphrey Bogart—typecasting, I guess. But usually that was enough. Bogart broke loose later on. He really acted in "The African Queen" and "The Caine Mutiny." Showed what he could do when he got worked up a bit.

How about those Technicolor South Sea epics where, at the last minute, the tall, handsome, bare-chested Jon Hall saved the sarong-clad Dorothy Lamour from the evil kahuna just as he was about to placate an angry Pele by tossing her into an erupting volcano? They just don't make 'em like they used to!

Mel Gibson!?? Keanu Reeves!?? My God, most of you children are far too young to have seen any really bad B-movie actors and actresses. Hell, some of you are too young to have seen a B-movie!

The term "B-movie" came from the days when going to the movies meant seeing a double-feature. There was the main attraction, which usually had the big name stars, and then the B-movie. This was low-budget with lesser known actors. It was like the B-side of a single record (are any of you old enough to remember single records?). Most of the B-movie actors and actresses were so bad and so forgettable that I've forgotten them. I can remember some of the performances, but the names are gone—for good reason. Oddly enough, though, some of the B-movies were better than the main attractions.

Tarzan movies were always main-attractions. During the Forties, they starred Johnny Weissmuller. Weissmuller got the role, not because he was an actor, but because he was an Olympic champion swimmer (five gold medals). He swam a lot and swung a lot, but other than that, all he had to do was grunt and yodel. But he was the one who invented the Tarzan yell*. When later actors played Tarzan, when they used the yell, what you heard was Weissmuller's voice dubbed in (although Carol Burnett could do a creditable job of it). Buster Crabbe was also an Olympic swimming champion. He was considered for the role of Tarzan, but was rejected in favor of Weissmuller. Crabbe did a huge number of movies, mostly Westerns, but he's probably best known for the "Buck Rogers" and "Flash Gordon" movie serials.

Ronald Reagan was mostly in there with the cowboys, but he wasn't quite up to the high acting standards set by Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, William Boyd, and Lash LaRue.

Don Firth

*Trivia:— Weissmuller had a close call in Cuba during the time of the Cuban Revolution. While playing golf, he and his friends found themselves suddenly surrounded by a group of Castro's soldiers intent on kidnapping them or worse. Thinking fast, Weissmuller immediately gave his trademark Tarzan yell. The soldiers immediately recognized it and were so delighted to meet Tarzan that they escorted the group back to a safe area.

P.S.: Uh—that was Sandy Dennis in Virginia Woolf.

And Kendall: I see that you whiled away many hours in the dark confines of a movie theater watching cowboy movies. When I was a kid, we had a theater in town that only showed cowboy movies, called the Hitching Post. All of us kids would bring our cap guns to the Saturday matinee and when the guns started blazing on screen, all the kids pulled out their cap guns and joined in. The smoke was so thick you could hardly see the screen by the time the fight was over. I ended up, of course, remembering those days in a couple of songs..

"Cowboys all were honest then, there horses all were trusty
And when they slept out in the rain, their guns never got rusty.
And when they fought, they never lost, but they never won the girl
And the buttons on the shirts they wore were simulated pearl

"And for a box top and a dime, we'd wait a month or more
For a hand-tooled belt that glowed in the dark, just like Lone Ranger wore
And the Three mile creek was four miles long,
Back when I was young
And I knew the words to every song, known to the human tongue

For the record, I agree with the assessment of the Dukes of Hazard. Not a lot of acting talent needed to make that cast with one exception....Daisy Duke!!! I loved her.
