Who rates highest in this category? You know the type...they act really badly, they get really lousy scripts which doesn't help, and their films are generally tacky and third rate. They would be forgettable if they weren't SO BAADDD.

I'll start the nominations off with Ronald Reagan.

Take it away, folks!

You're too young to know the classic b-picture actors, Little Hawk. Dullards like Keanu Reeves are major hollywood stars who weren't even alive when they made "B' pictures. But, he sure has the non-moves down pat. For me Ben Afleck is another stone face, among current "actors."

Recently, another candidate for the "B" picture bad actor Hall of Fame just passed.. John Agar. And what about Scott Brady? strongest jaw muscles on earth. You could probably put Claude Akins in there, too... in a million movies, most of them on the artistic level of the Dukes Of Hazard.

Referring to another similar thread about bad movies that you like, I was bored the other night and bought Salem's Lot on DVD at Walmart. "Starring" David Soul. Haircut actor. Was he Starsky, or Hutch? Someone joked once that John Davidson had a twenty dollar haircut on a ten cent head..

Some supporting actors who did their share of "B" pictures, who were good actors and got a small role in an occasional good movie was Ward Bond. He was always gruff and likeable. One dimensional perhaps, but an enjoyable dimension.

Jerry - Ah, yes, the Dorks of Hazard...LOL!...what a classically BAAAAD TV show that was. It could have been used as the Holy Bible for lousing acting AND scriptwriting.

So this guy Scott Brady with the mighty jaw muscles...was he in a lot of cowboy films?

Actually, I may be older than you think, but I grew up in a TV-less family, so I wasn't exposed to as much video as most people until I was 19 or 20. I missed most of those B-movies, I think. I know what you mean, though, cos I have seen a fair few of them by now.

Nope, Scott Brady was part of a pool of ganster types who talked with clenched jaws. They tended to be in George Raft-type "B" pictures. In the same pool were Steve Brodie, Steve Cochran and Dane Clark. Part of the problem of listing lousy "B" picture actors is that most of those movies never made it to television, so you had to be in the theaters in the fifties. Like me and Kendall.

There were many actresses of the same ilk.. in addition to Yvonne DeCarlo, there was Marie Windsor (who was ressurected to be in the Salem's Lot movie I just watched... anyone who wants it can have it if they are the first to e-mail me their address.. at gospelmessengers@msn.com) You could add Joan Collins to the lousy actresses along with Patricia Medina.

More lousy actors: Ricardo Montalban, Buster Crabbe (even before my time) and Richard Chamberlain.

How about John Saxon...When I think B movie I think of the "Johns" .... Wayne, Agar, and Saxon.

Pernell Roberts was Adam Cartwright.

My vote for B-movie actor would be Doug McClure. There's a kind of handsomeness that some guys have that makes their facial features so perfect that none of them stand out, and you can't remember what the guy looks like two seconds after you look away. D.McC is one of them. And he couldn't act. Troy Donohue comes to mind, too.

I disagree with the choice of Boris Karloff. He at least had some character. ANd his movies were usually entertaining.

We need women here too. Sandra Dee, Annette Funicello, Ann-Margaret before she took acting lessons.

Ah, now...I *like* Tom Arnold. No, he's not Olivier, but he delivers comedy fairly well.

Let's consider 99 percent of Jim Carey's work, however.

And for me, the absolute worst has to be Vanna White. Nothing, and I mean *nothing* was worse than the 2 minutes of commercial I sat through advertising whatever film she made some years back ("Aphrodite" or some such???). And that's just the *commercials*. Don't give up your WoF gig, Vanna.

Was he in "Pearl Harbour"? What a dumb movie that was. Ugh! Nice scene of the battleship capsizing, though...

Let me add Lorne Greene to this list, as one of the most terrible acting turkeys of all time. Hell, let's add the whole cast of Bonanza while we're at it.

How about those black and white scenes of the vicious gangster in the "Home Alone" movies...were those from an actual old gangster film? If so, what was it called, and has anyone seen it in its entirety?

The lifetime achievement award for a 'Bad Actress' in a B movie goes to Nancy Davis(later on Nancy Reagan). Give Vanna the nod for a 'Made for TV Movie'. The worst actor in a B has got to be Lon Chaney, Jr. yes? I'd say Glen Campbell, except he was in an A movie so he doesn't qualify. For a 'Made for TV Movie' the worst actor is John Stamos. Those are my nominations. If I had to choose one though Vanna White was 'so' bad I watched the whole thing in total shock. She's a nice woman and a good mother, but I 'still' can't believe the brass at the network let it go on the air. Unbelieveable! lol

Mountain Dog: The movie was Eaten Alive ( which I mercifully never saw. I read that it was Tobe Hooper's follow-up to Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Classic after classic. Gee, it sounds good to me... had Freddie Englund (later of Nightmare on Elm Street) Stuart Whitman, another candidate for one-dimensional actors, Mel Ferrer(who was known to be good in some movies) and Neville Brand... another of the "youse guys" hoodlum types with strong jaw muscles. It's available on video, in case you get nostalgic. Or nauseous.

Jeepers but I just love opinions. Mel Gibson is an awful actor: Mel Gibson is a great actor! Just opinion. And I haven't yet seen many "B" film actors yet mentioned. I've seem a lot of character actors mentioned who worked in films tho'

Ward Bond was a first rate actor who specialized in military, trail boss, or priest type rolls, a fatherly figure who was incharge. He should have been given an oscar a few times in supporting roles. The Priest in "The Quiet Man." , the regimental Sargent Major in "Fort Apache." and The CPO in "They Were Expendable" come to mind. And off the top of my head I can't recall a single "B" movie he made after 1941 or so.

Claude Aikens was primarily a stage actor who found he could work as a heavy in films so he did. If you think he was a talentless light weight watch "Inherit The Wind" again some time.

Thats true with Neville Brand as well. He was a clench jawed heavy type until some one discovered his skill at light comedy and he spent several years lamooning and laughing at himself.

Dane Clark was a solid charcter guy in war films and Noire films of the 40's and 50's. The troubled guy grasping a last chance in a lot of films. Sort of a John Garfieled understudy.

So far the only truly "B" movie actress I have seen mentioned was Diana Dors. Yvonne de Carlo was a fine stage comdeienne and a good dancer and singer.

But you have left out Lionel Atwill, Richard Carlson, Shepard Strudwick, Rhonda Fleming, John Hodiak, Tallulah Bankhead, Forrest Tucker...... I most cases the ones who were truly bad were the lead roles who were invented by the stdios because of a pretty face.

Most of the people mentioned all had a few shinning moments on film and a bunch of just OK roles. Not unlike the really fine actors and actresses who we think of as artists.

Many "B" picture actors had occasional good roles in major films. Some "stars" served their apprenticeship in "B" pictures. Charles Bronson is a good example. He played the ignorant henchman of Vincent Price in House of Wax. And, I remember the very first black and white Cinemascope movie released... it was a western with Charles Bronson as the leading man. Some "B" picture actors like John Wayne became famous Hollywood stars but with the exception of an occasional role which required a little acting, they were still extremely limited as actors. John Wayne made a living doing better John Wayne imitations than anyone else.

As for pretty heads, you could toss George Peppard the Baldwin Brothers and George Hamilton in there with the Troy Donohue and John Saxon crowd. It's not their fault that the doulbe feature was gone by the time their careers started.

And if you want to get technical about it, they really stopped making "B" picture in the 50's when the popularity of double features ended. That doesn't mean that there still aren't "B" picture actors and actresses, though.

And Kendall: I see that you whiled away many hours in the dark confines of a movie theater watching cowboy movies. When I was a kid, we had a theater in town that only showed cowboy movies, called the Hitching Post. All of us kids would bring our cap guns to the Saturday matinee and when the guns started blazing on screen, all the kids pulled out their cap guns and joined in. The smoke was so thick you could hardly see the screen by the time the fight was over. I ended up, of course, remembering those days in a couple of songs..

"Cowboys all were honest then, there horses all were trusty
And when they slept out in the rain, their guns never got rusty.
And when they fought, they never lost, but they never won the girl
And the buttons on the shirts they wore were simulated pearl

"And for a box top and a dime, we'd wait a month or more
For a hand-tooled belt that glowed in the dark, just like Lone Ranger wore
And the Three mile creek was four miles long,
Back when I was young
And I knew the words to every song, known to the human tongue

Mel Gibson!?? Keanu Reeves!?? My God, most of you children are far too young to have seen any really bad B-movie actors and actresses. Hell, some of you are too young to have seen a B-movie!

The term "B-movie" came from the days when going to the movies meant seeing a double-feature. There was the main attraction, which usually had the big name stars, and then the B-movie. This was low-budget with lesser known actors. It was like the B-side of a single record (are any of you old enough to remember single records?). Most of the B-movie actors and actresses were so bad and so forgettable that I've forgotten them. I can remember some of the performances, but the names are gone—for good reason. Oddly enough, though, some of the B-movies were better than the main attractions.

Tarzan movies were always main-attractions. During the Forties, they starred Johnny Weissmuller. Weissmuller got the role, not because he was an actor, but because he was an Olympic champion swimmer (five gold medals). He swam a lot and swung a lot, but other than that, all he had to do was grunt and yodel. But he was the one who invented the Tarzan yell*. When later actors played Tarzan, when they used the yell, what you heard was Weissmuller's voice dubbed in (although Carol Burnett could do a creditable job of it). Buster Crabbe was also an Olympic swimming champion. He was considered for the role of Tarzan, but was rejected in favor of Weissmuller. Crabbe did a huge number of movies, mostly Westerns, but he's probably best known for the "Buck Rogers" and "Flash Gordon" movie serials.

Ronald Reagan was mostly in there with the cowboys, but he wasn't quite up to the high acting standards set by Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, William Boyd, and Lash LaRue.

*Trivia:— Weissmuller had a close call in Cuba during the time of the Cuban Revolution. While playing golf, he and his friends found themselves suddenly surrounded by a group of Castro's soldiers intent on kidnapping them or worse. Thinking fast, Weissmuller immediately gave his trademark Tarzan yell. The soldiers immediately recognized it and were so delighted to meet Tarzan that they escorted the group back to a safe area.

P.S.: Uh—that was Sandy Dennis in Virginia Woolf.

Yes, Victor Mature: He once tried to join some upper crust club; they told him they didn't admit actors, and, he told them, "I'm not an actor, and I have 50 movies to prove it."

Sometimes it's hard to separate the stinkers from the giants. Most of the big name actors of yesteryear never really acted, they just played the same role over and over again. Clark Gable always played Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn always played Katherine Hepburn, Errol Flynn always played Errol Flynn, etc, etc., and though it grieves me to say it, Humphrey Bogart always played Humphrey Bogart—typecasting, I guess. But usually that was enough. Bogart broke loose later on. He really acted in "The African Queen" and "The Caine Mutiny." Showed what he could do when he got worked up a bit.

How about those Technicolor South Sea epics where, at the last minute, the tall, handsome, bare-chested Jon Hall saved the sarong-clad Dorothy Lamour from the evil kahuna just as he was about to placate an angry Pele by tossing her into an erupting volcano? They just don't make 'em like they used to!
