Everyone needs to hear this little tale. Kitty West, an excellent singer and picker, won an e-Bay auction to appear at the annual Thanksgiving Concert that Arlo Guthrie does every year at Carnegie Hall. Kitty is a regular over at a site called Tweed's Blues. Tweed got to dropping by the 'Cat and I got to dropping by Tweedsville. In any case, when Kitty found out she would have to supply her own orchestra arrangement of her original composition, Mighty Mississippi on VERY short notice.....well, it was a shock to say the least. I personally figured she was screwed. Then Tweed brought the problem here with this thread....check it out now.

Now that you have read the thread, you need to know that

IVAN DID IT !!!

With all of the time constraints and working with a song he had never heard.......IVAN GOT THE JOB DONE!!!! Kitty left this message for him over at Tweed's:

Ivan ,you are a hero. (For the rest of you who might not know what I'm talking about, Ivan B worked very hard in an extremely short amount of time to put "Mighty Mississippi" in symphony form...Wow. He saw the request for help and jumped right in.....not knowing anything about me....just that this needed to be done, and he did it. Ivan, I haven't been able to get the program open yet . When I get to NY I'll see if someone there in Arlo's crowd will get it taken care of...Thank you so very much for your generous help!!

This is one helluva' place ain't it? And Tweed's is a great place too.....The amount of support they gave Kitty was much like we see here...Good Folks there too.

Ivan, you are indeed a hero and the best of what Mudcat is about. And ain't it great how the net can work? Thanks Ivan......and the Mudcat too will have pride in our member who's "going to Carnegie Hall."

Thank you Ivan......

(hanging head and shufflin' feet back and forth....)

Aw, jeez, 'Spaw didja hafta do this? This is as embarrassing as hell....

I was just glad to have the talents needed to respond to this particular need. And, that, in a nutshell is what's great about Mudcat (and probably Tweed's too, though I'm not familiar with that site), that we have a community of diverse talents and that almost any request will get a positive response.

As far as the orchestration, it was just a simple little arrangement for strings and woodwinds. I figured I'd be till next week trying to work in the brass, etc., besides Kitty's song stands very well on its own and doesn't need a lot of embellishment to make it shine. And, yeah, if Kitty manages to get the archive open (and I've sent her another email with the individual files attached) and use the arrangement, I'll take some pride in it. But I think we can all take pride in the numerous members who rise to all sorts of occasions. Just one of the reasons I'm proud to claim Mudcat as my internet 'home.'

As a Tweedster and and occaisional Mudcat reader THANKS IVAN!!! Without getting too far into it, Kitty is local pro folk and singer-songwriter on the eastern North Carolina Capes and has a couple of CDs out. She's been in bands and a solo for decades and has a voice like an angel or sometimes like an angel who's Woody Guthrie's sister. She always works and is a single mom. This Carnegie concert is big for her.

Ya Ivan, Mz. Kitty is probably floating off the ground. She's a good one for sure and good seems to have attracted the best from diverse places. What an incredible story and a great way to use the net. We think a lot of her and are very grateful to ya for jumping in there and doing it. Hope they get a recording of the concert. She does sing like the angels.

Thanks!

We (meaning myself and all of you who in this adventure with me by association..) are in some beautiful New York town today. There's a lot o do today to bring this to THE MOMENT that we've been hiking to. It's all looking good. I just need to keep the steps orderly and make sure everything gets done that needs to be. Tomorrow morning I will meet with Kathy Swekel, the exc director of the Metropolatin Symphony and James Burton the arrangement director. I need o walk in with music scores in hand so we can go over parts and discuss whatever it is symphony director people discuss over coffee before a Carnegie gig. Bottom line here...Ivan...if you're out there..I need to speak with you asap...email, etc is okay, just so I can get all this wrapped up and ready...it's your show too now, you know... !! wow. I also want to make sure it's okay with you, that part of my intro to this song at Carnegie, will be a credit to you (where I say your name) for the arrangement.. If you're around, please post or email me...thanks.

Tweed, the archive I sent Kitty contained both the NWc (Noteworthy Composer) files which would have required a copy of NoteWorthy to print and a set of PDF files which could be printed from Adobe Acrobat Reader. Today, I sent her a Microsoft Word document with the files embedded as graphics. I've been trying to fax the score and parts to her, but I'm getting a busy signal at the fax number she sent me.

OK...I'm back...(whew..kitty is still grinning from those last few posts...)

The fax # is busy because something needs to be unplugged. I don't know what that "something" is...and since it's not my house I think I better not start trying random-unplug tests.

Let me ask you all this....do you think we can find a way for me to retrieve this info sometime tonight? The reason I ask is (well, this might be too much unwanted information, but..) I sure do need to take a bath and defragment my brain for a little bit...do you think I can take my concentration off this for an hour without a risk of dropping the bouncing musical ball..??

No...I don't think it's that....now one of the problems with turning off the computer right now to see if that indeed would make the fax work, would be that I would then lose access to computer communication... Kitty, hopefully you're getting my email messages and have my home phone number by now. I have separate lines for my fax/computer and voice, so you won't be interrupting any transmissions if you call. Course, once that fax line gets cleared, there should be no problems getting this thing to you, so a phone call's probably not needed unless you have other questions.

Aw Shucks Spaw, I'm just happy to finally jump in here. I'd buzzed through a couple times in the past but didn't get into it til just a couple weeks ago looking for words to the Mobile Line (which turned out to really be France Blues). I met so many nice people that were glad to share what they had, so I kept looking in. The Mudcat is a huge resource tool and loaded with fine human beings. (and I say that in the best Chief Dan George sort of way) Thank you all for treating the crew from Tweed's Blues and myself so nicely. It may be hard keeping them down on the farm now that they've seen how life is in the big city;~) I may have posted this picture of us before, but here we are again. That's Kitty up in the sky with diamonds, I'm in the shed in a green shirt, Rolphy's got a red guitar, Bobert's got a concertina on the ladder and the gal who made this collage is playing a harmonica off to the left. *Clicky*
