Well, our festivals been and gone. There is a bit of time between now and whatever mid-winter celebrations you choose. Anyone fancy another Mancy Moot? Dates? preferences?

Talking about Mancy - have we ever talked anout a Manx meeting? Could be great (Particularly if we start festivities on the ferry) :-) But that's for the future I guess.

In the short term I suggest White Lion again - they now do food all day (well - till 7pm anyway) Saturday and Sunday. After the sucess of having the festival there all day last Saturday I guess Geoff and Liz would be more than happy to accomodate!

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Nice idea Dave. Dates between now and Yule/Xmas/Midwinter are rapidly filling up, and for me personally the weekend of 7th, 8th, and 9th December is probably best, but if you can come up with some other definite date I will try to make it.
Love the idea of a trip to the Isle of Man - maybe next year. I seem to remember there are a few outlying 'Catters there.

Early December than. I will ask the good folk(ies!) at the Lion on Monday if 7/8/9 is OK. Watch this space;-)

Anybody else interested? I promise I won't mention yesterday's match result (Liverpool 3 Man.United 1)again! Has a general depression sunk over Manchester?

Its not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me...

Matthew Edwards that was a needlessly cruel comment, shame on you!!!! I may be up for it-as the bishop said to the actress-more details on dates please. I wouldn't mind an Isle of Man trip . Got a job their once which paid an outrageous salary and concessionary taxation . Turned it down for a third of the salary, to live in Hull. (Now to be stupid once is forgivable but twice......)

OK - we're on. 6/7/8 Dec. There are at least half a dozen of us so we can make a go of it!!! Hopefully now there is something firm more people will be interested.

The upstairs room at the White Lion is available for whenever we want to use it. Free and easy up to now. I would suggest meeting Saturday lunchtime (1-ish) and taking it from there. Just an idea - how about Afternoon singaround. Local curry shop (Or into Rusholme:-)) for a meal. Evening singaround. Get back together Sunday lunch to see who's got the stamina! Anyone fancy a Friday night session as well?

Any other ideas? Fancy dress? Unicycle workshops? I'm open to suggestions (Well most suggestions...) ;-)

Cheers

Dave

Aahhhh! The curry heaven of Rusholme. Yes, yes, yes. That is a must-do for the weekend. Saturday at the White Lion sounds great (How do I get there?), and a Friday evening session could be fun as well. How about trooping over to Harry's in Failsworth on the Sunday?

Fancy dress? Why don't we just find out what Sue vG. and Ickle are planning to wear, and then all come in identical outfits?

How about a more formal concert on Saturday giving Mudcatters who want it a longer more formal set. From 0800 to 1130 we could accomodate 10 x 20 minute sets.

On the other hand an informal singaround could be just as much fun....

Worth it to come over for Rusholme just for the curry most of the retaurants in 'curry mile' are good but my sproglet who's at Manchest Uni introduced me to the Sha Jahanwhich is one of the best meals I've had.

Yet another good idea! There is no reason why we cannot mix the two. 'Open mike' concert spots for those as wish interspersed (sp?) with singaround and music sessions. sounds like a good do to me! Well volunteered, Spot;-)

Oooo's 'and you trying to get in the air Mr DTG...It was a suggestion not an offer...It gets so a person is frightened to open ones mouth without getting volunteered.

On the other hand I would MC it if you needed me to.

What we need is commitment from people before we book the WL.

Spot, it doesn't seem that booking is needed, as Dave said that the upstairs room at the WL is available anyway. However it would be helpful to get some idea of numbers, and to invite non-'Catters to participate as well.

PS Harry, as a folk club organiser and a City fan, have you ever thought about applying for help from the Minority Rights Action Group? Next thing, you'll be telling us you're a Socialist as well!!!!

Don't worry about Spot, Matthew, he's due for his injections next week so he will be better behaved by then...;-) Besides, he's just back from a weekend in Whitby and I was trying to con him into something before he sobered up but he 'spot'ted the trick!

Good idea on the numbers. We will keep this thread open and hopefully have an idea in a week or two. The room at the 'Lion is OK for any number from 6 to 50 (but a bit crowded at the latter!) I spoke to Geoff (the landlord) last night and he said he had no plans for the room that weekend anyway.

I think there will be a few non-catters from Swinton anyway (and some closet catters as well). Please feel free to bring along anyone from your respective areas as well - the more the merrier!

Come on all you 'catters who missed the Swinton festival - catch up on some Old Tom;-)

Cheers

You can count us in. If we were going to Rusholme for a curry, it would be logical to sing at the Ducie afterwards as it is just round the corner from Curry Mile! The landlord is very obliging and neither of his customers will mind!

Ickle - further problems if you're known for spilling curry down your front, people will definately be unable to tell us apart! (I wear a lot of silk scarves - very useful for covering a multitude of spillages!)

This sounds quite interesting - a wandering meeting! White Lion Fri night / Sat Afternoon. Rusholme Sat tea-time. Ducie Saturday night. Would the Open Door be interested in Sunday afternoon or do we repair to the Lion again?

If we go for this we need to make everyone aware of the times and stick to them - or people might not find us.

Then again, perhaps that's not a bad idea...;-)

Alternativeley do we just stick with the Lion of course. I'm easy (so I'm told) Ideas? Votes? Concensus?

The Manchester Mudcat Ramble
(with profound apologies to Ewan MacColl)

The White Lion on Friday will sure be a high day,
When 'Cats sing and play music as well.
And if you are lucky, then down at the Ducie,
There'll be many fine stories to tell.
Then its Pauline's in Failsworth on Sunday,
For the ones who can get out of bed;
But I'll be trying to part with my curry,
And feeling I'd rather be dead.

Chorus: I'm a Mudcat, I'm a Mudcat, down Machester way,
I get all my pleasure the musical way.
I may be a wageslave on Monday,
But I am a singer on Sunday.

I love the idea of a peripatetic Meeting which seems to be developing. If I've understood correctly the schedule that is emerging looks something like this:
Friday evening 7 Dec Singaround at White Lion, Swinton
Saturday afternoon 8 Dec Open Mic at White Lion
Saturday teatime Curry Heaven in Rusholme
Saturday evening Music and Singing at the Ducie, Rusholme
Sunday afternoon 9 Dec Open Door at Pauline's in Failsworth

If this is correct, subject to any subsequent amendments, additions, etc etc then could some kind soul provide addresses of venues and/or directions to them.

PS Spot, were you in Whitby for the Captain Cook Festival, and if so did we meet? Some of my memories of that weekend are a little hazy!! I have been told that I was dancing to reggae at 3am on the Sunday morning!!!

I'm sorry to reduce a decent thread to such intimate detail, but Noreen has forced my hand.

From the phenomenal archive that is Mudcat, it has been easy to establish that on 11 March this year, I said to Noreen: "I just wanted to give you a big hug for believing in (name airbrushed out to protect the innocent) against the flow."

I said it by personal message, but should have told the whole world. Noreen replied in the warmest of terms, assuring me that both a pint and a hug await me in Manchester. In view of her heartbreaking memory lapse, I am glad of an opportunity to put the whole matter formally on record.

Just put me right off my Jalfrazi...;-) Good point about the discount though, MC!

On another semi-serious note. Wonder if any of the eateries have Music on and if so would they like to do an 'East meets West' do at some time? Does anyone have any contacts at any Rusholme establishments or with any Indian or Pakistani musicians? Good idea for helping the local community with cross cultural harmony possibly and may fit in nicely with the April charity concert we are hoping to achieve.

Cheers

The best place for a curry in Manchester - and, indeed, the world - is The Great Kathmandu on Burton Road, West Didsbury. Just go there & see for yourself.

This is a list of those who have expressed an interest in coming so far, so Dave and Harry can have some idea of the numbers involved:

8 Pints Bob & Sue vG
Alio
Dave the gnome
Fionn (sending hugs)
Geordie Broon
Harryoldham
JohnJ with legs covered, or uncovered?
Les/Manchester UK
Linda Kelly The artist formerly known as Ickle Dorrit
Matthew Edwards
MCFat + sproglet?
Mrs Duck, with Geoff and Ducklings(?)
Noreen present in spirit only!
Spot the Dog

PS If you are coming, Geoff the Duck, please could you bring some of those South Yorkshire carols along, or does the Mudcat Republic of Yorkshire ban the export of these?

I've never had a problem parking round the curry mile Mrs D. provided it is early enough. There are plenty of well lit side streets and, if you are really lucky, some spaces on the main drag.

Not 100% sure about round the Ducie as I don't know it too well having not been since 1980-odd! It is behind the University and the road is pretty quite out of academic hours if I remember rightly. I have never heard of any problems though. Can anyone advise on that side?

Personaly I will get a taxi from Swinton so I don't care anyway;-)

We will have a space or two to spare for anyone who wants to stop over btw. There is also a travel lodge type affair 200 yards down the road from us. About 40 quid a room if anyone wants a bit more comfort. I think Bill S. stopped there during the last do.

Just refreshing this thread as a reminder, and maybe attract the attention of some who may have missed it earlier. Joan from Wigan, Ned Ludd, and HelenJ have added their names to the list, so I'll do another headcount nearer to the date.

HelenJ I've heard stories about you at the Sam Pirt workshop - luring young men into pubs!! Still what a wonderful birthday present from John.

I did post a tentative schedule above which will need to change now that the Open Door on Sunday has been replaced by a session at the White Lion. Spot did suggest an Open Mic session from 0800(!?) on the Saturday morning; I'm not clear what the response to that idea was. (I know what my response to an 8am start would be!!!)

They would open at 9am if required (Knock three times and say hello. Then say that you were sent by Joe...) but 11am sounds far more reasonable to me. 11am to, say 5pm gives us plenty of time for an open mic. concert and/or a singaround. Be in Rusholme by 6-ish and in the Ducie by 8pm?

Spot did say 0800 but I know him better than that;-) It's his birthday today btw.

All together now - woof woof woof woof, woof woof

Harryoldham
HelenJ with friend Yvonne
Joan from Wigan
JohnJ
John Routledge
Les/Manchester UK ?
Linda Kelly

MC Fat
Mrs Duck, and Geoff
Ned Ludd
Spot the Dog

If I've missed anyone out, or you've changed name, please post a new message. In the meantime Happy Birthday to anyone who has had a birthday this year!

What? Schedule of events

Friday 8 Dec: From 8/8:30pm Singaround at The White Lion, Swinton
Saturday 9 Dec: 11am - 5pm Open Mic/Singaround at The White Lion
Saturday 9 Dec: 6pm - 7:30pm Curry in Rusholme
Saturday 9 Dec: 8pm onwards Singing and music at The Ducie Arms
Sunday 10 Dec: From about 12 noon Survivors Singaround back at The White Lion

Where? How to find places

The White Lion DTG posted a link to a map earlier in this thread, but I'll give it again here Map . The address is 242, Manchester Road, Swinton, M27 4TS
Rusholme "Curry Mile" See here
"Curry Mile" .
The Ducie Arms, Devas Steet, off Lloyd Street North info about the pub here Pub Guide and a map here

Thats about all I can think of except:
(a)Do we want to go with MC Fat's suggestion, and book the Shan Dah? and, if so, for how many? It might be easier to take pot luck.
(b) What kind of beer does the White Lion serve?
(c) HelenJ, are those of us who want to make an early start at 8am on Saturday OK to turn up at your house for a singing breakfast?

No Draught Old Tom I'm afraid but the bottles are quite nice. Other bottles include the very acceptable German Bitburger (sp?) and the very odd Strongbow spiced cider! Lagers are Carling and Grolsh.

Just recieved e/m from Yvonne to say "Isn't Saturday the end of Ramadan?" In which case everyone must be on their toes dodging the high powered motors hired for the event by doting fathers for their sons to let off steam round the street of M/cr. Evidently the police are helpless to intervene. There was a rather nasty episode last year when a driver was stopped, slapped about a bit and lost an eye during the 'argument' with the powers that were at the time.

Just a thought.

Liz - you can kip here if you can put up with two cats sleeping on you and a dog licking your face (otherwise house trained)

Re the end of Ramadan (I think it's called Eid at that juncture) Yvonne thinks it starts around 22.00 on the Saturday so if an early start is made to eat, there shouldn't be much difficulty. After that it's just a case of dodging the dodgems.

We had our first official night at the upstairs room at the Lion last night (We have been in the downstairs one nearly 20 years!) It seem to work a treat and it is reet good for folkie events.

I will be at the Lion by 8:30pm on Friday - If anyone gets there earlier please feel free to either wait for me or Spot or make your way to the upstairs room.

See you all soon.

Dave

If anyone is going to drink the Fredericks (assuming it's "on". Could they please wear a badge (button) saying so. Then we can ignore what they say and help them to the loo now and then.

I will be at the Lion around 0830 PM latest and will have set the lighting and sound decks up beforehand (this will consist of throwing two switches and turning the fan on.

Looking forward to turning names into friends....
